What is liposuction
and who is it for?

Liposuction is a surgical method of removing excess subcutaneous fat from problem areas. It is not a way to lose weight or a substitute for diet and exercise. Its goal is targeted contouring: removing saddlebags on the thighs, a sagging belly, and fat deposits on the back, flanks, arms or chin.

Liposuction works for you if specific areas hold on to fat even though your weight is normal and you stay active. Fat cells removed from those areas don't grow back, so with a stable lifestyle the result stays for a long time.

Liposuction techniques at City Medical Centre

Tumescent (classic) liposuction

First, a special saline-based solution with lidocaine, adrenaline and several other agents is injected into the area. It loosens fat tissue and constricts the vessels, keeping blood loss to a minimum and allowing gentle removal. The fat emulsion is then suctioned out through a thin cannula.

After surgery, bruising and swelling are nearly absent and recovery goes much more easily than after a standard procedure.

VASER liposuction (ultrasound)

Ultrasound breaks down fat cells before they are removed by vacuum. It is the ideal method for bringing out muscle relief — athletic abs — and contouring the body.

It also suits delicate areas.

How the surgery goes: from consultation to result

Surgeon consultation

The doctor takes note of your wishes, examines you, evaluates the fat deposits and excludes contraindications. At City Medical Centre we also order hormonal screening to help predict the long-term result.

Pre-operative tests

Complete blood count, coagulation panel, biochemistry and infection tests (HIV, hepatitis, syphilis), an ECG, chest X-ray and, if needed, a consultation with a GP.

All tests can be done at the clinic with no waiting.

Preparation

For faster healing, stop alcohol and smoking a week before. Stop medications that affect blood clotting 2 weeks before. Have the last meal 8 hours before.

Surgery day

You meet the surgeon, the areas are marked and compression garments are fitted. Anesthesia is local or general, depending on the scope.
The operation lasts 1 hour (small areas) to 3–4 hours (combined procedure).

Waking up and monitoring

Patients under general anesthesia stay one day in hospital for observation, while those under local anesthesia leave 3–4 hours after surgery.

Recovery

The compression period is 30–45 days. First results emerge in 3–4 weeks, once swelling is down, and the final result is assessed at 3 months when the skin has fully tightened.

Recovery after liposuction

After tumescent liposuction, recovery is much shorter than after a conventional procedure. Most patients return to work within 3–7 days. In the first week, mild swelling and a raised temperature are possible — a normal response to surgery. Compression garments are worn for 30–45 days: they fix the new contours and speed up tissue recovery. In the first month, bathhouse, sauna, pool and intense sport are off-limits. For the best result and faster recovery we recommend lymphatic drainage massage, pressotherapy and a gradual return to activity. First visible changes appear in 3–4 weeks, the final result at 3 months.

Liposuction: frequently asked questions

About liposuction for patients from Abuja

It is worth being clear about what the surgery does not do. Liposuction does not treat obesity and is not a way to lose kilos; if your weight is unstable, a nutritionist or endocrinologist comes first. Nor does it change the skin structure behind cellulite, although smoother contours make it less visible. What it does for people in Abuja is remove local fat and reshape the silhouette.

Duration depends on scope: from about one hour for a small area to three or four hours for a combined procedure. Anaesthesia is local or general depending on how much is treated. After general anaesthesia you spend one day in hospital under observation; after local anaesthesia you go home three to four hours later. The same approach applies to patients from Abuja.

Budget matters, so the price is agreed upfront and written into an official contract with a guarantee. Liposuction starts from $1,200 (≈ ₦1,600,000), and interest-free instalments make planning easier. The clinic has 400+ successful surgeries and 10 years of liposuction experience behind it. To begin, anyone from Abuja simply leaves a phone number and waits for the coordinator's call.
