What is osteoarthritis
(arthrosis)?

Osteoarthritis is a chronic condition, also referred to as arthrosis, in which the joint's cartilage thins and erodes step by step. As the cushioning layer fails, bones start rubbing together — the source of pain, stiffness and a reduced range of movement. It is a wear-related, degenerative disease; swollen flare-ups can still appear.

Joints carrying the greatest load are affected most frequently — the knee (gonarthrosis), the hip (coxarthrosis), the ankle and the small hand joints. Treatment is most successful at an early or moderate stage, before the joint surfaces are badly damaged; with advanced disease the doctor will honestly say if joint replacement is the more realistic route.

Joints we treat

We treat large and small joints; the doctor picks the joint, method and injection count once your scans are reviewed

Methods we use

Cell therapy (SVF) from your own adipose tissue

Cell therapy (SVF) from your own adipose tissue

Your adipose tissue, in a small sample, is processed to isolate the stromal vascular fraction (SVF): a combination of cells that take part in tissue repair. With your own plasma added, it is injected into the joint in question.

The typical indication is early or moderate osteoarthritis: the aim is slower cartilage wear and less friction between the surfaces of the joint.

PRP — platelet-rich plasma from your own blood

PRP — platelet-rich plasma from your own blood

From a little of your blood, plasma rich in platelets and growth factors is separated and injected into the joint. It calms inflammation and gives tissue repair better conditions.

Mild osteoarthritis is a common indication; when a stronger effect is needed, it is used together with SVF.

How the procedure goes: step by step

Consultation and scan review

The doctor examines your joint, looks through your X-rays, MRI or ultrasound and decides whether the procedure is right for you. If you already have scans, you can send them ahead of the visit.

Blood sample for PRP

A small amount of venous blood is drawn, to be processed later into platelet-rich plasma with growth factors.

The doctor tells you in advance which tests are needed.

Adipose tissue sample

A puncture on the abdomen or inner thigh, under local anaesthetic, is used to take a small portion of adipose tissue (about 30 ml). No stitches afterwards.

Processing in a centrifuge

After spinning in a centrifuge, the sample forms layers. The stromal vascular fraction is isolated from them and mixed with the platelet-rich plasma.
The whole procedure is done in one day.

Injection into the joint

Ultrasound guidance allows the prepared material to be injected directly and precisely into the affected joint.

Follow-up

No crutches and no hospital stay. The doctor stays in touch after the procedure and follows how the joint responds.

Follow-up visits

After 1 month
3 months
6 months

Follow-up visits let the doctor see how the joint responds and adjust the plan — pain usually eases over the first month, mobility improves over about three months, and the full effect develops over around six months.

After the procedure

Most people return home the same day, with small dressings on the puncture sites, and resume normal daily activity within a day or two. During the first week a little more joint ache is an expected reaction. Over the first month pain usually eases, over about three months mobility and activity improve, and the full effect develops over around six months. How long it lasts depends on the person, the stage of the condition, body weight, activity and other factors; no one can promise a fixed result. A healthy weight and regular exercise that is kind to the joints help the result last longer.

Joint treatment: frequently asked questions

What Jos residents ask about osteoarthritis

Without treatment, osteoarthritis usually progresses: pain becomes constant, movement becomes limited and the joint may deform. Early diagnosis, weight control, exercise and working with a doctor make a real difference for every patient in Jos.

The right activity strengthens the muscles that unload the joint and helps cartilage nutrition. Patients from Jos are advised swimming, cycling, Nordic walking or yoga, and to avoid running on hard surfaces, jumping and heavy lifting.

How much does arthrosis treatment cost in Jos? The doctor names the price after assessing the stage from your X-ray or MRI and choosing PRP, SVF or a combination. Send a request or message us in any messenger.
