What is a tummy tuck
and who is it for?

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is surgical tightening of the front abdominal wall that removes excess stretched skin and fat. It is not a weight-loss method and does not replace diet and exercise. The goal is a flat abdominal contour: removing the overhanging skin-and-fat apron, repairing separated rectus muscles and, if needed, creating a new navel.

It is chosen if excess skin and diastasis (separation of the rectus abdominis muscles) stay after childbirth, a C-section or major weight loss. Diet and exercise cannot help: stretched skin doesn't shrink and separated muscles won't rejoin without surgery. Pregnancy is best planned 12 months or more later, and surgery is not done during breastfeeding.

Tummy tuck techniques at City Medical Centre

Classic tummy tuck

In a classic tummy tuck the surgeon makes a horizontal incision above the pubic area; the length depends on the amount of excess tissue. The scar line is planned for underwear and swimwear to hide it. Separated rectus muscles are repaired, excess skin and fat removed, the navel repositioned and drains placed, over 2–4 hours under general anaesthesia.

Suitable for marked excess skin, rectus diastasis and a C-section scar.

Mini tummy tuck with diastasis repair

In a mini tummy tuck the scope is narrower: the surgeon corrects just the lower abdomen, the incision is shorter and the navel is not repositioned. It is used for small excess skin when the main concern is diastasis or overhang above a C-section scar, and recovery is shorter. The technique is chosen at an in-person consultation, once the abdominal muscles and skin are assessed.

Minor excess skin? Less trauma and a shorter recovery.

How the surgery goes: from consultation to result

Surgeon consultation

The surgeon takes note of your wishes, examines you, evaluates fat deposits and rules out any contraindications. At City Medical Centre we also order hormone screening, which helps predict the long-term result.

Pre-surgery check-up

Blood work — complete count, coagulation panel, biochemistry and infection tests for HIV, hepatitis and syphilis — with an ECG, chest X-ray and, if required, a GP consultation.

All tests can be done at the clinic with no waiting.

Preparation

2 weeks before, stop medicines that affect blood clotting. A week before, give up alcohol and smoking to heal faster. 8 hours before, have your last meal.

Surgery day

On the day: meeting the surgeon, skin marking, fitting of compression garments. Then 2–4 hours of surgery under general anaesthesia.

Waking up and monitoring

A hospital stay of 1–3 days under medical supervision follows surgery.

Recovery

The binder is worn for 1.5–2 months. Most of the swelling settles within 30 days, and office work resumes after 2–3 weeks. The final result is evaluated at 3 months.

Recovery after a tummy tuck

Immediately after surgery the patient stays in hospital for 1–3 days, supervised by doctors. Drains are usually removed after two days, stitches after 7 days. For 1.5–2 months you wear a compression binder that supports the abdominal wall and forms a smooth contour. Most of the swelling goes within 30 days; office work is possible after 2–3 weeks. No sports, sauna or heavy lifting for 2–3 months, and in the beginning it is best to sleep on your back with knees bent. At 12 months the scar is fully mature, faded and barely noticeable.

Tummy tuck: frequently asked questions

Can a tummy tuck be done together with liposuction or diastasis repair?

Yes — this is allowed and very often done. To a tummy tuck, flank and waist liposuction is added, and after childbirth, rectus diastasis repair. Recovery is shorter with such a combination; the surgeon will describe the extent of the procedure at an in-person consultation.

About abdominoplasty for patients from Siliguri

Diastasis is not always part of the picture. Repair is done only when the rectus abdominis muscles are actually separated: the surgeon sees it at the examination and, if in doubt, it is confirmed by ultrasound. When needed, the muscles are brought together during the tummy tuck itself, with no separate procedure. Patients from Siliguri learn at the consultation whether their case requires it.

In the classic operation the surgeon makes a horizontal incision above the pubic area, its length set by the amount of excess tissue. The separated rectus muscles are repaired, excess skin and fat are removed, the navel is repositioned and drains are placed. The mini version works only on the lower abdomen through a shorter incision. Patients from Siliguri are under general anaesthesia throughout.

Nothing about the cost is hidden. The surgeon sets the price for abdominoplasty after a free in-person examination, and that amount is fixed in the contract. The surgeon stays in touch throughout recovery, and check-ups are part of the plan. For people from Siliguri, the fastest way to get an exact figure is to leave a request; a coordinator will call and book a time.
