What is a tummy tuck
and who is it for?

In a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) the surgeon tightens the front abdominal wall and removes stretched excess skin and fat. It does not replace diet and exercise and is not for weight loss. What it gives is a flat abdominal contour: no overhanging skin-and-fat apron, repaired separated rectus muscles and, if needed, a new navel.

After childbirth, a C-section or major weight loss, excess skin and diastasis — separated rectus abdominis muscles — may remain, and that is when it is chosen. Diet and exercise can't solve this: stretched skin won't shrink and separated muscles won't rejoin without surgery. Pregnancy should be planned 12 months or more later; no surgery while breastfeeding.

Tummy tuck techniques at City Medical Centre

Classic tummy tuck

The classic procedure starts with a horizontal incision above the pubic area; the amount of excess tissue decides its length. The scar line is designed to be covered by underwear and swimwear. The surgeon brings separated rectus muscles together, removes excess skin and fat, repositions the navel and places drains over 2–4 hours under general anaesthesia.

Suitable for marked excess skin, diastasis and a C-section scar.

Mini tummy tuck with diastasis repair

The mini tummy tuck targets a narrower issue — correcting only the lower abdomen through a shorter incision, without moving the navel. It is used when excess skin is small and the main concern is diastasis or overhang above a C-section scar; recovery is then shorter. After assessing the abdominal muscles and skin at an in-person consultation, the surgeon chooses the technique.

Lower trauma and quicker recovery for minor excess skin.

How the surgery goes: from consultation to result

Surgeon consultation

We listen to your wishes: the surgeon examines you, assesses the fat deposits and rules out contraindications. City Medical Centre also orders hormone screening that helps predict the long-term result.

Pre-surgery check-up

Blood tests (full blood count, coagulation panel, biochemistry, infections — HIV, hepatitis, syphilis), an ECG, chest X-ray and a GP consultation if needed.

All tests can be done at the clinic with no waiting.

Preparation

For faster healing, no alcohol or smoking for a week before. Medicines affecting blood clotting are stopped 2 weeks before. The last meal — 8 hours before.

Surgery day

Meeting the surgeon, marking the skin, fitting compression garments. The surgery takes 2–4 hours, with general anaesthesia.

Waking up and monitoring

The patient is kept in hospital under medical supervision for 1–3 days after surgery.

Recovery

1.5–2 months in a compression binder. Most of the swelling is gone within 30 days; you can return to office work after 2–3 weeks. The final result is assessed at 3 months.

Recovery after a tummy tuck

Following surgery, the patient stays 1–3 days in hospital under medical supervision. Drains usually come out after two days, and stitches after 7 days. For 1.5–2 months a compression binder supports the abdominal wall and shapes a smooth contour. Within 30 days most swelling goes, and office work is possible after 2–3 weeks. Sports, sauna and heavy lifting are not allowed for 2–3 months; in the early days, sleep on your back with your knees bent. By 12 months the scar is fully mature: faded and barely noticeable.

Tummy tuck: frequently asked questions

Is a tummy tuck combinable with liposuction or diastasis repair?

Yes, combining is allowed and very common in practice. Flank and waist liposuction is added to a tummy tuck, and after childbirth rectus diastasis repair. Recovery with such a combination is shorter, and at an in-person consultation the surgeon will tell you how extensive the procedure will be.

Classic or mini tummy tuck in Gothenburg

Two techniques are available. The classic tummy tuck uses a horizontal incision above the pubic area, repairs the muscles, removes excess tissue and repositions the navel; it suits marked excess skin and a C-section scar. The mini tummy tuck corrects only the lower abdomen through a shorter incision without moving the navel. For each patient from Gothenburg, the surgeon chooses in person.

Recovery has three milestones. Office work is possible after 2–3 weeks, swelling and tightness pass by 1.5–2 months, and the final result and scar are assessed at 6–12 months once tissues have adapted. Most swelling goes within 30 days. Sport, sauna and heavy lifting wait 2–3 months, and sleeping on your back with knees bent is advised at first. The same timeline applies to Gothenburg patients.

Budget planning starts with a conversation, not a price list. At the free consultation the surgeon explains what your case requires and gives a figure that does not change later: it goes into the contract with no hidden charges. The clinic has 400+ successful surgeries and 10 years of abdominal surgery experience. Patients from Gothenburg simply leave a phone number to begin.
