What is liposuction
and who is it for?

Liposuction is a surgical way to remove surplus subcutaneous fat from troublesome areas. It is not meant for weight loss or as an alternative to diet and exercise. Instead, it sculpts specific zones: thigh saddlebags, a sagging belly and fat deposits on the back, flanks, arms or chin.

Liposuction suits people whose specific areas hold on to fat despite a normal weight and an active lifestyle. The key point: fat cells removed from treated areas do not grow back, so with a steady lifestyle the result lasts for a long time.

Liposuction techniques at City Medical Centre

Tumescent (classic) liposuction

First, a special solution based on saline with lidocaine, adrenaline and several other agents is injected into the treatment area. It loosens the fat tissue and constricts the vessels, minimizing blood loss and allowing gentle removal. The fat emulsion is then removed by vacuum through a thin cannula.

Recovery is much easier than after a conventional procedure, with almost no swelling or bruising after surgery.

VASER liposuction (ultrasound)

Before vacuum removal, ultrasound breaks the fat cells down. This makes the method ideal for body contouring and for defining pronounced muscle relief, i.e. athletic abs.

It also suits delicate areas.

How the surgery goes: from consultation to result

Surgeon consultation

The doctor discusses your wishes, carries out an examination, assesses fat deposits and rules out any contraindications. A hormonal screening is also ordered at City Medical Centre to help predict the long-term result.

Pre-operative tests

Blood tests (full blood count, coagulation panel, biochemistry, infections — HIV, hepatitis, syphilis), ECG, chest X-ray and a GP consultation if needed.

All tests can be done at the clinic with no waiting.

Preparation

Stop any medications affecting blood clotting 2 weeks before; stop alcohol and smoking a week before for quicker healing; eat for the last time 8 hours before.

Surgery day

Meeting your surgeon, marking the areas and fitting compression garments. Depending on the scope, anesthesia is local or general.
From 1 hour for small areas to 3–4 hours when procedures are combined.

Waking up and monitoring

With local anesthesia you are discharged 3–4 hours after surgery; with general anesthesia you stay one day in hospital under observation.

Recovery

Compression garments for 30–45 days; first results in 3–4 weeks as the swelling subsides; the final result assessed at 3 months, when the skin has tightened fully.

Recovery after liposuction

Tumescent liposuction means a much shorter recovery than a conventional procedure. Within 3–7 days most patients are working again. In week one there may be mild swelling and a raised temperature, which is a normal reaction to surgery. Compression garments are needed for 30–45 days: they fix the new contours and help tissues recover faster. Bathhouse, sauna, pool and intense sport are not allowed for the first month. Lymphatic drainage massage, pressotherapy and a gradual return to activity are recommended for the best result and faster recovery. First changes show in 3–4 weeks, the final result at 3 months.

Liposuction: frequently asked questions

Liposuction in Calgary step by step

Before any decision on liposuction in Calgary, it helps to know how the clinic approaches it. An endocrinologist rules out hormonal causes of excess fat, which improves the long-term result. Surgery uses tumescent and VASER techniques and closed fat-harvesting systems with precise volume control. Liposuction can also be combined with other procedures, for example a tummy tuck for the abdomen.

Preparation follows a simple schedule. Two weeks before surgery, medications that affect blood clotting are stopped; a week before, alcohol and smoking are cut out for faster healing; the last meal is eight hours before the operation. On the day itself, the surgeon meets you, marks the areas and fits compression garments. This is the routine for everyone in Calgary.

There are no surprises in the bill: the price is set after an examination, recorded in the contract and stays the same. Starting from $1,200 (≈ CA$1,750) per area, liposuction can be paid in interest-free instalments. Patients from Calgary begin with a free consultation where the surgeon answers questions about technique, recovery and contraindications before anything is decided.
