What is a tummy tuck
and who is it for?

With a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), the front abdominal wall is tightened surgically and excess stretched skin and fat are removed. It neither causes weight loss nor replaces diet and exercise. The aim is a flat abdominal contour — removing the overhanging skin-and-fat apron, repairing separated rectus muscles and, where necessary, forming a new navel.

It is chosen when, after childbirth, a C-section or major weight loss, there is excess skin and diastasis — rectus abdominis muscles that have separated. This is not fixable by diet and exercise: stretched skin does not shrink and separated muscles need surgery to come together. Pregnancy should come 12 months or more later, and surgery is not done while breastfeeding.

Tummy tuck techniques at City Medical Centre

Classic tummy tuck

A classic tummy tuck opens with a horizontal incision above the pubic area, sized to the amount of excess tissue. The scar line is planned to sit under underwear and swimwear. Separated rectus muscles are repaired, excess skin and fat removed, the navel repositioned and drains placed; the surgery takes 2–4 hours under general anaesthesia.

Suits a C-section scar, rectus diastasis and marked excess skin.

Mini tummy tuck with diastasis repair

In a mini tummy tuck the scope is narrower: the surgeon corrects just the lower abdomen, the incision is shorter and the navel is not repositioned. It is used for small excess skin when the main concern is diastasis or overhang above a C-section scar, and recovery is shorter. The technique is chosen at an in-person consultation, once the abdominal muscles and skin are assessed.

Shorter recovery and less trauma where excess skin is minor.

How the surgery goes: from consultation to result

Surgeon consultation

The surgeon discusses your wishes, carries out an examination, assesses fat deposits and excludes contraindications. City Medical Centre adds a hormone screening to help predict the long-term result.

Pre-surgery check-up

Blood tests (complete count, coagulation panel, biochemistry, infections — HIV, hepatitis, syphilis), ECG, chest X-ray and, if needed, a GP consultation.

All tests can be done at the clinic with no waiting.

Preparation

Stop blood-clotting medicines 2 weeks before; stop alcohol and smoking a week before for faster healing; eat the last meal 8 hours before.

Surgery day

The surgeon meets you and marks the skin; compression garments are fitted. The operation is under general anaesthesia and takes 2–4 hours.

Waking up and monitoring

The patient remains in hospital under medical supervision for 1–3 days after surgery.

Recovery

A compression binder for 1.5–2 months; most swelling disappears within 30 days; office work after 2–3 weeks; final result assessed at 3 months.

Recovery after a tummy tuck

For 1–3 days right after surgery the patient stays in hospital under medical supervision. Drains are usually removed after two days, stitches after 7 days. You wear a compression binder for 1.5–2 months; it supports the abdominal wall and shapes a smooth contour. Office work resumes after 2–3 weeks, and most swelling goes within 30 days. Sports, sauna and heavy lifting are off-limits for 2–3 months, and at first sleeping on your back with knees bent is advised. By 12 months the scar is fully mature and fades to barely noticeable.

Tummy tuck: frequently asked questions

Can a tummy tuck be done together with liposuction or diastasis repair?

Yes, combining is permitted and very widespread. A tummy tuck is often done with flank and waist liposuction, and after childbirth with repair of rectus diastasis. Recovery is shorter with this combination; the scope of the procedure is explained by the surgeon at an in-person consultation.

Tummy tuck in Shivaji Nagar: techniques, stages and recovery

Who is a candidate? Adults aged 18 and over with no contraindications; there is no upper age limit, and each case is considered after an examination. Surgery is done at a stable weight and is not performed during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Contraindications also include decompensated diabetes, blood clotting disorders, cancer and serious heart, kidney or liver disease. Shivaji Nagar patients get a personal assessment.

The result comes in stages. First changes show about two weeks after surgery, an interim result is visible at 1.5–2 months and the final contours form at 3–6 months. The scar keeps maturing for up to a year before it fades. Check-ups take place at 7 days, 3 months and 6 months, and until the end of the year a post-surgery consultation for patients from Shivaji Nagar is at the clinic's expense.

A tummy tuck price is personal. It reflects how much excess skin needs removing, whether the navel is repositioned and whether separated muscles are repaired. To find out yours, book a free consultation: the surgeon examines you, answers questions about the scar, recovery and pregnancy planning and confirms the cost. Shivaji Nagar residents can apply online or through a messenger.
