What is a tummy tuck
and who is it for?

With a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), the front abdominal wall is tightened surgically and excess stretched skin and fat are removed. It neither causes weight loss nor replaces diet and exercise. The aim is a flat abdominal contour — removing the overhanging skin-and-fat apron, repairing separated rectus muscles and, where necessary, forming a new navel.

People choose it when childbirth, a C-section or major weight loss leaves excess skin and diastasis, a separation of the rectus abdominis muscles. Diet and exercise won't fix it: stretched skin does not shrink, and separated muscles don't come together without surgery. Plan pregnancy 12 months or more later; surgery isn't done during breastfeeding.

Tummy tuck techniques at City Medical Centre

Classic tummy tuck

The classic operation starts above the pubic area with a horizontal incision whose length depends on the excess tissue. Its scar line is planned so underwear and swimwear hide it. The surgeon repairs the separated rectus muscles, removes excess skin and fat, repositions the navel and places drains — all in 2–4 hours under general anaesthesia.

Right for marked excess skin, rectus diastasis and a caesarean scar.

Mini tummy tuck with diastasis repair

A mini tummy tuck covers a narrower issue: correction of the lower abdomen only, a shorter incision and no moving of the navel. It suits a small amount of excess skin when diastasis or overhang above a C-section scar is the main concern; recovery is shorter in this case. The surgeon chooses the technique at an in-person consultation after assessing the abdominal muscles and skin.

Minor excess skin? Less trauma and a shorter recovery.

How the surgery goes: from consultation to result

Surgeon consultation

Your surgeon listens to what you want, examines you, evaluates fat deposits and rules out contraindications. City Medical Centre also orders a hormone screening — it helps predict the long-term result.

Pre-surgery check-up

A complete blood count, coagulation panel, biochemistry and infection screening (HIV, hepatitis, syphilis), an ECG, chest X-ray and, when needed, a GP consultation.

All tests can be done at the clinic with no waiting.

Preparation

For faster healing, no alcohol or smoking for a week before. Medicines affecting blood clotting are stopped 2 weeks before. The last meal — 8 hours before.

Surgery day

You meet the surgeon, the skin is marked and compression garments are fitted. The surgery is done under general anaesthesia and lasts 2–4 hours.

Waking up and monitoring

The patient remains in hospital under medical supervision for 1–3 days after surgery.

Recovery

The compression binder stays on for 1.5–2 months. Office work resumes after 2–3 weeks, most swelling goes within 30 days, and the final result is assessed at 3 months.

Recovery after a tummy tuck

Following surgery, the patient stays 1–3 days in hospital under medical supervision. Drains usually come out after two days, and stitches after 7 days. For 1.5–2 months a compression binder supports the abdominal wall and shapes a smooth contour. Within 30 days most swelling goes, and office work is possible after 2–3 weeks. Sports, sauna and heavy lifting are not allowed for 2–3 months; in the early days, sleep on your back with your knees bent. By 12 months the scar is fully mature: faded and barely noticeable.

Tummy tuck: frequently asked questions

Can a tummy tuck be done together with liposuction or diastasis repair?

Yes, combining is allowed and extremely common. Liposuction of the waist and flanks is added to a tummy tuck, as is rectus diastasis repair after childbirth. With this combination, recovery is shorter, and the surgeon will tell you in person at a consultation how extensive the procedure will be.

About abdominoplasty for patients from Leeds

Two techniques are available. The classic tummy tuck uses a horizontal incision above the pubic area, repairs the muscles, removes excess tissue and repositions the navel; it suits marked excess skin and a C-section scar. The mini tummy tuck corrects only the lower abdomen through a shorter incision without moving the navel. For each patient from Leeds, the surgeon chooses in person.

Compression is not optional: without the garment recovery is worse, because it supports the tissues and reduces swelling. For the first 3–4 weeks it is worn around the clock, then for about another month during the day; the operating surgeon names the exact period. For at least a month, sauna, pool, tanning beds, alcohol and smoking are off-limits. Leeds patients receive the full list of restrictions from the surgeon.

If you are comparing tummy tuck options in Leeds, look at more than the operation itself. Here the approach includes hormone screening before surgery, tests at the clinic with no waiting, a hospital stay under medical supervision and surgeon support until the result. The cost is calculated after a free consultation and fixed in the contract. Leave a request to arrange yours.
