What did Mario Götze say about his hair transplant?
In the summer of 2025 photos from Eintracht Frankfurt’s training showed the midfielder with a noticeably fuller hairline. In November 2025 Götze talked about it himself in an interview with BILD, and the sports channel SPORT1 quoted his words. “It’s no secret, I can’t hide it anymore,” he joked, adding that he had been thinking about it for a long time. The procedure was done at the end of May 2025.
He also explained the timing: “Back then it was the ideal moment because of the summer break and the fact that I was still in the rehab phase. And I thought: if not now, when?” And he was frank about his reason: “It did bother me a bit how it looked before. Now it feels good, I’m very happy with how it has developed.”
That is everything this article relies on. Götze did not name the technique, the number of grafts or other medical details, so we do not guess at them. Where the text below describes methods and timelines, it explains hair transplantation in general, not his treatment.
Why his openness matters
Götze scored the winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final, so millions of people know his face. He could have let the photos speak for themselves. Instead he gave a short, relaxed answer and named the real reason: the old hairline bothered him a little. That is exactly how most men describe their own motivation.
His answer also shows something practical: a transplant is a planned decision. He thought about it for a long time and then chose a period when he had time to recover. Surgeons give their patients the same advice — plan the date around work, sport and travel, not on impulse.
Hair loss in men is common and in most cases genetic (androgenetic alopecia). A transplant does not stop that process; it moves hair that is resistant to it from the back of the head to the areas that have thinned.

How a hair transplant works today
A modern hair transplant is an outpatient operation under local anaesthesia, and the patient goes home the same day. Follicles are taken one by one from the donor area at the back of the head and the temples and implanted where hair is missing. The main methods:
- FUE — grafts are extracted individually without incisions or stitches and placed into channels prepared by the surgeon.
- DHI — grafts are implanted with a Choi implanter pen without pre-made channels, which gives fine control over angle and direction.
- Combined DHI+FUE — FUE extraction and DHI implantation in one procedure.

Which method fits depends on the extent of hair loss and the donor area, so the choice is made at a consultation, not from a footballer’s photo.
Who is a good candidate and how to prepare
A transplant works best when the donor area is dense enough and the hair loss has a clear pattern: receding temples and hairline, a high hairline, low density or hair loss after trauma or burns. There are also contraindications, including patchy (focal) alopecia, age under 18, trichotillomania, body dysmorphic disorder, severe heart disease, diabetes mellitus, epilepsy and intolerance to anaesthetics. The doctor checks them before a date is booked.
Before surgery the patient receives a list of tests and instructions. Like Götze, it makes sense to pick a window of a few quiet weeks: helmets, tight caps, intense training and saunas are best avoided while the scalp heals, and the clinic gives a plan for returning to sport.
What results look like over time
Götze spoke about his result about five months after the procedure and said he was happy with how it had developed. That fits the usual timeline: in the first weeks the transplanted hairs shed while the follicles stay in place, new growth starts after three to four months, density becomes visible at six to nine months, and the final result is judged at 12–18 months. The timeline below shows the stages.
How hair transplant results usually develop
- Day of surgeryLocal anaesthesia, grafts are taken and implanted; you go home the same day.
- Days 0–10The scalp heals, crusts come off and swelling goes down; you follow the washing and sleeping instructions.
- Weeks 2–4Transplanted hairs shed. This is a normal stage: the follicles stay in place.
- Months 3–4New hairs start to grow and the result begins to show.
- Months 6–9Density becomes clearly visible.
- Months 12–18The final density and a natural hairline can be assessed.
A hair transplant at City Medical Centre
City Medical Centre performs FUE, DHI and combined hair transplants for international patients. The first consultation is free and can be held online: the doctor assesses photos of the hair and the donor area, counts the grafts free of charge and names the price, which is fixed in the contract with no extra charges on the day of surgery. Current prices are $2,200 for FUE, $2,500 for DHI and $2,700 for the combined method.
The price includes a lifetime guarantee of hair growth, all dressings and check-ups, and follow-up appointments at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months. More details are on the hair transplant page; you can also book the free consultation or simply write to the clinic on Telegram.
To be clear: City Medical Centre has no connection with Mario Götze or his treatment. His story is simply a well-known example of a man who talked openly about the procedure.
Hair transplant prices in this article are the current offer, valid until 31 October 2026. Regular prices: FUE $2,700, DHI $2,900, combined method $2,900. The price that applies to you is confirmed at the consultation.
