What is a tummy tuck
and who is it for?

Abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, is surgery that tightens the front abdominal wall by removing surplus stretched skin and fat. It won't make you lose weight and is no substitute for diet and exercise. Its goal is a flat contour of the abdomen — removing the overhanging skin-and-fat apron, repairing separated rectus muscles and creating a new navel where needed.

It is chosen when excess skin and diastasis — separation of the rectus abdominis muscles — remain after childbirth, a C-section or major weight loss. Diet and exercise cannot fix this: stretched skin does not shrink, and separated muscles do not come back together without surgery. Pregnancy should be planned 12 months or more later, and surgery is not done while breastfeeding.

Tummy tuck techniques at City Medical Centre

Classic tummy tuck

First comes a horizontal incision above the pubic area, whose length depends on how much excess tissue there is. The scar line is planned so that underwear and swimwear hide it. Then the surgeon repairs separated rectus muscles, removes excess skin and fat, repositions the navel and places drains. The classic operation takes 2–4 hours under general anaesthesia.

Indicated for marked excess skin, rectus diastasis and a C-section scar.

Mini tummy tuck with diastasis repair

The mini version addresses a narrower issue: the lower abdomen alone is corrected, the incision is shorter, and the navel remains where it is. It fits a small excess of skin when the main problem is diastasis or an overhang above a C-section scar, and recovery is shorter. At an in-person consultation the surgeon assesses the abdominal muscles and skin and chooses the technique.

Less traumatic, with shorter recovery, when excess skin is minor.

How the surgery goes: from consultation to result

Surgeon consultation

The surgeon listens to you, performs an examination, assesses fat deposits and rules out contraindications. At City Medical Centre there is also a hormone screening — useful for predicting the long-term result.

Pre-surgery check-up

ECG, chest X-ray and blood tests (complete count, coagulation panel, biochemistry, HIV, hepatitis, syphilis), plus a GP consultation where needed.

All tests can be done at the clinic with no waiting.

Preparation

Medicines affecting clotting stop 2 weeks before, alcohol and smoking stop a week before for faster healing, and the last meal is 8 hours before.

Surgery day

You see the surgeon, who marks the skin, and compression garments are fitted. Under general anaesthesia the surgery lasts 2–4 hours.

Waking up and monitoring

The patient remains in hospital under medical supervision for 1–3 days after surgery.

Recovery

The compression binder stays on for 1.5–2 months. Office work resumes after 2–3 weeks, most swelling goes within 30 days, and the final result is assessed at 3 months.

Recovery after a tummy tuck

The patient remains in hospital under medical supervision for 1–3 days right after surgery. Drains are usually taken out after two days and stitches after 7 days. A compression binder, worn for 1.5–2 months, supports the abdominal wall and shapes a smooth contour. Within 30 days most swelling goes; after 2–3 weeks you can return to office work. Sports, sauna and heavy lifting are not allowed for 2–3 months, and sleeping on your back with knees bent is recommended at first. By 12 months the scar has matured fully: it fades and is hardly visible.

Tummy tuck: frequently asked questions

Tummy tuck with liposuction or diastasis repair — can they be combined?

Yes, you can combine them, and in practice it is very common. Liposuction of the flanks and waist is added to the tummy tuck, and after childbirth, rectus diastasis repair. Such a combination shortens recovery, and the surgeon will explain at an in-person consultation how extensive the procedure will be.

What Jos residents ask about a tummy tuck

Diastasis is not always part of the picture. Repair is done only when the rectus abdominis muscles are actually separated: the surgeon sees it at the examination and, if in doubt, it is confirmed by ultrasound. When needed, the muscles are brought together during the tummy tuck itself, with no separate procedure. Patients from Jos learn at the consultation whether their case requires it.

Recovery has three milestones. Office work is possible after 2–3 weeks, swelling and tightness pass by 1.5–2 months, and the final result and scar are assessed at 6–12 months once tissues have adapted. Most swelling goes within 30 days. Sport, sauna and heavy lifting wait 2–3 months, and sleeping on your back with knees bent is advised at first. The same timeline applies to Jos patients.

How much is a tummy tuck in Jos? The answer comes at a free consultation: the surgeon examines the abdominal muscles and skin, chooses a classic or mini technique and decides whether diastasis repair or liposuction should be added. Only then is the price calculated and written into the contract. Send a request or message us in any messenger to get started.
