How it really happens

Healing after a tummy tuck

The patient stays in hospital under medical supervision for 1–3 days right after surgery. Usually drains are removed after two days and stitches after 7 days. Wearing a compression binder for 1.5–2 months supports the abdominal wall and gives a smooth contour. Most swelling is gone within 30 days, with office work resuming after 2–3 weeks. For 2–3 months avoid sports, sauna and heavy lifting; at first, sleeping on your back with knees bent is recommended. By 12 months the scar is fully mature, faded and barely noticeable.

Post-op check-ups

After 7 days, at 3 months and at 6 months. Until the end of the year, get a post-surgery consultation with your surgeon to review results and get more information, at the clinic's expense

About abdominoplasty for patients from Uyo

Pregnancy, a C-section or major weight loss can leave behind loose skin and diastasis, the separation of the rectus abdominis muscles. Diet and training cannot fix this: stretched skin does not shrink, and separated muscles do not come back together on their own. That is when women in Uyo consider abdominoplasty, which restores both the skin and the muscle wall in one operation.

It all begins with a surgeon consultation: the doctor listens to your wishes, examines the abdomen and rules out contraindications, and a hormone screening is ordered to help predict the long-term result. Patients from Uyo then complete a check-up: blood tests including a coagulation panel, biochemistry and infections, ECG and chest X-ray, all available at the clinic with no waiting.

Combining procedures can make the plan more efficient: a tummy tuck with flank and waist liposuction or diastasis repair is done under one anaesthesia with one recovery period. The price for such a combination, as for a standalone operation, is set after a free consultation and fixed in the contract. People in Uyo can book that consultation through the form or any messenger.

Uyo and why a tummy tuck is planned here with care

Uyo is the capital of Akwa Ibom State in the South South of Nigeria. It has held that role since 23 September 1987, when Akwa Ibom was created from the former Cross River State. A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is a planned operation, and in a city like this the planning usually starts long before the first conversation with a surgeon: patients think about work, school runs, church and family calendars, and the weather.

The population figures show how large the city has grown. The 2006 Nigerian Census counted 427,873 people in Uyo (including Itu), and 554,906 in the greater urban area including Uruan. The population of Uyo is put at 1,393,000 as at 2024. In a city of this size, many women and men who live busy lives in offices, shops, schools and businesses ask the same practical question: how do I fit a real recovery into my life?

This text is written for people in Uyo who are considering abdominoplasty after pregnancies, after major weight loss, or because of loose abdominal skin and a weakened abdominal wall that diet and exercise no longer change. It does not replace a personal examination. It helps you prepare better questions, understand the stages of recovery and see how the centre's remote consultation works from your own home.

Climate in Uyo and what it means for recovery

Uyo has warm, cloudy wet seasons and hot, largely cloudy dry seasons. Temperatures range from 21 °C to 31 °C through the year, and humidity ranges from 67 to 88%. This is a warm and humid environment all year, and that shapes the way you live through the weeks after a tummy tuck.

The main practical point is the compression garment. It is a requirement: recovery is worse without it, because it supports the tissues and reduces swelling. For the first 3–4 weeks it stays on around the clock, then during the daytime for roughly a month more. In humid heat a garment can feel heavy, so plan in advance: ask the surgeon which fabrics and sizes are suitable, and have a clean spare to change into. Cotton layers under the garment and loose, soft clothing over it are general measures that many patients find comfortable. Your operating surgeon will name the exact period you must wear it.

Humidity also means you should keep dressings and the skin around them clean and dry, and follow the aftercare advice you receive. Do not experiment with creams, home remedies or oils on the wound area. If you notice redness, unusual discharge or rising discomfort, write to the coordinators, who are available around the clock on Telegram and Telegram, and they will connect you with your surgeon.

Because the sky is often cloudy, people sometimes underestimate the sun. Even so, healing scars should be protected from strong sunlight and from tanning beds, which are excluded for at least a month. Keep the abdomen covered outdoors and follow the surgeon's guidance on scar care once the wound has closed.

Choosing the season for the operation

Uyo does not have a cold winter, so the question is less about avoiding cold and more about comfort in heat and humidity. The wet seasons bring cloud and rain, while the dry seasons are hot and largely cloudy. Neither is automatically better. The right moment is the one when you can give yourself 2–3 weeks away from physical exertion, with no big commitments.

Think about the rainy periods first. Rain can make moving around the city slower, and you will want short, easy journeys to check-ups and tests. Remember that tests before surgery usually stay valid for 10–14 days, so schedule them close enough to the operation date, but not the day before. Plan the date with the coordinator so that the pre-surgery check-up, the surgery and the early check-up at 7 days fit together without stress.

In the hot dry periods the main concern is overheating under the compression garment and staying hydrated. Cooler rooms, light fabrics and a calm routine at home make recovery easier. Sauna, steam bath, pool, tanning beds, alcohol and smoking are out for at least a month, which also removes the temptation to cool down in a pool.

Choose a date with a margin. Do not book the operation in the days just before a wedding, a graduation, a family celebration or a major work deadline. The first changes appear 2 weeks after surgery, but the interim result comes at 1.5–2 months and the final contours at 6–12 months, so a photo-ready event soon after surgery is not realistic.

Work, study and daily life in the capital

Uyo is an administrative and educational centre. The main campus of the University of Uyo is in Nwaniba, with satellites on Ikpa Road, and the city has 244 primary schools, 7 secondary schools, 6 special education centres and 5 tertiary institutions. Many residents work in offices, schools, public service and commerce, which means desk work and teaching are common. These are good news for recovery planning, because the medical timeline says you can be back at work after 2–3 weeks.

That figure refers to office-type work. If your job involves lifting, standing for long hours, supervising children physically or moving between sites, speak openly with the surgeon. For the first 2–3 weeks you avoid physical exertion, heavy lifting and sudden movements. A teacher can often return to the classroom earlier than someone who carries goods in a market, and the surgeon can help you judge your own situation.

Students need to look at the academic calendar. A student who has lectures, practicals and exams should plan the operation in a quieter period and ask lecturers in advance about attendance. Sitting for long periods is possible, but you should be able to stand and walk when you need to.

If you run a shop or a small business, arrange cover before the operation: who opens, who handles stock, who carries deliveries. Parents of young children should arrange help with lifting, because heavy lifting and sudden movements are not allowed for the first 2–3 weeks, and a toddler counts as a heavy load. Plan with relatives in advance so that you do not need to improvise on the second day at home.

Food, family events and social life

Food is a big part of life in Akwa Ibom, and family gatherings, church events, weddings, funerals and festivals bring people together around large meals. After a tummy tuck, plan these occasions carefully. In the first weeks, a heavy meal can leave you uncomfortable under the compression garment, and you need to move gently rather than sit at a long table for hours.

Alcohol is out for at least a month, and it is also excluded in the 7–10 days before the operation, along with smoking and medicines that affect blood clotting. At celebrations it is easier if relatives know in advance that you are recovering. Have a drink you are happy to hold, and tell the host that you will leave early.

Ask the surgeon at the consultation about the diet that supports healing. This is general guidance, not a promise of any particular result. Many patients prefer lighter meals in the first days after surgery, and stay well hydrated, especially in a warm, humid climate. Plan who will prepare food at home during the first weeks so that you do not stand in the kitchen for a long time.

If a major family event falls within the first month, think about whether you can attend sitting down, in loose clothing, without dancing, lifting or long standing. Sudden movements and exertion are not suitable in the first 2–3 weeks. It is better to move the operation than to take risks to attend an event.

Sport, walking and returning to activity

Uyo has a strong sporting identity, with the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium among its landmarks, and many residents follow football or exercise for fitness. If you are active, you will want a clear answer about when training can restart. The rule after a tummy tuck is the same for everyone: for the first 2–3 weeks you avoid physical exertion, heavy lifting and sudden movements.

Sport is resumed gradually, with the surgeon's approval only. Do not decide on your own that you feel well enough. Feeling good does not mean the tissues are ready, and the compression garment is worn for another 4–8 weeks, which also affects how you move. Pool and sauna are excluded for at least a month. Gentle walking around the home is usually encouraged, and the surgeon will tell you how to increase it.

Think about the milestones. After 2–3 weeks you can do office work. By 1.5–2 months swelling and tightness pass. At 6–12 months, when the tissues are fully adapted, the final result and scar are assessed. Ask the surgeon at your check-ups at 7 days, 3 and 6 months what level of activity is suitable at each stage.

If you coach, play in a local team or run regularly, discuss a return plan in stages. Your core muscles have been worked on during the operation, and a rushed return may delay healing. Patience in the first months is far more useful than a quick comeback.

Who is a candidate and who is not

Many people in Uyo ask whether they are suitable. In general terms, you must be at least 18, with no contraindications. There is no upper age limit: each case is considered individually, after an examination and health assessment. A tummy tuck is not a weight loss method. The World Health Organization describes overweight and obesity as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health, and surgery does not replace medical care for that condition. Tell the surgeon your weight history openly.

Typical reasons to consider abdominoplasty are loose skin and a stretched abdominal wall after pregnancy or after significant weight loss. A mini tummy tuck may be considered for smaller changes, and for that option one day in hospital is usually enough. A classic tummy tuck means 1–3 days under medical supervision. The surgeon decides which is appropriate after examining you and reviewing your photos and tests.

Contraindications are decided by the doctor, and they include conditions found at the pre-surgery check-up. Do not hide medicines, previous operations, clotting problems, smoking or alcohol use. Honest information makes the operation safer.

Preparation is a must. Stop smoking, drinking alcohol and taking medicines that affect blood clotting 7–10 days before a tummy tuck. Do this under medical advice, and do not stop prescribed medicines without discussing it with a doctor.

Tests and preparation you can start at home in Uyo

The pre-surgery check-up covers blood tests, ECG, leg vein ultrasound and consultations with a GP and anaesthetist. The full list is identical for all: blood and urine tests, coagulation panel, biochemistry, infection tests, ECG, chest X-ray, ultrasound of the leg veins and a GP's report. The exact list comes from the surgeon at the consultation, and tests usually stay valid for 10–14 days.

This is useful because you can plan the tests in Uyo in a calm way. Get them done in advance, not the day before. Ask the coordinator for the exact list in writing, keep the results together in a folder and send clear copies for the surgeon to review.

Before the operation, arrange your home: a bed where you can rest comfortably, pillows for support, loose clothing, easy-to-reach items and a helper for the first days. Prepare food in advance and think about who will take children to school and collect them.

Also prepare mentally. A tummy tuck is a significant operation with general anaesthesia. Write down your questions and your expectations, and discuss them honestly. This is easier when you are not rushed.

Questions patients in Uyo ask the surgeon before a tummy tuck

Patients in a busy state capital like Uyo often arrive at the first online conversation with a long list of practical questions. It helps to write them down beforehand and to put the most important ones first. A good consultation is not only about the operation itself; it is also about how the weeks afterwards will fit into your home, your job and your family.

Useful questions include: which type of operation is suitable for me, a classic tummy tuck or a mini tummy tuck? How many days will I spend in hospital in my case? Which tests do I need, and how long will they stay valid? Which compression garment should I buy, and for exactly how long must I wear it? Who will check my wound, and when are the check-ups after 7 days, 3 and 6 months?

Ask also about the scar. The final result and scar are assessed at 6–12 months, once the tissues have fully adapted, so the scar will look different in the early weeks than at the end. Ask how to care for it, what to avoid in the humid climate of Uyo, and when you can start any scar care the surgeon recommends.

Finally, ask what to do if something worries you at home. The coordinators answer around the clock on Telegram and Telegram, so you know in advance who to write to at night or on a weekend, and you do not have to wait for a scheduled check-up with a small concern.

Setting up your home in Uyo for the first weeks

Recovery after abdominoplasty happens mostly at home, so the home setup matters. In a warm, humid city, choose the coolest and best ventilated room for resting. A bed that is easy to get in and out of, extra pillows for support and a clear path to the bathroom reduce the need for sudden movements, which are not allowed for the first 2–3 weeks.

Keep everything you need within reach: water, medicines prescribed by the surgeon, phone, charger, clean cotton clothing and the spare compression garment. Because the garment stays on around the clock for the first 3–4 weeks, a second one lets you wash one while wearing the other, and the surgeon will tell you how to do this correctly.

Think about household routines. Who will cook, wash clothes, carry water or shopping, and take children to school? In a city with many schools and working parents, these duties are shared among relatives and neighbours, so ask for help early and agree on specific days. Avoid heavy lifting entirely during the first weeks, including buckets, bags of groceries and small children.

Prepare for power interruptions and heat by keeping a fan or another cooling method ready, plus a charged phone to contact the coordinators. A calm, comfortable home makes the early days easier and leaves you free to focus on rest and gentle movement.

Hospital stay, anaesthesia and the first days

A tummy tuck is performed under general anaesthesia, with up to 3 days in hospital. After surgery the patient stays for 1–3 days in a comfortable hospital ward with meals, under medical supervision. For a mini tummy tuck, one day is usually enough. Patients from Uyo should plan family support for this period and for the return home.

Before the operation you meet the anaesthetist, and the pre-surgery check-up covers blood tests, ECG, leg vein ultrasound and consultations with a GP and anaesthetist. Tell them about every medicine, allergy and previous anaesthetic experience. Honest answers are the foundation of safe anaesthesia.

After you return home, recovery continues with a clear programme. Dressings and aftercare advice are included, and the surgeon follows your progress at the check-up after 7 days. By then the first stage of swelling is being assessed, and you can ask about movement, sleeping position, bathing and the garment.

Remember the simple timeline: after 2–3 weeks you can do office work, by 1.5–2 months swelling and tightness pass, and the final result is assessed at 6–12 months. Knowing this in advance helps you stay patient when the abdomen looks swollen in the early period.

How the remote consultation works from Uyo

The first consultation is free and online, so you can take part from your own home in Uyo without arranging time off. Coordinators are available 24/7 on Telegram and Telegram. You write, send photos if the surgeon asks for them, describe your history, and then speak with the specialist at a time that suits you. We respect your time: we work 24/7, with easy booking and a personal approach, and we adapt to your pace.

Prepare for the conversation. List your pregnancies, weight changes, previous operations, medicines, allergies, smoking and alcohol habits, and what bothers you about your abdomen. Make a note of your work and family schedule so that the date can be planned realistically.

After surgery you get a recovery programme. Check-ups at 7 days, 3 and 6 months help track your recovery, and the surgeon follows your recovery and the changing abdominal contour at those check-ups. Dressings and aftercare advice are already included. Until the end of the year, you can get a post-surgery consultation with your surgeon to review results and get more information, at the clinic's expense.

Your contact with the coordinators does not stop at the operation. If something worries you at home in the humid heat, such as swelling, garment discomfort or questions about movement, you can write at any hour and they will pass your question to the surgeon.

How soon can I go back to work after a tummy tuck if I work in an office in Uyo?

The medical timeline says you can be back at work after 2–3 weeks. This applies to office work. For the first 2–3 weeks you avoid physical exertion, heavy lifting and sudden movements. If your job is physical, discuss it with the surgeon before choosing the date.

Does the warm, humid climate of Uyo change recovery?

Uyo has temperatures from 21 °C to 31 °C and humidity from 67 to 88%. The compression garment is required and stays on around the clock for the first 3–4 weeks, then in the daytime for roughly a month more. Keep the skin clean and dry, wear loose clothing and follow the surgeon's aftercare advice.

How long will I stay in hospital?

A classic tummy tuck means general anaesthesia and up to 3 days in hospital, usually 1–3 days in a comfortable ward with meals, under medical supervision. For a mini tummy tuck, one day is usually enough. Recovery continues at home, and the surgeon monitors it at scheduled check-ups.

When will I see the result?

The first changes appear 2 weeks after surgery as the main swelling subsides. The interim result comes at 1.5–2 months, and the final contours at 6–12 months, when the tissues are fully adapted and the final result and scar are assessed.

When can I exercise or swim?

Avoid physical exertion for the first 2–3 weeks. Sauna, steam bath, pool, tanning beds, alcohol and smoking are out for at least a month. Sport is resumed gradually, with the surgeon's approval only, and compression garments are worn for another 4–8 weeks.

What tests do I need, and can I do them in Uyo?

The list is identical for all: blood and urine tests, coagulation panel, biochemistry, infection tests, ECG, chest X-ray, ultrasound of the leg veins and a GP's report. The surgeon gives the exact list at the consultation. Tests usually stay valid for 10–14 days, so plan them in advance but not too early.

Do I need to prepare before the operation?

Yes. Stop smoking, drinking alcohol and taking medicines that affect blood clotting 7–10 days before the operation, under medical advice. The pre-surgery check-up includes consultations with a GP and an anaesthetist.

Who can have a tummy tuck?

You must be at least 18, with no contraindications. There is no upper age limit, and each case is considered individually after an examination and health assessment.

What follow-up is there after the operation?

You get a recovery programme with check-ups at 7 days, 3 months and 6 months. Check-ups, dressings and aftercare advice are already included. Until the end of the year, you can also have a post-surgery consultation with your surgeon to review results.

How do I start from Uyo?

Write to the coordinators on Telegram or Telegram at any time, since they work 24/7. The first online consultation is free, and you can take it from home, with photos and your questions prepared.

Can a relative join the online consultation from Uyo?

Yes. Many patients ask a spouse, a sister or a close friend to listen in. It helps with remembering the surgeon's instructions about preparation, the compression garment and the rules for the first 2–3 weeks. Coordinators are available 24/7 on Telegram and Telegram to arrange it.

What should I prepare at home in Uyo before the operation?

Prepare a comfortable, cool resting place, a spare compression garment, loose cotton clothing and food for the first days. Arrange help with children, cooking and lifting, since heavy lifting and sudden movements are not allowed for the first 2–3 weeks.

How long do I wear the compression garment in a hot climate?

The first 3–4 weeks it stays on around the clock, then during the daytime for roughly a month more. Recovery is worse without it because it supports the tissues and reduces swelling. Your operating surgeon will name the exact period.
