What is a tummy tuck
and who is it for?

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) means surgically tightening the front abdominal wall and removing excess stretched skin and fat. It is no way to lose weight and cannot replace diet and exercise. It aims for a flat abdominal contour by removing the overhanging skin-and-fat apron, repairing separated rectus muscles and, when needed, making a new navel.

People choose it when childbirth, a C-section or major weight loss leaves excess skin and diastasis, a separation of the rectus abdominis muscles. Diet and exercise won't fix it: stretched skin does not shrink, and separated muscles don't come together without surgery. Plan pregnancy 12 months or more later; surgery isn't done during breastfeeding.

Tummy tuck techniques at City Medical Centre

Classic tummy tuck

In the classic operation, a horizontal incision is made above the pubic area, with its length set by the amount of excess tissue. The scar line is planned to be hidden by underwear and swimwear. Separated rectus muscles are repaired, excess skin and fat removed, the navel repositioned and drains placed — 2–4 hours under general anaesthesia.

Indicated for marked excess skin, rectus diastasis and a C-section scar.

Mini tummy tuck with diastasis repair

With a mini tummy tuck, only the lower abdomen is corrected: the incision is shorter and the navel stays in place. It addresses a narrower issue — a small amount of excess skin with diastasis or overhang above a C-section scar as the main concern — and recovery is shorter. The surgeon decides on the technique at an in-person consultation after assessing muscles and skin.

Less trauma, shorter recovery — for cases with minor excess skin.

How the surgery goes: from consultation to result

Surgeon consultation

We listen to your wishes: the surgeon examines you, assesses the fat deposits and rules out contraindications. City Medical Centre also orders hormone screening that helps predict the long-term result.

Pre-surgery check-up

A chest X-ray, an ECG and blood tests (complete count, coagulation panel, biochemistry, infections — HIV, hepatitis, syphilis), plus a GP consultation if needed.

All tests can be done at the clinic with no waiting.

Preparation

Medicines affecting blood clotting are stopped 2 weeks before. A week before, no alcohol or smoking, so healing is faster. The last meal is 8 hours before.

Surgery day

Consultation with the surgeon, skin marking and compression garment fitting. Surgery under general anaesthesia takes 2–4 hours.

Waking up and monitoring

For 1–3 days after surgery the patient stays in hospital, under medical supervision.

Recovery

Compression binder — 1.5–2 months. Most swelling goes within 30 days; office work resumes after 2–3 weeks. The final result is assessed at 3 months.

Recovery after a tummy tuck

After surgery comes a 1–3 day hospital stay under medical supervision. Drains usually come out after two days, and stitches are removed after 7 days. The compression binder is worn for 1.5–2 months — it supports the abdominal wall and helps shape a smooth contour. Most swelling subsides within 30 days; office work resumes after 2–3 weeks. For 2–3 months there is no sport, sauna or heavy lifting; early on, sleep on your back with your knees bent. The scar is fully mature by 12 months, fading until it is barely noticeable.

Tummy tuck: frequently asked questions

Can a tummy tuck be done together with liposuction or diastasis repair?

Yes, combining is allowed and is very common in practice. Liposuction of the flanks and waist is added to a tummy tuck, and after childbirth — repair of rectus diastasis. Recovery with such a combination is shorter, and the surgeon will tell you at an in-person consultation how extensive the procedure will be.

Tummy tuck in Vancouver: what you should know

Who is a candidate? Adults aged 18 and over with no contraindications; there is no upper age limit, and each case is considered after an examination. Surgery is done at a stable weight and is not performed during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Contraindications also include decompensated diabetes, blood clotting disorders, cancer and serious heart, kidney or liver disease. Vancouver patients get a personal assessment.

Recovery has three milestones. Office work is possible after 2–3 weeks, swelling and tightness pass by 1.5–2 months, and the final result and scar are assessed at 6–12 months once tissues have adapted. Most swelling goes within 30 days. Sport, sauna and heavy lifting wait 2–3 months, and sleeping on your back with knees bent is advised at first. The same timeline applies to Vancouver patients.

Nothing about the cost is hidden. The surgeon sets the price for abdominoplasty after a free in-person examination, and that amount is fixed in the contract. The surgeon stays in touch throughout recovery, and check-ups are part of the plan. For people from Vancouver, the fastest way to get an exact figure is to leave a request; a coordinator will call and book a time.
