What is a tummy tuck
and who is it for?

With a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), the front abdominal wall is tightened surgically and excess stretched skin and fat are removed. It neither causes weight loss nor replaces diet and exercise. The aim is a flat abdominal contour — removing the overhanging skin-and-fat apron, repairing separated rectus muscles and, where necessary, forming a new navel.

After childbirth, a C-section or major weight loss, excess skin and diastasis — separated rectus abdominis muscles — may remain, and that is when it is chosen. Diet and exercise can't solve this: stretched skin won't shrink and separated muscles won't rejoin without surgery. Pregnancy should be planned 12 months or more later; no surgery while breastfeeding.

Tummy tuck techniques at City Medical Centre

Classic tummy tuck

First comes a horizontal incision above the pubic area, whose length depends on how much excess tissue there is. The scar line is planned so that underwear and swimwear hide it. Then the surgeon repairs separated rectus muscles, removes excess skin and fat, repositions the navel and places drains. The classic operation takes 2–4 hours under general anaesthesia.

A good fit for marked excess skin, rectus diastasis and a C-section scar.

Mini tummy tuck with diastasis repair

A mini tummy tuck is for a narrower issue — only the lower abdomen is corrected, through a shorter incision, and the navel is not moved. It is used with a small amount of excess skin where the key concern is diastasis or overhang above a C-section scar; recovery is then shorter. The surgeon selects the technique at an in-person consultation after assessing the abdominal muscles and skin.

Lower trauma and quicker recovery for minor excess skin.

How the surgery goes: from consultation to result

Surgeon consultation

The surgeon listens to your wishes and examines you, assessing fat deposits and ruling out contraindications. City Medical Centre also prescribes a hormone screening that helps predict the long-term result.

Pre-surgery check-up

Tests: blood (complete count, coagulation panel, biochemistry, infections: HIV, hepatitis, syphilis), ECG and chest X-ray; a GP consultation if needed.

All tests can be done at the clinic with no waiting.

Preparation

2 weeks ahead — no medicines that affect blood clotting. A week ahead — no alcohol or smoking, for quicker healing. 8 hours ahead — the final meal.

Surgery day

Consultation with the surgeon, skin marking and compression garment fitting. Surgery under general anaesthesia takes 2–4 hours.

Waking up and monitoring

For 1–3 days after surgery the patient stays in hospital, under medical supervision.

Recovery

Compression binder: 1.5–2 months. Swelling: mostly gone within 30 days. Office work: after 2–3 weeks. Final result: assessed at 6–12 months.

Recovery after a tummy tuck

Following surgery, the patient stays 1–3 days in hospital under medical supervision. Drains usually come out after two days, and stitches after 7 days. For 1.5–2 months a compression binder supports the abdominal wall and shapes a smooth contour. Within 30 days most swelling goes, and office work is possible after 2–3 weeks. Sports, sauna and heavy lifting are not allowed for 2–3 months; in the early days, sleep on your back with your knees bent. By 12 months the scar is fully mature: faded and barely noticeable.

Tummy tuck: frequently asked questions

Can a tummy tuck be done together with liposuction or diastasis repair?

Yes, it is allowed and happens very often. A tummy tuck is combined with liposuction of the flanks and waist and, after childbirth, with repair of rectus diastasis. With this combination recovery is shorter; the surgeon explains the extent of the procedure at an in-person consultation.

Tummy tuck in Rabat step by step

Diastasis is not always part of the picture. Repair is done only when the rectus abdominis muscles are actually separated: the surgeon sees it at the examination and, if in doubt, it is confirmed by ultrasound. When needed, the muscles are brought together during the tummy tuck itself, with no separate procedure. Patients from Rabat learn at the consultation whether their case requires it.

Here is the route in brief. Consultation and hormone screening. Tests: blood and urine, coagulation, biochemistry, infections, ECG, chest X-ray, leg vein ultrasound and a GP's report. Surgery lasting 2–4 hours. One to three days in hospital. A compression binder, then check-ups at 7 days, 3 months and 6 months. Patients in Rabat follow this same sequence from start to finish.

How much is a tummy tuck in Rabat? The answer comes at a free consultation: the surgeon examines the abdominal muscles and skin, chooses a classic or mini technique and decides whether diastasis repair or liposuction should be added. Only then is the price calculated and written into the contract. Send a request or message us in any messenger to get started.
