Mammoplasty refers to several procedures: augmentation (adding volume through implants), reduction (cutting away excess tissue and skin), mastopexy (lifting sagging breasts), reconstruction (after mastectomy) and asymmetry correction. Complications are rare when recommendations are fully followed, yet they can include hematoma or seroma, wound infection, reduced or increased nipple sensitivity, capsular contracture, aesthetic asymmetry, separation of the wound and tissue necrosis.

Nipple and breast sensitivity can change temporarily after mammoplasty, either decreasing or increasing. It happens because nerve endings are irritated. Sensitivity usually returns within 3–12 months. If there is still no improvement after a year, consult your surgeon.

Hormonal medications (contraceptives, hormone replacement therapy) do not act on implants directly, yet they may lead to swelling or shifts in breast tissue volume that affect the look for a while. Make sure your surgeon knows about them before surgery.
