What is liposuction
and who is it for?

Liposuction means surgical removal of excess subcutaneous fat from specific problem areas. It is not for losing weight and cannot stand in for diet and exercise. It is about targeted body contouring: saddlebags on the thighs, a sagging abdomen, fat deposits on the back, flanks, arms or chin.

If certain areas hold fat while your weight is normal and your lifestyle active, liposuction is for you. Fat cells removed from treated areas do not come back, which means that with a stable lifestyle the result lasts a long time.

Liposuction techniques at City Medical Centre

Tumescent (classic) liposuction

Step one is injecting a special solution — saline with lidocaine, adrenaline and several other agents — into the treatment area. It loosens the fat and tightens the vessels, keeping blood loss minimal and removal gentle. Then the fat emulsion is removed through a thin cannula using vacuum.

After surgery there is almost no swelling or bruising, and recovery is much easier than after a conventional procedure.

VASER liposuction (ultrasound)

With this method, ultrasound breaks down fat cells prior to vacuum removal. It is ideal for body contouring and for defining pronounced muscle relief — athletic abs.

It also suits delicate areas.

How the surgery goes: from consultation to result

Surgeon consultation

The doctor takes note of your wishes, examines you, evaluates the fat deposits and excludes contraindications. At City Medical Centre we also order hormonal screening to help predict the long-term result.

Pre-operative tests

Blood tests (full blood count, coagulation panel, biochemistry, infections — HIV, hepatitis, syphilis), ECG, chest X-ray and a GP consultation if needed.

All tests can be done at the clinic with no waiting.

Preparation

2 weeks before surgery, drop medicines that affect clotting. One week before, stop drinking and smoking for faster healing. Last meal — 8 hours before.

Surgery day

Meeting the surgeon, area marking and compression garment fitting. The type of anesthesia, local or general, depends on the scope.
Surgery time: 1 hour for small areas, up to 3–4 hours for a combined procedure.

Waking up and monitoring

If anesthesia is general, you stay in hospital for one day under observation. If it is local, you are discharged 3–4 hours after surgery.

Recovery

Compression garments are needed for 30–45 days. In 3–4 weeks the swelling subsides and first results appear; the final result is assessed at 3 months with the skin fully tightened.

Recovery after liposuction

After tumescent liposuction you recover much faster than after a conventional procedure — most patients are back at work in 3–7 days. A little swelling and a raised temperature in the first week are a normal response to surgery. Compression garments stay on for 30–45 days, fixing the new contours and speeding up tissue recovery. In the first month, avoid the bathhouse, sauna, pool and intense sport. To get the best result and recover faster, we recommend lymphatic drainage massage, pressotherapy and a gradual return to activity. Visible changes appear in 3–4 weeks and the final result at 3 months.

Liposuction: frequently asked questions

What Birmingham residents ask about liposuction

The operation is performed for adults aged 18 and over with no contraindications, and there is no upper age limit: the decision is made individually after an examination. Contraindications include endocrine obesity, decompensated diabetes, blood clotting disorders, cancer, pregnancy and breastfeeding. Anyone from Birmingham with a chronic condition should discuss it with a clinic doctor first.

Preparation follows a simple schedule. Two weeks before surgery, medications that affect blood clotting are stopped; a week before, alcohol and smoking are cut out for faster healing; the last meal is eight hours before the operation. On the day itself, the surgeon meets you, marks the areas and fits compression garments. This is the routine for everyone in Birmingham.

How much is liposuction in Birmingham? Prices start at $1,200, depending on the zone and the scope of surgery. Treating several areas in one operation often saves both recovery time and budget. The exact cost is confirmed once the surgeon has examined you, and it is then fixed in the contract. Start with a free consultation by sending a request or messaging us.
