What is a tummy tuck
and who is it for?

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) tightens the front of the abdominal wall surgically, removing extra stretched skin and fat. It is not for weight loss and doesn't take the place of diet and exercise. The target is a flat abdomen: the overhanging skin-and-fat apron removed, separated rectus muscles repaired and a new navel created if needed.

After childbirth, a C-section or major weight loss, excess skin and diastasis — separated rectus abdominis muscles — may remain, and that is when it is chosen. Diet and exercise can't solve this: stretched skin won't shrink and separated muscles won't rejoin without surgery. Pregnancy should be planned 12 months or more later; no surgery while breastfeeding.

Tummy tuck techniques at City Medical Centre

Classic tummy tuck

The classic operation begins with a horizontal cut above the pubic area, its length depending on the excess tissue. The scar line is placed so that underwear and swimwear cover it. The surgeon repairs separated rectus muscles, removes excess skin and fat, repositions the navel and places drains; it lasts 2–4 hours under general anaesthesia.

Indicated for marked excess skin, rectus diastasis and a C-section scar.

Mini tummy tuck with diastasis repair

The mini version addresses a narrower issue: the lower abdomen alone is corrected, the incision is shorter, and the navel remains where it is. It fits a small excess of skin when the main problem is diastasis or an overhang above a C-section scar, and recovery is shorter. At an in-person consultation the surgeon assesses the abdominal muscles and skin and chooses the technique.

Less traumatic, with shorter recovery, when excess skin is minor.

How the surgery goes: from consultation to result

Surgeon consultation

The surgeon hears your wishes, examines you, assesses fat deposits and rules out contraindications. At City Medical Centre a hormone screening is also ordered, which helps predict the long-term result.

Pre-surgery check-up

A chest X-ray, an ECG and blood tests (complete count, coagulation panel, biochemistry, infections — HIV, hepatitis, syphilis), plus a GP consultation if needed.

All tests can be done at the clinic with no waiting.

Preparation

2 weeks before surgery, medicines that affect blood clotting are stopped. One week before, alcohol and smoking are ruled out to speed healing. Last meal — 8 hours before.

Surgery day

Skin marking, compression garment fitting and a meeting with the surgeon. The surgery lasts 2–4 hours and is done under general anaesthesia.

Waking up and monitoring

For 1–3 days after surgery the patient stays in hospital, under medical supervision.

Recovery

1.5–2 months in a compression binder. Most of the swelling is gone within 30 days; you can return to office work after 2–3 weeks. The final result is assessed at 3 months.

Recovery after a tummy tuck

The patient remains in hospital under medical supervision for 1–3 days right after surgery. Drains are usually taken out after two days and stitches after 7 days. A compression binder, worn for 1.5–2 months, supports the abdominal wall and shapes a smooth contour. Within 30 days most swelling goes; after 2–3 weeks you can return to office work. Sports, sauna and heavy lifting are not allowed for 2–3 months, and sleeping on your back with knees bent is recommended at first. By 12 months the scar has matured fully: it fades and is hardly visible.

Tummy tuck: frequently asked questions

Can a tummy tuck be paired with liposuction or diastasis repair?

Yes, it's allowed and very common in practice. Liposuction of the flanks and waist is added to a tummy tuck, and after childbirth — repair of rectus diastasis. A combination like this shortens recovery, and at an in-person consultation the surgeon will explain how extensive the procedure will be.

Tummy tuck in Rotterdam: from consultation to result

Timing matters with abdominoplasty. Because pregnancy stretches the repaired muscles again, surgeons advise having it once your family is complete and planning a pregnancy no earlier than a year afterwards. It is also done only at a stable weight: if yours is still changing, a dietitian or endocrinologist comes first. Women in Rotterdam thinking about the procedure after childbirth should keep this order in mind.

In the classic operation the surgeon makes a horizontal incision above the pubic area, its length set by the amount of excess tissue. The separated rectus muscles are repaired, excess skin and fat are removed, the navel is repositioned and drains are placed. The mini version works only on the lower abdomen through a shorter incision. Patients from Rotterdam are under general anaesthesia throughout.

The first step costs nothing: the consultation with the surgeon is free. You get an assessment of excess skin and muscle separation, a recommended technique, an explanation of recovery and your personal price. Patients from Rotterdam can then decide calmly, with the amount fixed in the contract. Fill in the short form on the page, and a coordinator will call back shortly.
