FAQ
Rhinoplasty (nose job) — one of the most delicate and sought-after plastic surgeries, aimed at reshaping the nose in line with the individual proportions of the nose and the whole face. Modern rhinoplasty is not just an operation to change how the nose looks, but complex surgical work aimed at an aesthetic ideal without compromising health.

The optimal age range is 18 to 45. The nose is fully formed by then and tissues still heal well. At an older age, surgery is possible with medical indications if your general health allows it
At its core, rhinoplasty is a comprehensive solution. It corrects both congenital and acquired nasal deformities, for example after a nasal injury. Patients are often bothered by a dorsal hump or an overly wide nose. Nose correction can also target the tip (tip rhinoplasty) or the nostrils (alar rhinoplasty). The surgical plan is created individually for each patient, taking every feature of their nose into account.
Rhinoplasty is performed under general anaesthesia and, depending on complexity, takes 1.5 to 3 hours.
The surgeon determines the extent and course of the surgery at the consultation, based on your goals and the anatomy of your nose.
Rhinoplasty — surgery to change the appearance of the nose (an aesthetic goal) and improve its function if breathing is impaired.
Septoplasty — a surgical fix for the nasal septum that restores normal breathing without changing how the nose looks outside.
Often both surgeries are combined, especially when a patient has a deviated septum and aesthetic concerns. This gives a harmonious look and restores full breathing. At City Medical Centre we perform rhinoseptoplasty — a combined surgery that solves both tasks at once
For a successful operation, preparation should begin 21 days before rhinoplasty. At the first appointment our plastic surgeon will give you a list of the required tests.
| Complete blood count (including ESR, white cell differential, platelets) | 2 weeks |
| Urinalysis | 2 weeks |
| Infection tests: HIV, HBsAg, anti-HCV, antibodies to Treponema pallidum | 2 weeks |
| Blood group and Rh factor | 2 weeks |
| Blood biochemistry (total protein; urea; uric acid; creatinine; glucose; total, unconjugated and conjugated bilirubin; ALT; AST; K; Na; Cl; cholesterol) | 2 weeks |
| Coagulation panel (Quick prothrombin, INR, APTT, D-dimer, antithrombin III) | 2 weeks |
| Electrocardiogram (ECG) tracing with a report | 2 weeks |

| Chest X-ray or fluorography with a report | 6 months |
| MSCT of the paranasal sinuses | 6 months |
| After the full laboratory work-up — a physician's report confirming there are no contraindications to surgery | 2 weeks |
You prepare with plastic surgeon consultations, lab tests (CBC, biochemistry, coagulation, infection tests), an ECG, a chest X-ray and an X-ray or CT of the nose. Stop anticoagulants, alcohol and smoking a week before surgery. Eat lightly the day before and fast 6 hours before surgery
Although nose surgery is one of the most popular and well-established aesthetic operations, like any surgery it carries certain risks. To minimise the likelihood of complications after rhinoplasty, our clinic provides thorough pre-operative preparation and post-operative monitoring.
Important: if after rhinoplasty you have difficulty breathing, severe pain, a high temperature or a change in the shape of your nose, contact your doctor immediately.
Rhinoplasty at City Medical Centre is performed with modern technology, safe materials and constant medical supervision, which keeps the risk of complications to a minimum.
We also provide post-operative monitoring and prescribe recovery therapy.
Recovery after nose surgery is just as important as the operation itself. Proper recovery determines how aesthetic and harmonious the final result will be. At City Medical Centre recovery is closely monitored and divided into three phases: early, intermediate and late
When swelling goes down (2–3 weeks), first improvements are visible; the final rhinoplasty result can be evaluated in 1–1.5 years, after full tissue stabilisation
The nose needs to be protected after surgery. An aluminium cast is placed over the nose, with special silicone splints inside the nasal cavity. Nasal function is limited in the first days but recovers quickly. The final result of rhinoplasty can be assessed after 1–1.5 years, once the swelling has fully subsided.
Important: if nasal function is impaired after the first operation or you are not satisfied with the result, revision (secondary) rhinoplasty may be needed. It is a more complex procedure, performed no earlier than one year after the primary operation.
During the first days after surgery, splints or swelling may partly block the nasal passages. Breathing is usually fully restored within 1–2 weeks, depending on the extent of surgery and your body
Our doctors use microsurgical techniques and quality sutures to keep scars minimal
Rhinoplasty creates more harmonious facial features and better aesthetics without erasing individuality. Via 3D modelling you can view the predicted outcome in advance and agree on the changes with your surgeon
Rhinoplasty is a serious step. A well-performed rhinoplasty means the new nose is in perfect harmony with your facial features and works flawlessly. At the consultation the nasal surgeon assesses every parameter in detail: the size of the nose, tip projection, and the condition of the septum and nasal mucosa. We use 3D modelling so you can see the future proportions of your nose before the surgery is performed.
Don't just browse rhinoplasty photos online. Book a consultation to discuss what modern rhinoplasty can and cannot do for you. Correcting external nasal deformities and reshaping the nose is our speciality.

Who is a candidate? The optimal age is 18 to 45, when the nose is fully formed and tissues heal well; with medical indications, older patients can also be considered if health allows. Indications include asymmetric cartilage or nostrils and significant breathing problems. Anyone researching rhinoplasty in Dar es Salaam should know the contraindications too: decompensated chronic disease, skin damage or inflammation in the area.
Safety depends on each step. Full diagnostics include tests, CT, ECG and exams by the surgeon and anaesthetist. After surgery, do not remove dressings or splints yourself, press on your nose, wear glasses or sleep face down. Regular follow-up visits catch small deviations early. People from Dar es Salaam are advised to contact the doctor right away in case of severe pain, fever or breathing difficulty.
Rhinoplasty is priced at $4,200 (≈ TZS 11,500,000) whatever the technique. That sum brings together surgery under general anaesthesia, one day of inpatient care, doctor monitoring and post-op visits with dressings. The plastic surgeon confirms the exact cost during a free first consultation, after examining your nose. To arrange yours, patients from Dar es Salaam send a request or write to a coordinator in a messenger.

For a long time I was self-conscious about the length of my nose, until a friend who had had rhinoplasty recommended this clinic. At the very first consultation they set the date of surgery and explained every stage in detail. The rhinoplasty under general anaesthesia was performed by Mareta Meirieva: the swelling went down quickly, and after just a week my nose looked natural and neat. Modern equipment, attentive staff and appointments without delays made the whole process comfortable. I recommend the clinic to anyone who values professionalism and a quality result.

This was my first visit to the clinic, for rhinoseptoplasty, and to be honest I was very nervous. At the consultation they explained every stage of the operation and recovery in detail, which calmed me down straight away. The operation was performed by Mareta Meirieva: the swelling started to go down on the third day, and the result is visible to the naked eye. Everything inside is sterile and pleasant, the atmosphere inspires trust, and the staff are always responsive. I thank the clinic for the high level of service and the warm approach!

Everything was first-class: clean, cosy and calm. Booking and choosing the right date was easy. The nose operation went smoothly and the nerve block was done perfectly: now I breathe freely without nasal drops! It is a real lifesaver for anyone tired of endless prescriptions and ineffective procedures. I recommend it to everyone who values professionalism and results.

Viktoria Petrova
I recently had rhinoplasty and I am absolutely delighted. At the consultation they told me about every stage in detail, so I went into surgery fully prepared. The operation went smoothly: they straightened the bridge of my nose and made the nostrils symmetrical, and the shape came out very neat. The swelling lasted a little longer than I expected, but they explained straight away that full recovery takes more time. No unpleasant surprises, everything was within the normal range. I recommend the clinic to anyone looking for a confident result and an attentive attitude.

Dar es Salaam is the largest city and financial hub of Tanzania, set on a natural harbour on the Swahili coast of the Indian Ocean. The city is described as having a population of over 7 million people, which makes it the largest city in East Africa by population. In a city of this size, people meet constantly: at work, in markets, at university, at family gatherings and in the media. Many residents who think about rhinoplasty have been weighing the idea for years before they ask a first question.
Dar es Salaam is also Tanzania's most prominent city for arts, fashion, media, film, television and finance. People who work in front of a camera, in client-facing roles or in the creative industries often look at facial harmony more closely than others. Some come with a breathing problem, some with a shape they have disliked since adolescence, and some after an injury. All three situations are legitimate reasons to ask for a consultation.
City Medical Centre works with patients from Dar es Salaam through a free online consultation. Coordinators are available 24/7 on WhatsApp and Telegram, so you can write after a working day in the Central Business District or late in the evening when the house is quiet. You do not need to rearrange your week to take the first step.
The first contact is simple. You write to a coordinator on WhatsApp or Telegram, send photographs of your nose from several angles and describe what bothers you: the shape of the bridge, the tip, the width, or breathing. A coordinator will call you back 24/7, so the time zone and your work schedule are not obstacles.
At the consultation, the doctor will build a 3D model of the expected result and explain it. This stage is called examination by the surgeon and 3D modelling, and it ends with your surgery plan. With 3D modelling the predicted result is visible in advance, and you agree on changes with your surgeon. For a person who lives in a busy city and compares many opinions, seeing the planned shape on screen helps to decide calmly.
Our approach is personal and adapts to your pace. Your time matters to us: we are reachable 24/7 and booking is straightforward. You can take a few days, discuss the plan with your husband or wife, parents or a close friend, and come back with new questions. Nobody rushes you.
Dar es Salaam has a tropical savanna climate, hot and humid through much of the year because of its closeness to the equator and the warm Indian Ocean. Annual rainfall is approximately 1,150 millimetres, with the long rains in April and May and the short rains in November and December. For someone recovering after nose surgery, heat and humidity matter in practical ways.
Heat can increase the feeling of swelling and discomfort, so the first weeks are easier in a cool, ventilated room. The nose needs to be protected after surgery: an aluminium cast is placed over the nose, with special silicone splints inside the nasal cavity. Sweat, direct sun and humid air make a cast uncomfortable, so plan to stay mostly indoors in the early days and keep the cast dry and untouched, following your surgeon's instructions.
Direct tropical sun is a real consideration once the cast is off. Healing skin and tissue should be shielded from strong sun, so ask your surgeon how to protect the nose outdoors, which sun protection to use and when, and how long to avoid sunglasses that rest on the bridge. This is general advice; your surgeon gives the exact rules for your case.
The rainy months bring heavy traffic and damp air. During the long rains in April and May and the short rains in November and December, getting around the city is slower, which is another reason to plan check-ups and rest carefully rather than leave them to chance.
There is no single correct month in a city where it is warm all year. The choice depends on your work calendar, family events and your tolerance of heat. Some patients prefer a period outside the rainy seasons, when the streets are easier to move through. Others choose a quieter time at work and accept the rain.
What does not change is the medical timeline. Surgery takes 1.5 to 3 hours under general anaesthesia, depending on complexity, and you stay one day in the clinic. Days 1–3: breathing is through the mouth, with splints in the nostrils. Day 7: the splints are removed. The cast is worn for up to 14 days, and stitches are removed on day 14 together with the cast. Plan your calendar around these dates.
Preparation should begin 21 days before rhinoplasty. At the first appointment our plastic surgeon will give you a list of the required tests. Count backwards from the date you want and make sure there are no weddings, major presentations or exams in the first two weeks that you cannot step away from.
Getting ready involves consultations with the plastic surgeon, lab work (CBC, biochemistry, coagulation, infection tests), ECG, chest X-ray, plus a nasal X-ray or CT. Ask the coordinator to explain each item in plain language, so that you can arrange the tests in Dar es Salaam without confusion and send the results for review.
A week ahead, give up anticoagulants, alcohol and smoking. The day before, eat light food; no food 6 hours before surgery. On the day of surgery, your last food and any fluids must be taken at least 6 hours before the scheduled time of the operation. In a city where meals are social and often large, tell your family in advance so that the evening before is calm and light.
For your hospital stay, buy compression stockings (class 2 compression) in advance and bring them with you. Do not leave this for the last day. Check the size and keep them ready with your documents and test results.
Psychological readiness also belongs to preparation. The patient should understand that the final result will be visible in 1–1.5 years. A person who expects a perfect nose on the day the cast is removed will be disappointed; a person who understands the timeline will enjoy each stage of improvement.
For 24 hours following rhinoplasty, the patient remains under observation in the inpatient unit. After that you begin the recovery programme with check-ups at 7 days, 3 and 6 months to track progress. Consultations with your surgeon stay free for a year after surgery, and follow-up support lasts 12 months. Because these check-ups can be done online, your recovery fits into life in Dar es Salaam.
In the days right after surgery, splints or swelling may partly block the nasal passages. You usually breathe fully again within 1–2 weeks, depending on your body and how extensive the surgery was. For 1–1.5 months after nose surgery you may feel slight congestion. This is expected and does not mean something went wrong, but report anything that worries you to the coordinator.
First improvements show once swelling subsides (2–3 weeks), but the final rhinoplasty result can be judged in 1–1.5 years, when tissues fully stabilise. In the first 7, 14 and 30 days the nose changes visibly, and photographs taken on the same dates help you and the surgeon compare progress.
Moving around the city needs thought. Dala dala minibuses and bodaboda motorcycles are the most common ways to get around, and crowded vehicles, jostling and dust are not what a healing nose needs. In the first weeks arrange a quiet ride with a relative or a car, and avoid crowds where someone could knock your face.
Office workers in the Central Business District, traders, students and people in media have different needs. Many people choose to stay at home while the cast is on, up to 14 days, and return when the cast and stitches are removed on day 14 and they feel comfortable. Ask your surgeon for a personal date; it depends on your job and on how the healing goes.
Sport needs patience. Avoid contact sport, heavy lifting and anything that risks a blow to the nose until your surgeon permits it. If you like swimming at the beaches of the Msasani peninsula or Kigamboni, do not go into the sea or a pool until the surgeon agrees. Ask separately about sunglasses, goggles and sun hats.
Family events, weddings and religious gatherings are central to life in the city, and a large share of residents are Muslim. Plan the operation so that important celebrations do not fall in the first weeks, when swelling is most visible. Many patients simply tell close relatives the truth and ask for quiet time; others say they are resting after a procedure. It is your decision.
Food culture matters too. Hot, spicy dishes and hot drinks can make a swollen face feel worse in the early days, and chewing hard food may be uncomfortable. Ask the surgeon which foods to avoid and for how long, and prepare simple meals in advance.
18 to 45 is the optimal age. By this age the nose has formed completely, while tissues still heal well. With medical indications, older patients can have surgery if their general health allows. Young teenagers should wait until the nose has finished growing.
Rhinoplasty improves aesthetics and makes facial features more harmonious, without loss of individuality. It is not a way to copy a celebrity's nose. The shape should suit your face, your skin and your breathing, and the 3D model helps to check this.
Contraindications are decided by the surgeon after tests. In general, serious chronic illnesses, clotting problems, active infections or unstable health call for postponement or a different plan. Smoking and alcohol also affect healing, which is why they are stopped a week ahead. Be honest about your medical history and any medicines you take, including herbal remedies and supplements.
The WHO treats excess weight as a health issue in its own right, and general health, including weight, can influence how safely a person undergoes any operation under general anaesthesia. Discuss your overall condition with the surgeon without embarrassment.
Before it had its present name, the settlement was Mzizima, a Swahili word meaning 'healthy town', a coastal fishing village on the edge of Indian Ocean trade. In 1865 or 1866 Sultan Majid bin Said of Zanzibar began building a new city close by and called it Dar es Salaam, usually translated as 'abode of peace'. Two names, one about health and one about calm, are a fitting frame for a conversation about a planned operation. A calm decision made without pressure is the best start for rhinoplasty.
The city's history is one of waves of growth. It declined after Majid's death in 1870 and was revived in 1887, when the German East Africa Company set up a station. Later it became the administrative and commercial centre of German East Africa, then of British Tanganyika, and after independence in December 1961 the capital of the country. Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged to form Tanzania in 1964. Growth after the Second World War was rapid, and the population rose from about 20,000 in 1900 to 93,000 in 1957 and 273,000 in 1967. People here are used to change and to building something new, and many treat a considered change of the nose in the same spirit: a plan, a timeline, patience.
In 2012 the city had a population of 4,364,541, about ten percent of the country, and a literacy rate of 96 percent. A highly literate city asks detailed questions. Patients from Dar es Salaam often arrive at the online consultation with printed notes, saved photographs and a list of terms they have read. That is welcome. Bring the list, and ask the surgeon to explain each item on the 3D model.
The Dar es Salaam Region has five districts: Kinondoni in the north, Ilala in the centre, Ubungo and Temeke in the south, and Kigamboni in the east across the Kurasini estuary. Your district shapes your recovery plan more than you might expect. A person in Masaki, Oyster Bay or Mikocheni lives near the central beach and in a quieter residential setting. A person in Sinza, Mwenge or Magomeni lives in a busier, more mixed area west of the Central Business District.
Ilala holds almost all government offices, ministries and the Central Business District, with Kivukoni, Kisutu, Upanga and Kariakoo. If you work in a ministry, a bank near the Bank of Tanzania or an office in Kisutu, talk to your employer about the first two weeks, when the aluminium cast is worn for up to 14 days. A short absence arranged in advance is easier than explaining a bandaged nose in a meeting.
Temeke is the main industrial district and the home of the Port of Dar es Salaam in Kurasini. Port officials, factory staff and police officers often work in dusty or physically demanding settings. If your job involves dust, fumes, heavy loads or a helmet, ask the surgeon when it is safe to return and what protection is acceptable. Do not return to a hard-hat job until the surgeon agrees, because a knock to the healing nose is the main risk.
Kigamboni, also called South Beach, is on a peninsula reached mainly by the MV Kigamboni ferry, with the Kigamboni Bridge as an alternative. For a resident there, the day of the check-up or the post-operative return home involves queues and crowds at the ferry in the first days. Arrange a bridge route by car, or schedule your return home for a quiet hour, and keep the nose away from jostling.
Kariakoo is the shopping district of the city, where bazaars and merchants sell everything from foodstuffs to hardware, and its market is the major supply point for the food eaten by Dar es Salaam residents. It is also one of the most crowded places in the country. In the first two weeks, while the splints and cast are on, it is not a place to visit. Ask a relative to shop for you and stock your kitchen before the operation.
The Magogoni fish market in Kivukoni is a morning institution. Strong smells, steam, heat and press of people are not a good combination with a nose that breathes poorly in the first days. Days 1–3 are mouth breathing with splints in the nostrils, and you may feel slight congestion for 1–1.5 months. Wait until breathing has improved before returning to such places.
Malls such as Mlimani City, City Mall in Kisutu, GSM Msasani Mall and Quality Center Mall are air-conditioned and calmer alternatives for short outings once the surgeon allows. Cool air is more comfortable than the street, and a mall is a good place for a gentle walk when you feel better. Choose quiet hours and keep away from crowds.
Traders and shop owners have a particular worry: the customers. If you run a stall or a shop, arrange a relative or an employee to cover for at least the period of the cast, up to 14 days. Many business owners in the city come from families with long trading traditions from the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent, and family cover is a normal part of how those businesses work. Use it.
The city has many institutions: the University of Dar es Salaam, the Dar es Salaam University College of Education in Chang'ombe, and the National Institute of Transport in Ubungo, along with many schools. Students often choose the operation between terms, so that the first two weeks do not clash with lectures, practicals or examinations. Ask the coordinator to help you count backwards from the exam date, remembering that preparation should begin 21 days before rhinoplasty.
Students who are under 18 should wait: 18 to 45 is the optimal age, because by this age the nose has formed completely while tissues still heal well. Parents often take part in these decisions, and the online consultation can include them. Let them see the 3D model and hear the surgeon explain what can and cannot be changed.
For teachers and lecturers, the voice and the face are the working tools. Swelling and congestion for 1–1.5 months can change how you sound for a while. Plan lessons so that you can rest your voice in the early period, and ask the surgeon what to expect for speaking.
Staff of the banks, the Stock Exchange and the media houses of the city meet people all day. For a presenter or someone appearing on television, schedule the operation after the major broadcast or event, and understand that the final result will be visible in 1–1.5 years. A first improvement shows when the swelling subsides in 2–3 weeks, but camera work should wait for the surgeon's approval.
Dar es Salaam has sandy beaches on the Msasani peninsula, at Oyster Bay Beach (Coco Beach), at Mbezi Beach, where there is a kite-surfing area, and in Kigamboni. Bongoyo Island is reached by boat from the Msasani Slipway. All of these are tempting, but sea, sand and strong sun are not for the first weeks. Do not swim in the sea or pool until the surgeon allows, and ask when you may wear sunglasses and a hat again.
The National Stadium holds up to 60,000 people and hosts the football clubs Young Africans and Simba. Match days are loud, packed and full of waving arms. If you are a regular fan, plan to miss at least the early matches and watch from home. A single blow to the nose from a crowd or a ball can undo careful surgical work.
Gymkhana in the Kivukoni area offers golf, tennis, squash and a fitness club, and the city has Lugalo Military Golf Course. Golf and gentle walking are among the first activities most people ask about, but squash, tennis and any ball sport must wait until the surgeon gives permission. Ask for a personal timeline rather than a general rule.
Mama Africa, founded in 2003, trains acrobats, and boxing is popular in Tanzania. For those who practise acrobatics, boxing, football or any contact sport, tell the surgeon at the very first consultation. Such patients need the longest break, and they benefit from a 3D plan that takes into account the risk of future impacts to the nose.
Prepare a short list before the online consultation. Ask what exactly can and cannot be changed in your nose, and have the surgeon show it on the 3D model. Ask how the operation affects breathing, how the splints and the aluminium cast will feel, and what to do if something seems wrong at night.
Ask about the plan for your climate: how to deal with heat, humidity and sun in the first weeks, when you can go outdoors, and how to protect the nose from sun later. Ask when you can use glasses, when you can swim, and when you can go back to exercise.
Ask about follow-up: check-ups at 7 days, 3 and 6 months, free consultations with your surgeon for a year after surgery, and what happens if you have questions between check-ups. Ask how photographs should be taken for comparison.
Finally, ask what the surgeon would not do. A good specialist is ready to say that a requested change does not suit your face. This honesty is a sign of professionalism and protects you from regret.
Yes. The consultation is online and free. You contact a coordinator on WhatsApp or Telegram, who are available 24/7, and send photographs. At the consultation, the doctor will build a 3D model of the expected result and explain it.
Rhinoplasty is performed under general anaesthesia and, depending on complexity, takes 1.5 to 3 hours. Rhinoplasty is done in 1 day, and you stay one day in the clinic, with 24 hours of observation in the inpatient unit.
Preparation should begin 21 days before rhinoplasty. At the first appointment our plastic surgeon will give you a list of the required tests: lab work (CBC, biochemistry, coagulation, infection tests), ECG, chest X-ray, plus a nasal X-ray or CT.
A week ahead, give up anticoagulants, alcohol and smoking. The day before, eat light food, and take no food 6 hours before surgery. Your last food and any fluids must be taken at least 6 hours before the scheduled time of the operation.
Heat and humidity can make the cast and swelling more uncomfortable, so rest in a cool, ventilated room in the first days. Protect the healing nose from strong sun and ask your surgeon for personal advice. This is general guidance only.
Day 7: the splints are removed. The aluminium nasal cast is worn for up to 14 days; stitches are removed on day 14 together with the cast.
You usually breathe fully again within 1–2 weeks, depending on your body and how extensive the surgery was. For 1–1.5 months after nose surgery you may feel slight congestion.
First improvements show once swelling subsides (2–3 weeks), but the final rhinoplasty result can be judged in 1–1.5 years, when tissues fully stabilise.
You follow a recovery programme with check-ups at 7 days, 3 and 6 months. Consultations with your surgeon stay free for a year after surgery, and follow-up support lasts 12 months.
18 to 45 is the optimal age. By this age the nose has formed completely, while tissues still heal well. With medical indications, older patients can have surgery if their general health allows.
Think about the ferry and the Kigamboni Bridge before the operation. Choose a calm hour for going home and avoid crowds. In days 1–3 breathing is through the mouth with splints in the nostrils, so keep the route simple and ask a relative to accompany you.
Avoid crowded markets while the splints and cast are on. The splints are removed on day 7 and the cast is worn for up to 14 days. Ask a relative to shop for you and ask your surgeon when it is safe to return.
Do not swim in the sea or a pool until your surgeon agrees. Strong sun and crowds are not good for a healing nose. Ask your surgeon when you can return to the beach and what sun protection to use.
Choose a break between terms, so that the first two weeks do not clash with lectures or exams. Preparation should begin 21 days before rhinoplasty, and 18 to 45 is the optimal age. The cast is worn for up to 14 days.
