Tummy Tuck FAQ: Clear Answers to the Questions Patients Ask Most
A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, removes loose skin and fat from the abdomen and can repair separated muscles. Before deciding, most people want to know the same things: will it help in my case, how painful is it, how long is recovery, what will the scar look like and will the result last? This guide answers these questions based on general medical knowledge. Your own situation is always assessed by a surgeon after an examination.

The main points in 30 seconds
- A tummy tuck reshapes the abdominal wall; it is not a weight-loss method.
- The classic technique treats more skin and moves the navel; the mini is for the lower abdomen.
- Surgery takes two to four hours under general anaesthesia, with one to three days in hospital.
- A binder is worn for six to eight weeks; office work often resumes after two to three weeks.
- The scar is hidden low on the abdomen and fades over about a year.

When a Tummy Tuck Is Needed
A tummy tuck is surgery for the shape of the abdominal wall, not a way to lose weight. It is chosen when loose, stretched skin and a weak or separated abdominal wall remain after pregnancy, a C-section or major weight loss. Stretched skin does not shrink back on its own, and muscles that have drifted apart, a condition called diastasis recti, rarely return to their place with exercise alone.
Typical reasons to consider the operation include:
- an overhanging fold of skin and fat, sometimes called an apron, above the pubic area;
- a bulging abdomen that stays even at a stable, healthy weight because the rectus muscles have separated;
- stretch marks and loose skin concentrated below the navel;
- an overhang above a C-section scar that makes clothing uncomfortable or causes skin irritation.
If the main issue is only fat under firm, elastic skin, liposuction may be enough, and a surgeon will explain which approach fits you.
Types of Tummy Tuck
Surgeons describe several types of abdominoplasty, which differ in the length of the incision and the area treated. City Medical Centre performs two of them, and the surgeon chooses between them after examining your skin and muscles.
Classic tummy tuck
- What it treats
- Marked loose skin above and below the navel, diastasis, C-section scar
- Key features
- Low horizontal incision, muscle repair, navel repositioned
Mini tummy tuck with diastasis repair
- What it treats
- Small excess of skin in the lower abdomen, diastasis, overhang above a C-section scar
- Key features
- Shorter incision, navel stays in place, shorter recovery
General medical literature also describes extended, vertical and circumferential variants used after very large weight loss. These are mentioned here for general information; the right option is discussed at the consultation, and the section at the end of this guide explains what the clinic offers.

Preparation and Contraindications
Good results start with good preparation. Before surgery you have a consultation, an examination and standard tests: blood tests, including clotting and infection screening, an ECG and a chest X-ray, and a GP review if needed. It is best to reach a stable weight you can keep, because large weight changes after surgery affect the result.
- About two weeks before surgery, medicines that affect blood clotting are usually stopped, but only as agreed with your doctor.
- Stopping smoking and alcohol in advance helps wounds heal and lowers the risk of complications.
- You stop eating about eight hours before the operation.
A tummy tuck is usually postponed or not advised during pregnancy or breastfeeding, if another pregnancy is planned in the near future, with uncontrolled diabetes or high blood pressure, serious heart or lung disease, clotting disorders, active infection or a body weight that is still changing a lot. Heavy smoking is a strong reason for caution.
The Operation
A tummy tuck is performed under general anaesthesia and usually takes two to four hours. The surgeon makes a horizontal incision low on the abdomen, planned so that underwear and swimwear hide the scar. The separated muscles are stitched together to restore a firm abdominal wall, excess skin and fat are removed, and the remaining skin is drawn down and closed.
In a classic tummy tuck the navel is brought out through a new opening in the tightened skin. Thin drains may be placed for a few days to remove fluid. A compression garment is put on in the operating room. In a mini tummy tuck the incision is shorter, work is limited to the lower abdomen and the navel is not moved.
Recovery and Restrictions
After surgery you stay in hospital under medical supervision for one to three days. The first days are the most uncomfortable: the abdomen feels tight, and you walk slightly bent forward to reduce tension on the wound. Short walks begin on the first day to support circulation.
- A compression binder is worn for about six to eight weeks.
- Most swelling settles within about a month; some remains for several months.
- Office work is usually possible after two to three weeks.
- Heavy lifting, intense exercise and abdominal workouts are avoided for about six to eight weeks.
- The final result is assessed at about three months, and the contour keeps refining for up to a year.
Warning signs such as increasing pain, fever, a swollen, painful calf or sudden breathlessness need urgent medical attention.

Scars and How to Minimise Them
A tummy tuck always leaves a scar. After a classic operation it runs low across the abdomen from hip to hip, and there is a small scar around the navel. After a mini tummy tuck the scar is shorter. In the first months it is pink and raised, then gradually becomes flatter and paler; it usually matures by about a year.
- Follow wound-care instructions and keep the area clean and dry.
- Wear the compression garment as advised to reduce tension on the scar.
- Avoid smoking, which slows healing.
- Protect the scar from sun for the first year.
- Ask your surgeon about silicone sheets or gels once the wound has closed.
A tendency to thick or raised scars runs in some families, so mention it at the consultation.
Your Questions Answered at City Medical Centre
City Medical Centre performs a classic tummy tuck and a mini tummy tuck with diastasis repair. Extended, vertical and circumferential variants are not offered and are described above for general information only; which technique suits you is decided by the surgeon after assessing your skin, fat layer and muscles. After surgery there are follow-up visits with your surgeon at about one week, three months and six months.
The clinic works with patients from abroad. The first consultation is free and can take place online: send photos of your abdomen from the front and the side, tell us about pregnancies, C-sections and weight changes, and ask every question on your list. The doctor assesses your case and names the price, which is then fixed in the contract. A personal coordinator supports you from the first message to the end of recovery, and questions can be sent via Telegram. Read more on our tummy tuck page.

Frequently asked questions
Does a tummy tuck hurt?
The operation itself is done under general anaesthesia, so you feel nothing during it. Afterwards the abdomen feels tight and sore, especially when muscles were repaired; this is strongest in the first few days and is controlled with pain relief chosen by your doctor. Most people feel much better within one to two weeks.
How long do results last?
Removed skin and fat do not come back, and repaired muscles keep the abdominal wall firmer, so results are long-lasting. Ageing, pregnancy and large weight changes can still loosen the skin over time. Keeping a stable weight and staying active helps preserve the shape for many years.
Can I have a tummy tuck without muscle repair?
Yes, if your abdominal muscles are not separated, the surgeon may only remove skin and fat. When diastasis is present, repairing it is usually recommended, because without it the abdomen can still bulge even after the excess skin is removed. The decision is made after examining your abdominal wall.
When can I sleep flat after a tummy tuck?
For the first one to two weeks you usually sleep with the upper body raised and the knees slightly bent to reduce tension on the wound. Most people return gradually to sleeping flat after about two weeks, and to sleeping on the stomach later, as advised by the surgeon.
Can weight gain ruin a tummy tuck?
Moderate weight changes are usually tolerated, but significant weight gain can stretch the skin again and put new fat under and around the tightened area. Pregnancy can also stretch the muscles. That is why surgery is best done at a stable weight, and pregnancy is usually planned a year or more later.
How visible is the scar?
The scar sits low on the abdomen and is planned so that underwear and swimwear cover it. It is most noticeable in the first months and usually becomes flatter and paler by about a year. How it looks depends on your skin, genetics and care of the scar during healing.
