What is a tummy tuck
and who is it for?

In a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) the surgeon tightens the front abdominal wall and removes stretched excess skin and fat. It does not replace diet and exercise and is not for weight loss. What it gives is a flat abdominal contour: no overhanging skin-and-fat apron, repaired separated rectus muscles and, if needed, a new navel.

After childbirth, a C-section or major weight loss, excess skin and diastasis — separated rectus abdominis muscles — may remain, and that is when it is chosen. Diet and exercise can't solve this: stretched skin won't shrink and separated muscles won't rejoin without surgery. Pregnancy should be planned 12 months or more later; no surgery while breastfeeding.

Tummy tuck techniques at City Medical Centre

Classic tummy tuck

The classic operation begins with a horizontal cut above the pubic area, its length depending on the excess tissue. The scar line is placed so that underwear and swimwear cover it. The surgeon repairs separated rectus muscles, removes excess skin and fat, repositions the navel and places drains; it lasts 2–4 hours under general anaesthesia.

For marked excess skin, rectus diastasis and a C-section scar.

Mini tummy tuck with diastasis repair

In a mini tummy tuck the scope is narrower: the surgeon corrects just the lower abdomen, the incision is shorter and the navel is not repositioned. It is used for small excess skin when the main concern is diastasis or overhang above a C-section scar, and recovery is shorter. The technique is chosen at an in-person consultation, once the abdominal muscles and skin are assessed.

Less traumatic, with shorter recovery, when excess skin is minor.

How the surgery goes: from consultation to result

Surgeon consultation

The surgeon discusses your wishes, carries out an examination, assesses fat deposits and excludes contraindications. City Medical Centre adds a hormone screening to help predict the long-term result.

Pre-surgery check-up

Blood tests for complete count, coagulation, biochemistry and infections (HIV, hepatitis, syphilis), an ECG, a chest X-ray and a GP consultation if needed.

All tests can be done at the clinic with no waiting.

Preparation

2 weeks before, medicines affecting blood clotting are stopped. A week before — no alcohol or smoking, for faster healing. 8 hours before — the last meal.

Surgery day

You meet the surgeon, the skin is marked and compression garments are fitted. The surgery is done under general anaesthesia and lasts 2–4 hours.

Waking up and monitoring

Medical supervision in hospital continues for 1–3 days after the surgery.

Recovery

A compression binder for 1.5–2 months; most swelling disappears within 30 days; office work after 2–3 weeks; final result assessed at 6–12 months.

Recovery after a tummy tuck

For 1–3 days right after surgery the patient stays in hospital under medical supervision. Drains are usually removed after two days, stitches after 7 days. You wear a compression binder for 1.5–2 months; it supports the abdominal wall and shapes a smooth contour. Office work resumes after 2–3 weeks, and most swelling goes within 30 days. Sports, sauna and heavy lifting are off-limits for 2–3 months, and at first sleeping on your back with knees bent is advised. By 12 months the scar is fully mature and fades to barely noticeable.

Tummy tuck: frequently asked questions

Can a tummy tuck be combined with liposuction or diastasis repair?

Yes, combining is allowed and very common in practice. Flank and waist liposuction is added to a tummy tuck, and after childbirth rectus diastasis repair. Recovery with such a combination is shorter, and at an in-person consultation the surgeon will tell you how extensive the procedure will be.

About abdominoplasty for patients from Damascus

Timing matters with abdominoplasty. Because pregnancy stretches the repaired muscles again, surgeons advise having it once your family is complete and planning a pregnancy no earlier than a year afterwards. It is also done only at a stable weight: if yours is still changing, a dietitian or endocrinologist comes first. Women in Damascus thinking about the procedure after childbirth should keep this order in mind.

It all begins with a surgeon consultation: the doctor listens to your wishes, examines the abdomen and rules out contraindications, and a hormone screening is ordered to help predict the long-term result. Patients from Damascus then complete a check-up: blood tests including a coagulation panel, biochemistry and infections, ECG and chest X-ray, all available at the clinic with no waiting.

Start with a free consultation for a tummy tuck in Damascus. The surgeon assesses your abdomen, explains the difference between the classic and mini techniques for your case and gives the final price, which is then recorded in the contract. Apply before the end of the year and the consultation is at the clinic's expense. Write to us in any messenger or use the form on the page.
