What is a tummy tuck
and who is it for?

Abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, is surgery that tightens the front abdominal wall by removing surplus stretched skin and fat. It won't make you lose weight and is no substitute for diet and exercise. Its goal is a flat contour of the abdomen — removing the overhanging skin-and-fat apron, repairing separated rectus muscles and creating a new navel where needed.

Patients choose it when excess skin and diastasis, the separation of the rectus abdominis muscles, persist after childbirth, a C-section or major weight loss. Diet and exercise don't help: stretched skin does not shrink, and separated muscles do not reunite without surgery. Plan pregnancy at least 12 months later; surgery is not done while breastfeeding.

Tummy tuck techniques at City Medical Centre

Classic tummy tuck

The classic procedure starts with a horizontal incision above the pubic area; the amount of excess tissue decides its length. The scar line is designed to be covered by underwear and swimwear. The surgeon brings separated rectus muscles together, removes excess skin and fat, repositions the navel and places drains over 2–4 hours under general anaesthesia.

A good fit for marked excess skin, rectus diastasis and a C-section scar.

Mini tummy tuck with diastasis repair

A mini tummy tuck deals with a narrower problem: only the lower abdomen is corrected, the incision is shorter and the navel is not moved. It is used for a small amount of excess skin when the main concern is diastasis or overhang above a C-section scar; recovery is shorter. The surgeon chooses the technique at an in-person consultation after assessing the abdominal muscles and skin.

Less traumatic, with shorter recovery, when excess skin is minor.

How the surgery goes: from consultation to result

Surgeon consultation

The surgeon discusses your wishes, carries out an examination, assesses fat deposits and excludes contraindications. City Medical Centre adds a hormone screening to help predict the long-term result.

Pre-surgery check-up

Blood work — complete count, coagulation panel, biochemistry and infection tests for HIV, hepatitis and syphilis — with an ECG, chest X-ray and, if required, a GP consultation.

All tests can be done at the clinic with no waiting.

Preparation

2 weeks before: blood-clotting medicines are stopped. A week before: alcohol and smoking are off, to heal faster. 8 hours before: the last meal.

Surgery day

Meeting the surgeon, skin marking and fitting of compression garments. The surgery is under general anaesthesia and lasts 2–4 hours.

Waking up and monitoring

After surgery the patient spends 1–3 days in hospital, with doctors supervising.

Recovery

Compression binder: 1.5–2 months. Swelling: mostly gone within 30 days. Office work: after 2–3 weeks. Final result: assessed at 3 months.

Recovery after a tummy tuck

For 1–3 days right after surgery the patient stays in hospital under medical supervision. Drains are usually removed after two days, stitches after 7 days. You wear a compression binder for 1.5–2 months; it supports the abdominal wall and shapes a smooth contour. Office work resumes after 2–3 weeks, and most swelling goes within 30 days. Sports, sauna and heavy lifting are off-limits for 2–3 months, and at first sleeping on your back with knees bent is advised. By 12 months the scar is fully mature and fades to barely noticeable.

Tummy tuck: frequently asked questions

Can you combine a tummy tuck and liposuction or diastasis repair?

Yes, it is allowed and very common. Surgeons add liposuction of the flanks and waist to a tummy tuck, and after childbirth also repair rectus diastasis. The combination means a shorter recovery, and at an in-person consultation the surgeon tells you how extensive the procedure will be.

How a tummy tuck works for Delhi residents

Diastasis is not always part of the picture. Repair is done only when the rectus abdominis muscles are actually separated: the surgeon sees it at the examination and, if in doubt, it is confirmed by ultrasound. When needed, the muscles are brought together during the tummy tuck itself, with no separate procedure. Patients from Delhi learn at the consultation whether their case requires it.

In the classic operation the surgeon makes a horizontal incision above the pubic area, its length set by the amount of excess tissue. The separated rectus muscles are repaired, excess skin and fat are removed, the navel is repositioned and drains are placed. The mini version works only on the lower abdomen through a shorter incision. Patients from Delhi are under general anaesthesia throughout.

Nothing about the cost is hidden. The surgeon sets the price for abdominoplasty after a free in-person examination, and that amount is fixed in the contract. The surgeon stays in touch throughout recovery, and check-ups are part of the plan. For people from Delhi, the fastest way to get an exact figure is to leave a request; a coordinator will call and book a time.
