What is liposuction
and who is it for?

In liposuction, the surgeon removes excess fat lying under the skin in problem areas. It won't replace diet and exercise, and it is not a weight-loss method. Its job is targeted contouring: removing saddlebags on the thighs, a loose belly and fat on the back, flanks, arms or chin.

The procedure is right for people with a normal weight and active lifestyle whose certain areas still store fat. Key fact: removed fat cells do not return to treated areas, so with a steady routine the result is long-lasting.

Liposuction techniques at City Medical Centre

Tumescent (classic) liposuction

It begins with injecting a special solution into the area: saline plus lidocaine, adrenaline and several other agents. The solution loosens fatty tissue and constricts vessels, so there is little blood loss and removal is gentle. After this, the fat emulsion is removed by vacuum through a thin cannula.

Almost no swelling or bruising follows the surgery, and recovery is much lighter than after a conventional procedure.

VASER liposuction (ultrasound)

Ultrasound is used to break down fat cells ahead of vacuum removal. The method is ideal when you want clear muscle relief — athletic abs — and body contouring.

It also suits delicate areas.

How the surgery goes: from consultation to result

Surgeon consultation

The doctor hears your wishes, examines and assesses the fat deposits and rules out contraindications. At City Medical Centre a hormonal screening is also ordered, which helps predict the long-term result.

Pre-operative tests

ECG, chest X-ray, blood tests (complete count, coagulation panel, biochemistry, HIV, hepatitis and syphilis) and, where needed, a GP consultation.

All tests can be done at the clinic with no waiting.

Preparation

2 weeks before surgery, drop medicines that affect clotting. One week before, stop drinking and smoking for faster healing. Last meal — 8 hours before.

Surgery day

The surgeon meets you, marks the areas and fits the compression garments. Local or general anesthesia is used depending on the scope.
Time on the table: from 1 hour (small areas) to 3–4 hours (combined procedure).

Waking up and monitoring

Hospital stay: one day under observation after general anesthesia, or discharge 3–4 hours after surgery with local anesthesia.

Recovery

You wear compression for 30–45 days. First results come in 3–4 weeks as the swelling fades; the final result is evaluated at 3 months after the skin fully tightens.

Recovery after liposuction

Recovery after tumescent liposuction is much shorter than after a conventional procedure. Most patients are back at work within 3–7 days. Mild swelling and a slightly raised temperature are possible in the first week — a normal response to surgery. Compression garments are worn for 30–45 days to fix the new contours and speed up tissue recovery. For the first month, bathhouse, sauna, pool and intense sport are off-limits. For the best result and quicker recovery we recommend lymphatic drainage massage, pressotherapy and a gradual return to activity. First visible changes come in 3–4 weeks, the final result at 3 months.

Liposuction: frequently asked questions

What Winnipeg residents ask about liposuction

Liposuction is not only a women's procedure. The abdomen and flanks are the top request for both sexes, and in men the chest is a separate case: the fat component of gynecomastia or pseudogynecomastia can be removed surgically. VASER, with ultrasound breakdown of fat, helps define pronounced muscle relief. Men in Winnipeg can discuss which technique suits their goals at the consultation.

Follow-up does not end at discharge. The surgeon stays in touch throughout recovery, and planned check-ups take place at 7 days and at 3 months. Until the end of the year, a post-op follow-up consultation with the surgeon is at the clinic's expense, to review the result and answer questions. Patients from Winnipeg also get advice on returning gradually to activity.

The cost is built around your zones: from $1,200 (≈ CA$1,750) for the most compact area, rising for larger combinations such as the torso or the abdomen with flanks. Nothing is added later, because the contract fixes the price. Winnipeg residents can split payment into interest-free instalments and begin with a free surgeon consultation, booked through the form on the page.
