What is arthritis
and when does this treatment fit?

Arthritis is inflammation of a joint. Typical signs are pain at rest and at night, morning stiffness that lasts longer than half an hour, swelling, redness and warmth over the joint. The causes vary: autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid or psoriatic arthritis, gout, infection or an old injury.

Reducing inflammation and pain and supporting the tissues in the joint is what PRP and SVF can offer — not a replacement for rheumatology care of a systemic disease. With an active joint infection or a severe flare the procedure waits: first the doctor confirms the arthritis type and selects the moment.

Joints we treat

We treat large and small joints; the joint, the method and the injection count are set by the doctor after a review of your scans

Methods we use

Cell therapy (SVF) from your own adipose tissue

We take a small sample of your adipose tissue and process it to isolate the stromal vascular fraction (SVF), a mix of cells that take part in tissue repair. It is then combined with your own plasma and injected into the affected joint.

It is used in inflammatory arthritis — once the acute flare is over — for its influence on local inflammation and the repair of tissue.

PRP — platelet-rich plasma from your own blood

A small amount of your blood is used to separate plasma rich in platelets and growth factors, which is then injected into the joint. It helps settle inflammation and gives tissue repair better conditions.

It can be advised for rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory arthritis, as a single element of the wider treatment plan.

How the procedure goes: step by step

Consultation and scan review

After examining the joint and reviewing your X-rays, MRI or ultrasound, the doctor decides whether the procedure is right for you. Scans you already have can be sent ahead of the visit.

Blood sample for PRP

A vein provides a small amount of blood, which is later used to prepare platelet-rich plasma rich in growth factors.

The doctor tells you in advance which tests are needed.

Adipose tissue sample

With local anaesthetic, a small amount of adipose tissue — about 30 ml — is collected through a puncture on the inner thigh or abdomen, and no stitches are required.

Processing in a centrifuge

Spinning in a centrifuge divides the sample into layers; the stromal vascular fraction is isolated and blended with the platelet-rich plasma.
The whole procedure is done in one day.

Injection into the joint

Ultrasound guidance helps position it precisely as the prepared material is injected directly into the affected joint.

Follow-up

No hospital stay and no crutches. Once the procedure is done, the doctor remains in touch and tracks how your joint responds.

Follow-up visits

After 1 month
3 months
6 months

Follow-up visits are there so the doctor can see the joint's response and adjust the plan. Expect pain to ease over the first month, mobility to improve over about three months and the full effect to develop over around six months.

After the procedure

Small dressings are placed over the puncture sites, and most people leave the same day, returning to everyday activity within a day or two. A little more aching in the joint during the first week is an expected reaction. Over the first month pain generally eases; mobility and activity improve over about three months; the full effect develops over around six months. The duration differs between people and depends on the stage of the condition, body weight, activity and more, so a fixed result cannot be promised. Under a rheumatologist's care? Keep taking your prescribed medication unless you have discussed stopping it with them.

Joint treatment: frequently asked questions

What Birmingham residents ask about arthritis

Growth factors released by platelets influence the immune response and tissue repair. For patients from Birmingham with rheumatoid and other inflammatory arthritis, PRP may be one part of the overall plan.

Most patients in Birmingham go home the same day and return to normal daily activity within a day or two. During the first week the joint may ache a little more — this is an expected reaction.

How much does arthritis treatment cost in Birmingham? The doctor names the price after confirming the type of arthritis and choosing PRP, SVF or a combination. Send a request or message us in any messenger.
