I've had the fat on my stomach and the so-called love handles suctioned ... I was incredibly afraid of the pain before the operation.
What did Jim Lyngvild say about his liposuction?
At the end of August 2024 the Danish designer and TV personality Jim Lyngvild announced on Facebook that he was on his way to a liposuction, and the next day, after being discharged, he described the operation in an interview with SE og HØR. The magazine had covered his Facebook post the day before in a separate article, where he also made a point of saying that this was not a sponsored deal: “Don't worry, we're paying ourselves.”
He explained exactly what was done and why: “I've had the fat on my stomach and what are called love handles suctioned.” And: “I've always had a little belly and love handles that I can't get rid of, no matter how much I train. So now I've had it fixed! And my stomach is completely flat now. That's my dream.”
He was frank about his fear beforehand: “I would say I was incredibly afraid of the pain before I had the operation.” According to him, everyone in the operating room was kind and professional, and when he woke up he felt a little pain that passed quickly once he took painkillers. He said he would now wear a bandage for six weeks “so my tissue can attach to the muscles again”. SE og HØR reported that the operation was done under general anaesthesia and that a close friend had the same procedure on the same day.
That is everything we rely on. Where techniques, timelines and prices are described below, they refer to liposuction in general and to City Medical Centre, not to his treatment.
What his words tell us
Lyngvild's description matches what surgeons tell patients about who liposuction is really for. It is not a weight-loss method. It is meant for local fat deposits that stay in place despite training and a stable weight — exactly the “little belly and love handles” he described. Fat cells removed from a treated area do not come back, so with a steady lifestyle the new contour lasts.
His fear of pain is also worth taking seriously, because it is the most common worry before the operation. Modern anaesthesia and pain relief make the first days manageable for most people, but liposuction is still a surgical procedure with a recovery period: compression garments for several weeks, swelling that takes time to settle, and a final result that is judged months later rather than on the day of discharge. Planning for that recovery is part of the decision.

How liposuction works today
Liposuction removes excess subcutaneous fat from areas that resist diet and exercise: the abdomen, flanks, thighs, back, arms or chin. The techniques used at City Medical Centre are:
- Tumescent liposuction — a solution based on saline with lidocaine and adrenaline is injected into the area first. It loosens the fat and constricts the vessels, which reduces blood loss; the fat is then removed through a thin cannula.
- VASER (ultrasound-assisted) liposuction — fat cells are broken down by ultrasound before being removed, which suits fine contouring, for example defining the abdominal muscles.
How the fat is prepared

Typical use

- Classic contouring of one or several areas

- Detailed contouring and muscle definition
Anaesthesia

An operation lasts from about one hour for small areas to three or four hours for a combined procedure. Several areas — for example the abdomen and the flanks together — can be treated in one session, which saves recovery time.
Who is it for and how to prepare
Liposuction suits people with local fat deposits that stay despite a normal weight and an active lifestyle, uneven fat distribution, or changed body contours after childbirth or weight loss. It is not suitable with severe chronic or mental illness or serious heart, kidney or liver disease; acute infections and skin inflammation in the area are temporary contraindications.
Before surgery patients have blood tests, an ECG and a chest X-ray; at City Medical Centre a hormonal screening is also ordered. Medications that affect blood clotting are stopped two weeks before (only with the doctor's approval), alcohol and smoking a week before, and the last meal is eight hours before the operation.
What recovery looks like
With local anaesthesia patients usually go home three to four hours after surgery; with general anaesthesia they stay one day under observation. Mild swelling and a raised temperature are possible in the first days. Most patients return to their usual routine and work within 7–10 days. Compression garments are worn for 30–45 days, and sauna, pool and intense sport are off-limits for the first month.
First visible changes appear after a few weeks as the swelling subsides, and the final result forms in three to six months, once the tissues fully adapt. The timeline below shows the usual stages.
How recovery after liposuction usually goes
- Day of surgeryLocal or general anaesthesia; from one hour for small areas to three or four hours for combined procedures.
- Same day or day 1Home three to four hours after local anaesthesia, or after one day of observation after general anaesthesia.
- Days 1–10Mild swelling is possible; most patients return to work within 7–10 days.
- Weeks 1–6Compression garments for 30–45 days; no sauna, pool or intense sport in the first month.
- Weeks 3–4First visible changes as the swelling subsides.
- Months 3–6The tissues adapt and the final result can be assessed.
