What is regenerative
joint treatment?

Everything used in regenerative joint treatment comes from you: platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is made from your blood, and the stromal vascular fraction (SVF) from a little adipose tissue. The doctor injects it into the painful joint to lessen inflammation and pain and to support the joint's inner tissues.

Suitable for people with joint pain who would rather avoid or postpone surgery, or who were told a joint replacement is inevitable. The earlier the condition, the better the odds of a lasting effect — something the doctor judges from your scans.

Joints we treat

Small joints and large ones alike — your scans guide the doctor's choice of joint, method and number of injections

Methods we use

Cell therapy (SVF) from your own adipose tissue

A small sample of adipose tissue is taken and processed to obtain the stromal vascular fraction (SVF), a mix of cells that take part in tissue repair. Mixed with your own plasma, it is then injected into the affected joint.

It tends to be used when the joint is more visibly changed and a longer-lasting effect is being sought.

PRP — platelet-rich plasma from your own blood

A small amount of your blood is processed to separate plasma rich in platelets and growth factors, which is then injected into the joint. It helps settle inflammation and gives the tissues better conditions for repair.

It is suitable as a separate injection course or in combination with SVF.

How the procedure goes: step by step

Consultation and scan review

The doctor examines your joint, looks at your X-rays, MRI or ultrasound and decides whether the procedure is right for you. Scans you already have can be sent ahead of the visit.

Blood sample for PRP

Blood is drawn from a vein — only a small amount. Later, platelet-rich plasma with growth factors is made from it.

The doctor tells you in advance which tests are needed.

Adipose tissue sample

A puncture on the abdomen or inner thigh, made under local anaesthetic, is used to take a small portion of adipose tissue, about 30 ml. No stitches follow.

Processing in a centrifuge

A centrifuge splits the sample into layers. From these, the stromal vascular fraction is isolated and blended with the platelet-rich plasma.
The whole procedure is done in one day.

Injection into the joint

Ultrasound guidance allows the prepared material to be injected precisely, directly into the affected joint.

Follow-up

There are no crutches and you do not stay in hospital. After the procedure the doctor stays in contact and tracks the joint's response.

Follow-up visits

After 1 month
3 months
6 months

During follow-up visits the doctor checks the joint's response and adapts the plan: pain usually subsides in the first month, movement improves over about three months and the full effect develops over around six months.

After the procedure

You will most likely go home on the day of the procedure and be back to normal daily activity in a day or two, with small dressings over the puncture sites. The joint may ache a little more for the first week, which is an expected reaction. Over the first month pain usually eases, mobility and activity improve over about three months, and it takes around six months for the full effect to develop. How long the effect lasts depends on the individual — the stage of the condition, body weight, activity and other factors — so nobody can promise a fixed result. The doctor gives you personal advice on exercise and load in the first weeks.

Joint treatment: frequently asked questions

What Birmingham residents ask about joint treatment

If you have been told that joint replacement is the only choice, a second opinion is worth getting. In Birmingham, you can send your scans and reports for a free independent assessment before making any decision about surgery.

The procedure in Birmingham takes one day. Blood is taken from a vein for PRP, a small portion of adipose tissue is taken under local anaesthetic without stitches, the material is spun in a centrifuge, and the prepared mix is injected precisely into the affected joint.

How much does joint treatment cost in Birmingham? The answer comes after the doctor has seen your scans and examined the joint: PRP, SVF or a combination are priced differently. The first consultation is free. Send a request or message us in any messenger.
