What is a tummy tuck
and who is it for?

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is surgical tightening of the front abdominal wall that removes excess stretched skin and fat. It is not a weight-loss method and does not replace diet and exercise. The goal is a flat abdominal contour: removing the overhanging skin-and-fat apron, repairing separated rectus muscles and, if needed, creating a new navel.

This surgery is chosen for excess skin and diastasis — separation of the rectus abdominis muscles — left after childbirth, a C-section or major weight loss. Diet and exercise can't correct it: stretched skin doesn't shrink and separated muscles don't rejoin without surgery. Pregnancy should be 12 months or more later, and there is no surgery while breastfeeding.

Tummy tuck techniques at City Medical Centre

Classic tummy tuck

A classic tummy tuck opens with a horizontal incision above the pubic area, sized to the amount of excess tissue. The scar line is planned to sit under underwear and swimwear. Separated rectus muscles are repaired, excess skin and fat removed, the navel repositioned and drains placed; the surgery takes 2–4 hours under general anaesthesia.

Suits a C-section scar, rectus diastasis and marked excess skin.

Mini tummy tuck with diastasis repair

A mini tummy tuck covers a narrower issue: correction of the lower abdomen only, a shorter incision and no moving of the navel. It suits a small amount of excess skin when diastasis or overhang above a C-section scar is the main concern; recovery is shorter in this case. The surgeon chooses the technique at an in-person consultation after assessing the abdominal muscles and skin.

Less trauma and a shorter recovery when the excess skin is minor.

How the surgery goes: from consultation to result

Surgeon consultation

At the visit the surgeon listens to your goals, examines you, assesses the fat deposits and checks for contraindications. A hormone screening is also ordered at City Medical Centre, helping to predict the long-term result.

Pre-surgery check-up

Blood tests for complete count, coagulation, biochemistry and infections (HIV, hepatitis, syphilis), an ECG, a chest X-ray and a GP consultation if needed.

All tests can be done at the clinic with no waiting.

Preparation

2 weeks before, stop medicines that affect blood clotting. A week before, give up alcohol and smoking to heal faster. 8 hours before, have your last meal.

Surgery day

Skin marking, compression garment fitting and a meeting with the surgeon. The surgery lasts 2–4 hours and is done under general anaesthesia.

Waking up and monitoring

After surgery the patient spends 1–3 days in hospital, with doctors supervising.

Recovery

The binder is worn for 1.5–2 months. Most of the swelling settles within 30 days, and office work resumes after 2–3 weeks. The final result is evaluated at 3 months.

Recovery after a tummy tuck

The patient stays in hospital under medical supervision for 1–3 days right after surgery. Usually drains are removed after two days and stitches after 7 days. Wearing a compression binder for 1.5–2 months supports the abdominal wall and gives a smooth contour. Most swelling is gone within 30 days, with office work resuming after 2–3 weeks. For 2–3 months avoid sports, sauna and heavy lifting; at first, sleeping on your back with knees bent is recommended. By 12 months the scar is fully mature, faded and barely noticeable.

Tummy tuck: frequently asked questions

Tummy tuck with liposuction or diastasis repair — can they be combined?

Yes, it is allowed and happens very often. A tummy tuck is combined with liposuction of the flanks and waist and, after childbirth, with repair of rectus diastasis. With this combination recovery is shorter; the surgeon explains the extent of the procedure at an in-person consultation.

What Port Elizabeth residents ask about a tummy tuck

Who is a candidate? Adults aged 18 and over with no contraindications; there is no upper age limit, and each case is considered after an examination. Surgery is done at a stable weight and is not performed during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Contraindications also include decompensated diabetes, blood clotting disorders, cancer and serious heart, kidney or liver disease. Port Elizabeth patients get a personal assessment.

Pre-surgery tests should be completed in advance, not the day before. The surgeon gives the exact list at the consultation, and results are usually valid for 10–14 days. Seven to ten days before the operation, stop smoking, alcohol and medicines that affect blood clotting. Anyone in Port Elizabeth preparing for a tummy tuck also sees a GP and an anaesthetist before the surgery date.

Combining procedures can make the plan more efficient: a tummy tuck with flank and waist liposuction or diastasis repair is done under one anaesthesia with one recovery period. The price for such a combination, as for a standalone operation, is set after a free consultation and fixed in the contract. People in Port Elizabeth can book that consultation through the form or any messenger.
