What is a tummy tuck
and who is it for?

With a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), the front abdominal wall is tightened surgically and excess stretched skin and fat are removed. It neither causes weight loss nor replaces diet and exercise. The aim is a flat abdominal contour — removing the overhanging skin-and-fat apron, repairing separated rectus muscles and, where necessary, forming a new navel.

People choose it when childbirth, a C-section or major weight loss leaves excess skin and diastasis, a separation of the rectus abdominis muscles. Diet and exercise won't fix it: stretched skin does not shrink, and separated muscles don't come together without surgery. Plan pregnancy 12 months or more later; surgery isn't done during breastfeeding.

Tummy tuck techniques at City Medical Centre

Classic tummy tuck

A classic tummy tuck opens with a horizontal incision above the pubic area, sized to the amount of excess tissue. The scar line is planned to sit under underwear and swimwear. Separated rectus muscles are repaired, excess skin and fat removed, the navel repositioned and drains placed; the surgery takes 2–4 hours under general anaesthesia.

Suitable for marked excess skin, rectus diastasis and a C-section scar.

Mini tummy tuck with diastasis repair

With a mini tummy tuck, only the lower abdomen is corrected: the incision is shorter and the navel stays in place. It addresses a narrower issue — a small amount of excess skin with diastasis or overhang above a C-section scar as the main concern — and recovery is shorter. The surgeon decides on the technique at an in-person consultation after assessing muscles and skin.

Shorter recovery and less trauma where excess skin is minor.

How the surgery goes: from consultation to result

Surgeon consultation

The surgeon discusses your wishes, carries out an examination, assesses fat deposits and excludes contraindications. City Medical Centre adds a hormone screening to help predict the long-term result.

Pre-surgery check-up

Blood tests (complete count, coagulation panel, biochemistry, infections — HIV, hepatitis, syphilis), ECG, chest X-ray and, if needed, a GP consultation.

All tests can be done at the clinic with no waiting.

Preparation

2 weeks ahead — no medicines that affect blood clotting. A week ahead — no alcohol or smoking, for quicker healing. 8 hours ahead — the final meal.

Surgery day

The surgeon meets you and marks the skin; compression garments are fitted. The operation is under general anaesthesia and takes 2–4 hours.

Waking up and monitoring

After the operation, 1–3 days in hospital under medical supervision.

Recovery

The binder is worn for 1.5–2 months. Most of the swelling settles within 30 days, and office work resumes after 2–3 weeks. The final result is evaluated at 3 months.

Recovery after a tummy tuck

Immediately after surgery the patient stays in hospital for 1–3 days, supervised by doctors. Drains are usually removed after two days, stitches after 7 days. For 1.5–2 months you wear a compression binder that supports the abdominal wall and forms a smooth contour. Most of the swelling goes within 30 days; office work is possible after 2–3 weeks. No sports, sauna or heavy lifting for 2–3 months, and in the beginning it is best to sleep on your back with knees bent. At 12 months the scar is fully mature, faded and barely noticeable.

Tummy tuck: frequently asked questions

Can a tummy tuck be combined with liposuction or diastasis repair?

Yes, combining is allowed and is very common in practice. Liposuction of the flanks and waist is added to a tummy tuck, and after childbirth — repair of rectus diastasis. Recovery with such a combination is shorter, and the surgeon will tell you at an in-person consultation how extensive the procedure will be.

Tummy tuck in Bauchi: from consultation to result

Diastasis is not always part of the picture. Repair is done only when the rectus abdominis muscles are actually separated: the surgeon sees it at the examination and, if in doubt, it is confirmed by ultrasound. When needed, the muscles are brought together during the tummy tuck itself, with no separate procedure. Patients from Bauchi learn at the consultation whether their case requires it.

Is it painful? During the procedure you feel nothing, since a tummy tuck is done under general anaesthesia. Tightness and soreness appear in the first days and are relieved with painkillers prescribed by the doctor; by the end of the first week the discomfort eases noticeably. For people from Bauchi, the first visible changes appear about two weeks after surgery, when the main swelling subsides.

A tummy tuck price is personal. It reflects how much excess skin needs removing, whether the navel is repositioned and whether separated muscles are repaired. To find out yours, book a free consultation: the surgeon examines you, answers questions about the scar, recovery and pregnancy planning and confirms the cost. Bauchi residents can apply online or through a messenger.
