What is liposuction
and who is it for?

Liposuction is an operation to remove excess subcutaneous fat from problem zones, not a way to slim down or to skip diet and exercise. It is aimed at targeted contouring — removing saddlebags on the thighs, a sagging tummy and fat deposits on the back, flanks, arms or chin.

Liposuction suits people whose specific areas hold on to fat despite a normal weight and an active lifestyle. The key point: fat cells removed from treated areas do not grow back, so with a steady lifestyle the result lasts for a long time.

Areas we treat

Several areas can be treated in one operation — this saves recovery time and budget

Liposuction techniques at City Medical Centre

Tumescent (classic) liposuction

The treatment area is first injected with a special solution of saline, lidocaine, adrenaline and several other agents. This loosens the fat and narrows the vessels, so blood loss is minimal and removal is gentle. Next, the fat emulsion is vacuumed out through a thin cannula.

Swelling and bruising after surgery are almost absent, and recovering is much easier than with a conventional procedure.

VASER liposuction (ultrasound)

Here fat cells are broken down with ultrasound before vacuum removal — an ideal method for defining pronounced muscle relief (athletic abs) and body contouring.

It also suits delicate areas.

How the surgery goes: from consultation to result

Surgeon consultation

Your wishes are heard, then the doctor examines you, assesses fat deposits and rules out contraindications. At City Medical Centre a hormonal screening is ordered too, helping to predict the long-term result.

Pre-operative tests

ECG, chest X-ray, blood tests (complete count, coagulation panel, biochemistry, HIV, hepatitis and syphilis) and, where needed, a GP consultation.

All tests can be done at the clinic with no waiting.

Preparation

Stop any medications affecting blood clotting 2 weeks before; stop alcohol and smoking a week before for quicker healing; eat for the last time 8 hours before.

Surgery day

Meeting the surgeon, area marking and compression garment fitting. The type of anesthesia, local or general, depends on the scope.
Duration: from 1 hour (small areas) to 3–4 hours (combined procedure).

Waking up and monitoring

With local anesthesia you are discharged 3–4 hours after surgery; with general anesthesia you stay one day in hospital under observation.

Recovery

The compression period is 30–45 days. First results emerge in 3–4 weeks, once swelling is down, and the final result is assessed at 3 months when the skin has fully tightened.

Recovery after liposuction

After tumescent liposuction you recover much faster than after a conventional procedure — most patients are back at work in 3–7 days. A little swelling and a raised temperature in the first week are a normal response to surgery. Compression garments stay on for 30–45 days, fixing the new contours and speeding up tissue recovery. In the first month, avoid the bathhouse, sauna, pool and intense sport. To get the best result and recover faster, we recommend lymphatic drainage massage, pressotherapy and a gradual return to activity. Visible changes appear in 3–4 weeks and the final result at 3 months.

Liposuction: frequently asked questions

About liposuction for patients from Glasgow

It is worth being clear about what the surgery does not do. Liposuction does not treat obesity and is not a way to lose kilos; if your weight is unstable, a nutritionist or endocrinologist comes first. Nor does it change the skin structure behind cellulite, although smoother contours make it less visible. What it does for people in Glasgow is remove local fat and reshape the silhouette.

Some rules matter after surgery. For the first seven days, no physical exertion or heavy lifting. For 4–6 weeks wear compression garments and avoid the bathhouse, sauna, pool and active sport. Alcohol and tanning beds are off-limits for at least a month. Your surgeon gives individual advice, and people from Glasgow can stay in touch with the surgeon throughout recovery.

If you are comparing liposuction prices in Glasgow, check what the figure depends on: the number of zones, their size and the chosen technique. Here the starting price is $1,200, the final sum is set after an examination and nothing hidden is added. Hormonal screening before surgery and surgeon support through recovery are part of the approach. Book a free consultation to get your plan.
