What is liposuction
and who is it for?

Liposuction is a surgical method of removing excess subcutaneous fat from problem areas. It is not a way to lose weight or a substitute for diet and exercise. Its goal is targeted contouring: removing saddlebags on the thighs, a sagging belly, and fat deposits on the back, flanks, arms or chin.

It is suited to people whose specific zones retain fat in spite of normal weight and regular activity. What matters most: the fat cells removed do not grow back in treated areas, so a stable lifestyle keeps the result for years.

Liposuction techniques at City Medical Centre

Tumescent (classic) liposuction

Into the treatment area goes a special saline-based solution with lidocaine, adrenaline and several other agents. It loosens fat tissue and narrows the vessels, keeping blood loss minimal and letting the fat be removed gently. The resulting emulsion is suctioned out through a thin cannula.

After the operation swelling and bruising are minimal, and recovery is far easier than after a standard procedure.

VASER liposuction (ultrasound)

Before vacuum removal, fat cells are broken down by ultrasound. The method is ideal for defining pronounced muscle relief — athletic abs — and body contouring.

It also suits delicate areas.

How the surgery goes: from consultation to result

Surgeon consultation

The doctor listens to your wishes, examines and assesses the fat deposits and rules out contraindications. At City Medical Centre a hormonal screening is also ordered — it helps predict the long-term result.

Pre-operative tests

Tests include blood work (complete count, coagulation panel, biochemistry, infections: HIV, hepatitis, syphilis), ECG and chest X-ray, with a GP consultation if needed.

All tests can be done at the clinic with no waiting.

Preparation

For faster healing, stop alcohol and smoking a week before. Stop medications that affect blood clotting 2 weeks before. Have the last meal 8 hours before.

Surgery day

The surgeon meets you, marks the areas and fits the compression garments. Local or general anesthesia is used depending on the scope.
Duration ranges from 1 hour for small areas to 3–4 hours for a combined procedure.

Waking up and monitoring

General anesthesia: a day in hospital under observation. Local anesthesia: discharge 3–4 hours after the operation.

Recovery

Compression garments stay on for 30–45 days. Once swelling subsides, first results are visible in 3–4 weeks. At 3 months, with the skin fully tightened, the final result is assessed.

Recovery after liposuction

After tumescent liposuction you recover much faster than after a conventional procedure — most patients are back at work in 3–7 days. A little swelling and a raised temperature in the first week are a normal response to surgery. Compression garments stay on for 30–45 days, fixing the new contours and speeding up tissue recovery. In the first month, avoid the bathhouse, sauna, pool and intense sport. To get the best result and recover faster, we recommend lymphatic drainage massage, pressotherapy and a gradual return to activity. Visible changes appear in 3–4 weeks and the final result at 3 months.

Liposuction: frequently asked questions

How liposuction works for Sokoto residents

The aim is not a smaller number on the scales but a better shape. Liposuction targets saddlebags, back rolls, a belly that will not flatten and fat on the arms, chin or knees. For patients from Sokoto, the result depends on one key fact: removed fat cells do not return, while the remaining ones can still grow with weight gain, so a balanced diet keeps the contour for the long term.

Here is the route in brief. Consultation and hormonal screening. Blood tests, ECG and chest X-ray at the clinic. Two weeks of preparation. Marking and compression garments on the day, then surgery under local or general anaesthesia. Observation, discharge, 30–45 days in compression and check-ups at 7 days and 3 months. Patients in Sokoto follow this same sequence.

One operation can cover several problem zones, and the price reflects that: from $1,200 (≈ ₦1,600,000) for a single area, calculated individually for combinations. The contract fixes the sum with no hidden extras, and instalments carry no interest. For patients from Sokoto, a free surgeon consultation is the place to plan scope and cost together.
