What is liposuction
and who is it for?

Liposuction is an operation to remove excess subcutaneous fat from problem zones, not a way to slim down or to skip diet and exercise. It is aimed at targeted contouring — removing saddlebags on the thighs, a sagging tummy and fat deposits on the back, flanks, arms or chin.

Liposuction suits people whose specific areas hold on to fat despite a normal weight and an active lifestyle. The key point: fat cells removed from treated areas do not grow back, so with a steady lifestyle the result lasts for a long time.

Areas we treat

Several areas can be treated in one operation — this saves recovery time and budget

Liposuction techniques at City Medical Centre

Tumescent (classic) liposuction

The treatment area is first injected with a special solution of saline, lidocaine, adrenaline and several other agents. This loosens the fat and narrows the vessels, so blood loss is minimal and removal is gentle. Next, the fat emulsion is vacuumed out through a thin cannula.

Recovery is much easier than after a conventional procedure, with almost no swelling or bruising after surgery.

VASER liposuction (ultrasound)

Ultrasound breaks down fat cells before they are removed by vacuum. It is the ideal method for bringing out muscle relief — athletic abs — and contouring the body.

It also suits delicate areas.

How the surgery goes: from consultation to result

Surgeon consultation

Your wishes are heard, then the doctor examines you, assesses fat deposits and rules out contraindications. At City Medical Centre a hormonal screening is ordered too, helping to predict the long-term result.

Pre-operative tests

Blood work — complete count, coagulation panel, biochemistry, infection tests for HIV, hepatitis and syphilis — plus ECG, chest X-ray and a GP consultation if required.

All tests can be done at the clinic with no waiting.

Preparation

Medicines that affect blood clotting — stop them 2 weeks before. Alcohol and smoking — stop a week before so you heal faster. The last meal — 8 hours before.

Surgery day

The surgeon meets you, marks the areas and fits the compression garments. Local or general anesthesia is used depending on the scope.
Duration ranges from 1 hour for small areas to 3–4 hours for a combined procedure.

Waking up and monitoring

If anesthesia is general, you stay in hospital for one day under observation. If it is local, you are discharged 3–4 hours after surgery.

Recovery

Compression garments stay on for 30–45 days. Once swelling subsides, first results are visible in 3–4 weeks. At 3–6 months, with the skin fully tightened, the final result is assessed.

Recovery after liposuction

Recovery is much shorter after tumescent liposuction than after a conventional procedure, and most patients resume work within 7–10 days. The first week may bring mild swelling and a raised temperature — a normal response to surgery. Wearing compression garments for 30–45 days fixes the new contours and speeds up tissue recovery. For one month, the bathhouse, sauna, pool and intense sport are off-limits. For the best result and faster healing, we recommend lymphatic drainage massage, pressotherapy and a gradual return to activity. You'll see first changes in 3–4 weeks and the final result in 3–6 months.
