What is a tummy tuck
and who is it for?

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) means surgically tightening the front abdominal wall and removing excess stretched skin and fat. It is no way to lose weight and cannot replace diet and exercise. It aims for a flat abdominal contour by removing the overhanging skin-and-fat apron, repairing separated rectus muscles and, when needed, making a new navel.

Excess skin and diastasis — separated rectus abdominis muscles — that remain after childbirth, a C-section or major weight loss are the reason to choose it. Diet and exercise won't correct this: stretched skin doesn't shrink, and separated muscles don't come back together without surgery. Pregnancy should be planned 12 months or more ahead; no surgery while breastfeeding.

Tummy tuck techniques at City Medical Centre

Classic tummy tuck

The classic operation starts with a horizontal incision above the pubic area; its length depends on the amount of excess tissue. The scar line is planned so underwear and swimwear hide it. The surgeon repairs separated rectus muscles, removes excess skin and fat, repositions the navel and places drains; it takes 2–4 hours under general anaesthesia.

Suits significant excess skin, rectus diastasis and a C-section scar.

Mini tummy tuck with diastasis repair

A mini tummy tuck handles a narrower problem, correcting only the lower abdomen; the incision is shorter and the navel is not moved. It is for a small amount of excess skin, when diastasis or overhang above a C-section scar is the main concern, with a shorter recovery. The technique is chosen by the surgeon in person, after assessing the abdominal muscles and skin.

Less surgical trauma and a faster recovery if the excess skin is minor.

How the surgery goes: from consultation to result

Surgeon consultation

Your wishes are heard first; then the surgeon examines you, assesses fat deposits and excludes contraindications. City Medical Centre orders a hormone screening too, to help predict the long-term result.

Pre-surgery check-up

Tests: blood (complete count, coagulation panel, biochemistry, infections: HIV, hepatitis, syphilis), ECG and chest X-ray; a GP consultation if needed.

All tests can be done at the clinic with no waiting.

Preparation

Medicines affecting clotting stop 2 weeks before, alcohol and smoking stop a week before for faster healing, and the last meal is 8 hours before.

Surgery day

Meeting your surgeon, marking the skin and fitting compression garments. General anaesthesia is used, and the surgery takes 2–4 hours.

Waking up and monitoring

A hospital stay of 1–3 days under medical supervision follows surgery.

Recovery

The binder is worn for 1.5–2 months. Most of the swelling settles within 30 days, and office work resumes after 2–3 weeks. The final result is evaluated at 3 months.

Recovery after a tummy tuck

The patient remains in hospital under medical supervision for 1–3 days right after surgery. Drains are usually taken out after two days and stitches after 7 days. A compression binder, worn for 1.5–2 months, supports the abdominal wall and shapes a smooth contour. Within 30 days most swelling goes; after 2–3 weeks you can return to office work. Sports, sauna and heavy lifting are not allowed for 2–3 months, and sleeping on your back with knees bent is recommended at first. By 12 months the scar has matured fully: it fades and is hardly visible.

Tummy tuck: frequently asked questions

Can a tummy tuck be done together with liposuction or diastasis repair?

Yes, you can combine them, and in practice it is very common. Liposuction of the flanks and waist is added to the tummy tuck, and after childbirth, rectus diastasis repair. Such a combination shortens recovery, and the surgeon will explain at an in-person consultation how extensive the procedure will be.

Tummy tuck in Jaipur: from consultation to result

Diastasis is not always part of the picture. Repair is done only when the rectus abdominis muscles are actually separated: the surgeon sees it at the examination and, if in doubt, it is confirmed by ultrasound. When needed, the muscles are brought together during the tummy tuck itself, with no separate procedure. Patients from Jaipur learn at the consultation whether their case requires it.

The result comes in stages. First changes show about two weeks after surgery, an interim result is visible at 1.5–2 months and the final contours form at 3–6 months. The scar keeps maturing for up to a year before it fades. Check-ups take place at 7 days, 3 months and 6 months, and until the end of the year a post-surgery consultation for patients from Jaipur is at the clinic's expense.

There is no single price for abdominoplasty, since a mini tummy tuck and a classic operation with diastasis repair differ in scope. What stays constant is the approach: the surgeon names the cost after an in-person examination, and it is fixed in the contract without surprises. Jaipur residents can apply before the end of the year and get the consultation at the clinic's expense.
