What is osteoarthritis
(arthrosis)?

Osteoarthritis — also known as arthrosis — is a chronic disease in which joint cartilage steadily wears thin. Cartilage acts as a cushion, so as it breaks down the bones begin to rub, leading to pain, stiffness and less movement. It is degenerative in nature rather than inflammatory, but flare-ups with swelling still occur.

It most often affects the joints that carry the most load — the knee (gonarthrosis) and the hip (coxarthrosis), as well as the ankle and the small joints of the hand. Treatment works best at early and moderate stages, before the joint surfaces are badly damaged; at an advanced stage the doctor will tell you honestly if joint replacement is the more realistic option.

Joints we treat

Small and large joints are treated; the doctor determines the joint, method and number of injections after looking at your scans

Methods we use

Cell therapy (SVF) from your own adipose tissue

Cell therapy (SVF) from your own adipose tissue

First a small sample of adipose tissue is processed to isolate the stromal vascular fraction (SVF) — cells involved in tissue repair. This fraction, combined with your plasma, is then injected into the affected joint.

Doctors use it chiefly in early and moderate osteoarthritis, aiming to slow cartilage wear and cut friction between the joint surfaces.

PRP — platelet-rich plasma from your own blood

PRP — platelet-rich plasma from your own blood

Platelet- and growth-factor-rich plasma is separated from a small amount of your blood and then injected into the joint, helping to calm inflammation and create better conditions for tissue repair.

It is frequently used for mild osteoarthritis, and combined with SVF when a stronger effect is required.

How the procedure goes: step by step

Consultation and scan review

Your joint is examined and your X-rays, MRI or ultrasound are reviewed; then the doctor decides if the procedure suits you. You may send any scans you have before you come.

Blood sample for PRP

We take a small amount of blood from a vein, which is later used to prepare platelet-rich plasma with growth factors.

The doctor tells you in advance which tests are needed.

Adipose tissue sample

A puncture on the abdomen or inner thigh, under local anaesthetic, is used to take a small portion of adipose tissue (about 30 ml). No stitches afterwards.

Processing in a centrifuge

Centrifugation separates the sample into layers, and the stromal vascular fraction is isolated, then combined with platelet-rich plasma.
The whole procedure is done in one day.

Injection into the joint

Using ultrasound guidance, the doctor injects the prepared material directly into the affected joint so it is placed precisely.

Follow-up

Neither a hospital stay nor crutches — and after the procedure the doctor stays in contact and follows how the joint is responding.

Follow-up visits

After 1 month
3 months
6 months

The doctor uses follow-up visits to see how the joint responds and to fine-tune the plan. Typically pain eases over the first month, movement improves over about three months and the full effect builds over around six months.

After the procedure

Going home the same day is the norm, and normal daily activity usually resumes within a day or two; small dressings cover the puncture sites. In the first week the joint may ache slightly more, which is expected. During the first month pain usually eases, over about three months mobility and activity improve, and around six months are needed for the full effect. Its duration differs from person to person, depending on the stage, body weight, activity and other factors, so no fixed result can be promised. Keeping weight healthy and exercising regularly in a joint-friendly way helps it last longer.

Joint treatment: frequently asked questions

Osteoarthritis treatment in Zaria: what you should know

Without treatment, osteoarthritis usually progresses: pain becomes constant, movement becomes limited and the joint may deform. Early diagnosis, weight control, exercise and working with a doctor make a real difference for every patient in Zaria.

PRP is often used for mild osteoarthritis, and SVF with PRP when a stronger effect is needed. The method and the number of injections are chosen for each patient in Zaria after the examination.

How much does arthrosis treatment cost in Zaria? The doctor names the price after assessing the stage from your X-ray or MRI and choosing PRP, SVF or a combination. Send a request or message us in any messenger.
