What is osteoarthritis
(arthrosis)?

Osteoarthritis, also called arthrosis, is a chronic condition in which the cartilage lining a joint gradually thins and wears away. Cartilage works as a shock absorber; as it breaks down, the bones start to rub against each other, causing pain, stiffness and a smaller range of movement. It is a degenerative rather than an inflammatory disease, although flare-ups with swelling do happen.

Knees (gonarthrosis) and hips (coxarthrosis) are affected most, since they carry the greatest load, followed by the ankle and the small joints of the hand. The treatment works best early or at a moderate stage, before the joint surfaces are badly worn; in advanced cases the doctor will tell you frankly if a joint replacement is more realistic.

Joints we treat

Large or small joints: your scans come first, then the doctor decides on the joint, the method and the number of injections

Methods we use

Cell therapy (SVF) from your own adipose tissue

A little of your adipose tissue is taken and processed so that the stromal vascular fraction (SVF) can be separated: cells that help tissues repair. This is combined with your own plasma and injected into the joint affected by the disease.

At early and moderate stages of osteoarthritis it is used mainly to reduce friction between the joint surfaces and slow cartilage wear.

PRP — platelet-rich plasma from your own blood

Plasma rich in platelets and growth factors is separated from a small amount of your blood and injected into the joint. It helps calm inflammation and creates better conditions for tissue repair.

In mild osteoarthritis it is used often; to get a stronger effect it is combined with SVF.

How the procedure goes: step by step

Consultation and scan review

Your joint is examined and your X-rays, MRI or ultrasound are reviewed; then the doctor decides if the procedure suits you. You may send any scans you have before you come.

Blood sample for PRP

A small blood sample is taken from a vein, and platelet-rich plasma with growth factors is later made from it.

The doctor tells you in advance which tests are needed.

Adipose tissue sample

About 30 ml of adipose tissue is taken through a puncture in the abdomen or inner thigh, with local anaesthetic. The puncture needs no stitches.

Processing in a centrifuge

Centrifugation separates the sample into layers, and the stromal vascular fraction is isolated, then combined with platelet-rich plasma.
The whole procedure is done in one day.

Injection into the joint

Under ultrasound guidance the prepared material is injected straight into the affected joint, which helps to place it precisely.

Follow-up

There is no hospital stay and you will not need crutches. The doctor remains in contact after the procedure and follows the joint's response.

Follow-up visits

After 1 month
3 months
6 months

Follow-up visits allow the doctor to track the joint's response and adjust the plan: pain usually lessens in the first month, mobility gets better over about three months, and the full effect takes around six months.

After the procedure

Same-day discharge is typical, and most people are back to normal daily activity in a day or two; small dressings cover the puncture sites. The joint may ache a little more in week one — an expected reaction. Pain usually eases across the first month, mobility and activity improve over about three months, and the full effect develops over around six months. The duration varies from person to person and depends on the stage of the condition, body weight, activity and other factors, so a fixed result cannot be promised. Keeping a healthy weight and exercising regularly with the joint in mind helps it last.

Joint treatment: frequently asked questions

Osteoarthritis in Karol Bāgh: from X-ray to follow-up

For patients from Karol Bāgh, the aim is to keep your own joint as long as possible. The milder the stage, the faster and longer-lasting the effect usually is, and it may reduce the need for regular hyaluronic acid injections.

Follow-up visits let the doctor see how the joint responds. In Karol Bāgh, check-ups after one, three and six months help adjust the plan and decide whether a repeat course is needed.
