What is regenerative
joint treatment?

The treatment is regenerative and uses only what your body supplies: PRP (platelet-rich plasma from the blood) and SVF (the stromal vascular fraction from a small piece of adipose tissue). Injected into the joint that hurts, it aims to calm inflammation, ease pain and support the tissue within.

This treatment suits people with painful joints who would like to avoid or delay surgery, or who have been told that only a joint replacement will help. The earlier the stage, the better the prospect of a lasting result — the doctor judges this from your scans.

Joints we treat

Small joints and large ones alike — your scans guide the doctor's choice of joint, method and number of injections

Methods we use

Cell therapy (SVF) from your own adipose tissue

Cell therapy (SVF) from your own adipose tissue

A little of your adipose tissue is processed to isolate SVF — the stromal vascular fraction, which contains cells involved in repairing tissue. It is then combined with your own plasma and injected into the joint.

It is usually the choice when changes in the joint are more marked and the aim is a longer-lasting effect.

PRP — platelet-rich plasma from your own blood

PRP — platelet-rich plasma from your own blood

Plasma rich in platelets and growth factors comes from a small amount of your blood; once injected into the joint, it helps reduce inflammation and sets up better conditions for tissue repair.

Used by itself as an injection course, or together with SVF.

How the procedure goes: step by step

Consultation and scan review

Your joint is examined and the doctor studies your X-rays, MRI or ultrasound to judge whether the procedure is suitable. Existing scans can be sent before the appointment.

Blood sample for PRP

From a vein, a small amount of blood is taken. It is later used to prepare plasma rich in platelets and growth factors.

The doctor tells you in advance which tests are needed.

Adipose tissue sample

The doctor numbs the area with local anaesthetic and takes about 30 ml of adipose tissue through a puncture on the abdomen or inner thigh. Stitches are not needed.

Processing in a centrifuge

A centrifuge splits the sample into layers. From these, the stromal vascular fraction is isolated and blended with the platelet-rich plasma.
The whole procedure is done in one day.

Injection into the joint

The prepared material is injected straight into the affected joint under ultrasound guidance, which helps to place it precisely.

Follow-up

No crutches, no hospital stay — and after the procedure the doctor keeps in touch to follow the joint's response.

Follow-up visits

After 1 month
3 months
6 months

The doctor uses follow-up visits to see the joint's response and change the plan if needed. Usually pain eases during the first month, mobility gets better over about three months, and the full effect takes around six months.

After the procedure

Most people go home the same day and return to normal daily activity within a day or two; the puncture sites are covered with small dressings. During the first week the joint may ache a little more — this is an expected reaction. Over the first month the pain usually eases, over about three months mobility and activity improve, and the full effect develops over around six months. How long it lasts differs from person to person and depends on the stage of the condition, body weight, activity and other factors — no one can promise a fixed result. The doctor gives you individual advice on exercise and load for the first weeks.

Joint treatment: frequently asked questions

Joint treatment in Calgary step by step

Joint treatment in Calgary is built around keeping your own joint. Instead of a long rehabilitation after surgery, you get injections under local anaesthetic, no crutches and no hospital stay, and the doctor stays in touch afterwards.

The procedure in Calgary takes one day. Blood is taken from a vein for PRP, a small portion of adipose tissue is taken under local anaesthetic without stitches, the material is spun in a centrifuge, and the prepared mix is injected precisely into the affected joint.
