Recovery after liposuction

After tumescent liposuction, recovery is much shorter than after a conventional procedure. Most patients return to work within 7–10 days. In the first week, mild swelling and a raised temperature are possible — a normal response to surgery. Compression garments are worn for 30–45 days: they fix the new contours and speed up tissue recovery. In the first month, bathhouse, sauna, pool and intense sport are off-limits. For the best result and faster recovery we recommend lymphatic drainage massage, pressotherapy and a gradual return to activity. First visible changes show 2 weeks after surgery, when the main swelling subsides; the final result forms in 3–6 months.

Post-op check-ups

After 7 days, at 3 months and at 6 months. Until the end of the year, get a post-surgery consultation with your surgeon to review results and get more information, at the clinic's expense.

Liposuction in Boorama: a short guide

It is worth being clear about what the surgery does not do. Liposuction does not treat obesity and is not a way to lose kilos; if your weight is unstable, a nutritionist or endocrinologist comes first. Nor does it change the skin structure behind cellulite, although smoother contours make it less visible. What it does for people in Boorama is remove local fat and reshape the silhouette.

Is it painful? No: the procedure is done under anaesthesia, local or general depending on scope. Afterwards mild discomfort is possible and is relieved with painkillers prescribed by the doctor. Most patients return to their usual routine in 7–10 days, while swelling and bruising resolve by weeks 4–5. That is the typical course for people in Boorama after liposuction.

There are no surprises in the bill: the price is set after an examination, recorded in the contract and stays the same. Starting from $1,200 (≈ SOS 690,000) per area, liposuction can be paid in interest-free instalments. Patients from Boorama begin with a free consultation where the surgeon answers questions about technique, recovery and contraindications before anything is decided.

Boorama and the questions patients ask about liposuction

Boorama is the largest city of the Awdal region in the northwest of Somaliland and the commercial seat of the province. It lies near the border with Ethiopia, and that shapes daily life: people move between market, workplace, school and family house all day, and a plan for any operation has to fit into that rhythm. A 2023 estimate puts the city at 300,000 inhabitants, and the broader district at 398,609 according to a 2014 estimate. For a city of this size, patients from Boorama usually start with the same practical questions. How long will I be away from work? Will people notice? How soon can I wear my usual clothes? What does the surgeon actually do?

Liposuction is a contouring procedure. Under local or general anaesthesia the surgeon removes fat through 3–5 mm micro-punctures. The work takes from 1 hour for small areas to 3–4 hours for a combined procedure, and the total operating time falls in the range of 1–4 hours. The techniques are tumescent and VASER, with micro-incisions of 3–5 mm and precise volume control. The aim is a smooth contour that keeps the natural proportions of your body, not a dramatic change that looks out of place.

City Medical Centre works with patients from Boorama through free online consultation. The coordinators are available 24/7 on Telegram and WhatsApp, so you can ask a question in the evening after the shop or the lesson is over, or early in the morning before the heat builds. You do not need to rearrange your week to speak with us. We adapt to your pace, and nobody asks you to decide on the first message.

Hot semi-arid climate: what it means for recovery

Boorama has a hot semi-arid climate. June is the hottest month with an average temperature of 24.1 °C, and January is the coolest at 17.1 °C. Average temperatures vary by only 7 °C over the year, so there is no truly cold season in which a person could hide a compression garment under heavy layers, and no long winter in which swelling is simply less noticeable. For Somalia as a whole, hot conditions prevail year-round, with monsoon winds and irregular rainfall. Anyone planning liposuction in Boorama should plan for warmth during every phase of recovery.

The practical points are general but real. Compression garments are worn for 30–45 days, and for 4–6 weeks you must avoid the bathhouse, sauna, pool and active sport. In a warm climate the garment can feel uncomfortable, so choose loose, breathable outer clothing in light cotton that fits over it without pulling. Wash and dry the garment as the surgeon instructs and keep a second one if the centre recommends it, so that you always have a clean, dry one. Skin that sweats under a garment needs attention to hygiene, and any redness or irritation should be reported to the surgeon rather than ignored.

Sun is the second factor. Tanning beds are off-limits for at least a month, and the same caution applies to long hours in direct sunshine on healing skin: the small puncture marks fade best when they are protected. Dust is a normal part of life in a semi-arid city, and dressings should stay clean and dry, so on windy days it makes sense to stay in the house or cover the treated area properly. Your surgeon gives all individual recommendations after surgery, and they take precedence over any general advice written here.

Planning around work, study and the rhythm of the city

Boorama is a commercial centre, and many residents run or work in shops, trade, transport or services. Others work in education: the city has 52 primary and secondary schools, public, private and religious, with a total of 15,314 students. Teachers, school staff and parents therefore make up a large part of the people who ask us about timing. The medical facts help here. Most patients get back to their usual routine and work in 7–10 days. That is a general guide, not a promise, and desk work, standing work and physical work will not feel the same.

If you work behind a counter or at a desk, a return after 7–10 days is realistic for most patients. If your job involves lifting, loading goods or long hours on your feet, remember that for the first 7 days there is no physical exertion or heavy lifting at all, and that active sport is excluded for 4–6 weeks. Talk to the surgeon about your actual duties: ask whether you can return to lighter tasks first and whether a colleague can cover the heavier work for a few more weeks. A short conversation with your employer beforehand usually saves trouble.

Students and teachers should also think about the school calendar. A quiet period, a break between terms or a time when someone can take over lessons makes recovery easier. Parents of young children need to arrange help with lifting and carrying in the first week. Families in Boorama tend to live close together, which is a practical advantage: ask a relative to take over the heavy tasks at home so that you can rest without pressure. Tell us your schedule during the online consultation and the coordinator will help you build the plan around it.

Family events, meals and the weeks after surgery

Every city has its own calendar of weddings, family gatherings and holidays, and in a close community in Boorama these events matter. It is worth choosing a date for liposuction that does not collide with a big occasion you cannot miss. Swelling and bruising clear by weeks 4–5, and the first changes show at 2 weeks, once the main swelling subsides. If a wedding or a family celebration is coming, leave a comfortable margin: planning the operation well before the event is better than rushing to be ready.

Shared meals are part of social life in many families, and it is natural to wonder how that fits with recovery. Liposuction is not a replacement for a balanced way of eating. It reshapes areas where fat remains despite a normal lifestyle, and the contour is easier to maintain if daily habits stay sensible. Alcohol is off-limits for at least a month after surgery, and giving up smoking, alcohol and medicines that affect clotting, such as aspirin, 7–10 days before is required. Explain this to your family early so they understand why you will be careful at the table and at gatherings.

Heavy meals are not forbidden by the medical facts, but during the first days you will feel more comfortable if you eat lightly, drink enough water and avoid lifting pots or serving large dishes for the family. Hosting a gathering at home in the first 7 days is not a good idea; let someone else take the lead. By the time of the 7-day check-up you will usually have a clearer idea of how you feel and what you can do, and the surgeon will answer your questions about daily activities.

How the free online consultation works from Boorama

You do not need to go anywhere to begin. Write to the coordinators on Telegram or WhatsApp from Boorama; they work 24/7, with easy booking and a personal approach. The first step is a conversation about what bothers you, which areas you are thinking about, your general health, previous operations and the medicines you take. You can send photographs as instructed, and the surgeon assesses the areas by video or by images, without charge.

After this first consultation you will receive all the instructions. Pre-operative tests are required: blood tests, ECG, ultrasound, and consultations with a GP and an anaesthesiologist. Ask the coordinator which of these can be completed with the usual medical services in your own city, so that you only deal with the results rather than repeating them. Keep copies of all reports in a folder on your phone: they make the next consultation faster.

The consultation is also the moment to talk about anaesthesia. Local or general anaesthesia is possible: with local anaesthesia you go home 3–4 hours after surgery, and with general anaesthesia you stay one day in a comfortable ward under medical supervision. The choice depends on the volume and number of areas, on your health and on your preference. Because the connection is online, you can include a husband, wife, sister or parent in the call so that the person who will help you at home hears the same instructions you do.

Who is a candidate and who is not

We operate from age 18+, if there are no contraindications. There is no upper age limit: after an examination and health assessment, the decision is made individually. A good candidate is generally an adult in stable health who has local fat deposits that do not respond to a normal diet and activity, with reasonably elastic skin and realistic expectations. Liposuction shapes the body; it does not treat a general weight problem.

The World Health Organization describes overweight and obesity as an abnormal or excessive accumulation of fat that may impair health, and treats them as a wider health matter that calls for medical attention and lifestyle measures. This is the right way to see liposuction: a contouring procedure for chosen areas, not a way to lose a large amount of weight. If you have a significant weight problem, a conversation with your doctor about overall health comes first, and the surgeon will tell you honestly whether the procedure is suitable now or later.

Contraindications are decided by the surgeon after reading your tests and your history. In general terms, conditions affecting the heart, blood clotting, active infections, and certain chronic illnesses need careful review. Smoking, alcohol and clotting-related medicines must be stopped 7–10 days before. Be frank about everything you take, including herbal remedies and supplements that are common in households. Hiding a detail to hurry the process does not help you; complete information is what makes a safe plan possible.

The operation itself and the hours afterwards

On the day, the surgeon marks the areas and a compression garment is fitted. Under local or general anaesthesia fat is removed through 3–5 mm micro-punctures, using tumescent and VASER techniques with precise volume control. Duration runs from 1 hour for small areas to 3–4 hours for a combined procedure. The punctures are only 3–5 mm across and usually need no stitches. Once healed, the marks are barely visible, and with proper care during recovery they fade completely.

With local anaesthesia you go home 3–4 hours after surgery. For someone in Boorama, that means arranging in advance who will accompany you, how you will rest, and what is ready at home: loose clothes, drinking water, light food, a clean spare garment and the surgeon's instructions on your phone. With general anaesthesia you stay one day in a comfortable ward under medical supervision and go home after 1 day.

Keep the coordinator's chat open during the first days. If something worries you, such as increasing pain, unusual swelling on one side, fever or changes in the dressing, send a message at once; the coordinators are available around the clock. The surgeon follows your recovery at check-ups after 7 days, 3 months and 6 months, and check-ups, dressings and aftercare advice are already included in the cost of surgery.

Recovery timeline, return to work and sport

The timeline is clear. The first 7 days mean no physical exertion or heavy lifting. Most patients return to their usual routine and work in 7–10 days. Compression garments are worn for 30–45 days, and for 4–6 weeks you avoid the bathhouse, sauna, pool and active sport. Swelling and bruising clear by weeks 4–5. The first changes show at 2 weeks, an interim result is assessed at 1.5–2 months, and the final contour forms in 3–6 months, once the tissues have fully adapted.

For an active person in Boorama, whether you play football with friends, walk long distances in the city, run or exercise at home, this means patience. Start with gentle walking when the surgeon allows it and wait for permission before returning to training. A very warm day is not a good day for the first outings: choose cooler hours and wear light clothing over the garment. Skipping the garment because it is warm is the mistake we see most often, and it can affect the result.

Judge the result at the right moment. A person who looks at the mirror in the second week and sees swelling may feel disappointed, while the same person at 3 or 6 months sees the contour that the surgery produced. Photograph yourself under the same light at each stage and bring the pictures to the check-ups at 7 days, 3 and 6 months. Until the end of the year you can also get a post-surgery consultation with your surgeon to review results and receive more information, free of charge to you.

Boorama's water, heat and the hydration plan after liposuction

Boorama has a hot semi-arid climate, and the dry air changes how a person feels in the days after surgery. Thirst comes quietly in dry weather, and a patient wearing a compression garment may sweat less visibly than expected while still losing fluid. Plan to keep a bottle of water within reach in the room where you rest, and drink steadily through the day instead of waiting for thirst. Light meals and plenty of fluids usually make the first days easier.

Between the coolest month, January at 17.1 °C on average, and the hottest, June at 24.1 °C, the yearly swing is only 7 °C. This means the same hydration habit works all year. In June, rest in the shadiest, best ventilated room of the house during the day. In January, mornings and evenings are cooler, so short gentle walks are more pleasant at those hours once the surgeon permits walking.

Alcohol is off-limits for at least a month, and this includes the weeks when you are feeling well and tempted to return to normal habits. Tell your surgeon about every medicine and supplement you drink or take, because some affect clotting. Ask the coordinator in the online consultation for a simple written list of what to avoid, and keep it on your phone.

Who helps at home: family support during the first week

Boorama is a city where relatives usually live near each other, and that is a real help for the first 7 days, when there is no physical exertion or heavy lifting. Decide before the operation who will cook, who will look after children, who will go to the market and who will accompany you home. A written plan, even a short one, prevents arguments and prevents you from doing too much on the second day because nobody else is free.

With local anaesthesia you go home 3–4 hours after surgery, so the person who accompanies you should be ready on the day itself. With general anaesthesia you stay one day under medical supervision, and a relative can be with you on the phone through the coordinator chat. Put the surgeon's instructions, the dressing advice and the coordinator contact in the phone of that relative as well as in yours.

Invite this person to the online consultation. They will hear what the surgeon says about garments, dressings, rest and warning signs, and they will not depend on your memory. Husbands, wives, sisters, mothers and adult children all do this well. Their questions are often practical ones you would forget, such as how to help you dress over the garment or how to keep the room clean.

Keeping a record: photographs, notes and check-ups

A simple record helps you and the surgeon judge progress honestly. Before surgery, take photographs of the areas in the same light, from the front, side and back. Repeat them at 2 weeks, when the first changes show, at 1.5–2 months, when the interim result is assessed, and at the check-ups after 3 and 6 months. Use the same room and the same distance each time.

Add a short written note on swelling, comfort, sleep and the garment. Swelling and bruising clear by weeks 4–5, so a note from week 2 that looks worrying will look very different by week 5. Seeing the pattern on paper reduces anxiety, and it gives the surgeon concrete information instead of a general impression.

Bring the photographs and notes to the check-ups after 7 days, 3 months and 6 months, or send them to the coordinators when asked. Until the end of the year you can also have a post-surgery consultation with your surgeon to review results. Patients in Boorama can do all of this online, from home, without losing a working day.

Choosing the season and the questions for your surgeon

Boorama has no cold season: the gap between the coolest month, January at 17.1 °C on average, and the hottest, June at 24.1 °C, is modest. So the choice of season is less about avoiding the heat and more about your own calendar. Rainfall is uneven, with a difference of 110 millimetres between the driest and wettest months, and heavy rain or dust can make moving around less comfortable in the first days. Cooler months such as January are easier for wearing a garment, while in the hottest weeks you will need more care with hygiene and rest. A quiet period at work and at home is as important as the weather.

Prepare your questions before the online consultation. Ask which areas are realistic to treat together and how long the surgery will take. Ask whether local or general anaesthesia is better for you and why, how many days off you should plan given your job, and which signs after surgery need an immediate message. Ask when you can wash, drive, lift your child and return to sport, and what you must do about the garment in hot weather. Ask what will be assessed at the check-ups after 7 days, 3 and 6 months.

Also ask the surgeon to explain the limits. A smooth contour that keeps the natural proportions of your body is the goal, and a good surgeon will say clearly what cannot be achieved, which areas have limited potential, and what depends on your skin and your habits. Write the answers down. A calm decision, taken after a clear conversation, is what we want for every patient from Boorama.

How can I get a consultation from Boorama?

Write to the coordinators on Telegram or WhatsApp. They are available 24/7, and the first online consultation is free. You describe the areas, your health and your goals, and the surgeon gives an assessment. You can do this from home and include a family member in the call.

How long does liposuction take?

The surgery lasts 1–4 hours: from 1 hour for small areas to 3–4 hours for a combined procedure. The surgeon marks the areas and a compression garment is fitted, and the fat is removed through 3–5 mm micro-punctures using tumescent and VASER techniques.

Will I stay in hospital?

It depends on the anaesthesia. With local anaesthesia you go home 3–4 hours after surgery. With general anaesthesia you stay one day in a comfortable ward under medical supervision. The choice is made with the surgeon, considering your health and the volume.

When can I go back to work?

Most patients return to their usual routine and work in 7–10 days. If your job involves lifting or long hours on your feet, discuss it with the surgeon, because the first 7 days exclude physical exertion and heavy lifting, and active sport is excluded for 4–6 weeks.

Is the hot weather a problem for the compression garment?

Compression garments are worn for 30–45 days and the heat can make them uncomfortable, but they should not be skipped. Wear light, loose clothing over them, keep the garment clean and dry, and ask the surgeon what to do if the skin becomes irritated.

Will there be visible scars?

The punctures are only 3–5 mm across and usually need no stitches. Once healed, the marks are barely visible, and with proper care during recovery they fade completely. Protect the healing skin from strong sun, and avoid tanning beds for at least a month.

How should I prepare?

Give up smoking, alcohol and medicines that affect clotting, such as aspirin, 7–10 days before surgery. Pre-operative tests are required: blood tests, ECG, ultrasound, and consultations with a GP and an anaesthesiologist. You receive all instructions after the first consultation.

When will I see the final result?

The first changes show at 2 weeks, once the main swelling subsides. An interim result is assessed at 1.5–2 months, and the final contours form in 3–6 months. Swelling and bruising clear by weeks 4–5. Check-ups take place after 7 days, 3 months and 6 months.

Who can have liposuction?

We operate from age 18+, if there are no contraindications. There is no upper age limit: after an examination and health assessment, the decision is made individually. Liposuction is a contouring procedure, not a treatment for general overweight.

Are check-ups included?

Yes. Check-ups, dressings and aftercare advice are already included in the cost of surgery. The surgeon follows your recovery at 7 days, 3 and 6 months. Until the end of the year you can also have a post-surgery consultation to review results, free of charge to you.

Does the dry climate of Boorama change how I should recover?

Mostly it affects comfort. Drink water regularly, rest in a shaded and ventilated room, wear light cotton clothing over the compression garment and keep dressings clean and dry. Compression garments are still worn for 30–45 days, and the surgeon gives all individual recommendations.

Can a relative join the online consultation?

Yes. It is a good idea. A husband, wife, sister, parent or adult child can hear the same instructions about aftercare and warning signs, and help you at home during the first 7 days, when heavy lifting and physical exertion are excluded.

What should I photograph for the check-ups?

Photograph the treated areas in the same light and from the same positions before surgery, at 2 weeks, at 1.5–2 months and at the check-ups after 3 and 6 months. This helps you and the surgeon compare the contour as it forms over 3–6 months.
