What is a tummy tuck
and who is it for?

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is a surgical tightening of the anterior abdominal wall with removal of excess stretched skin and fat. Don't think of it as weight loss or a replacement for diet and exercise. The goal is a flat abdomen: the hanging skin-and-fat apron removed, separated rectus muscles repaired and, if necessary, a new navel formed.

It is the choice when excess skin and diastasis (separated rectus abdominis muscles) remain after childbirth, a C-section or major weight loss. This can't be fixed with diet or exercise, since stretched skin doesn't shrink and separated muscles don't close without surgery. Pregnancy is planned 12 months or more later, and surgery is not performed while breastfeeding.

Tummy tuck techniques at City Medical Centre

Classic tummy tuck

A classic tummy tuck starts with a horizontal incision above the pubic area; how long it is depends on the excess tissue. The scar is placed so underwear and swimwear cover it. The surgeon repairs the separated rectus muscles, removes excess skin and fat, moves the navel and places drains, taking 2–4 hours under general anaesthesia.

Right for marked excess skin, rectus diastasis and a caesarean scar.

Mini tummy tuck with diastasis repair

The mini tummy tuck targets a narrower issue — correcting only the lower abdomen through a shorter incision, without moving the navel. It is used when excess skin is small and the main concern is diastasis or overhang above a C-section scar; recovery is then shorter. After assessing the abdominal muscles and skin at an in-person consultation, the surgeon chooses the technique.

When excess skin is minor: less trauma and shorter recovery.

How the surgery goes: from consultation to result

Surgeon consultation

We listen to your wishes: the surgeon examines you, assesses the fat deposits and rules out contraindications. City Medical Centre also orders hormone screening that helps predict the long-term result.

Pre-surgery check-up

ECG, chest X-ray and blood tests (complete count, coagulation panel, biochemistry, HIV, hepatitis, syphilis), plus a GP consultation where needed.

All tests can be done at the clinic with no waiting.

Preparation

Stop medicines affecting blood clotting 2 weeks before. Avoid alcohol and smoking for the final week, for faster healing. Eat for the last time 8 hours before.

Surgery day

Meeting the surgeon, skin marking and fitting of compression garments. The surgery is under general anaesthesia and lasts 2–4 hours.

Waking up and monitoring

The patient is kept in hospital under medical supervision for 1–3 days after surgery.

Recovery

Wear a compression binder for 1.5–2 months. Within 30 days most swelling goes down, office work resumes in 2–3 weeks, and at 3 months the final result is assessed.

Recovery after a tummy tuck

Right after the operation, 1–3 days in hospital under medical supervision. Drains usually come out after two days and stitches after 7 days. The compression binder stays on for 1.5–2 months, supporting the abdominal wall and shaping a smooth contour. Most swelling passes within 30 days, and you can go back to office work after 2–3 weeks. Sport, sauna and heavy lifting are ruled out for 2–3 months; it's advised to sleep on your back with knees bent early on. After 12 months the scar is fully mature — faded and barely noticeable.

Tummy tuck: frequently asked questions

Can a tummy tuck be done together with liposuction or diastasis repair?

Yes, combining is permitted and very widespread. A tummy tuck is often done with flank and waist liposuction, and after childbirth with repair of rectus diastasis. Recovery is shorter with this combination; the scope of the procedure is explained by the surgeon at an in-person consultation.

Tummy tuck in Mysuru: techniques, stages and recovery

Two techniques are available. The classic tummy tuck uses a horizontal incision above the pubic area, repairs the muscles, removes excess tissue and repositions the navel; it suits marked excess skin and a C-section scar. The mini tummy tuck corrects only the lower abdomen through a shorter incision without moving the navel. For each patient from Mysuru, the surgeon chooses in person.

Compression is not optional: without the garment recovery is worse, because it supports the tissues and reduces swelling. For the first 3–4 weeks it is worn around the clock, then for about another month during the day; the operating surgeon names the exact period. For at least a month, sauna, pool, tanning beds, alcohol and smoking are off-limits. Mysuru patients receive the full list of restrictions from the surgeon.

A tummy tuck price is personal. It reflects how much excess skin needs removing, whether the navel is repositioned and whether separated muscles are repaired. To find out yours, book a free consultation: the surgeon examines you, answers questions about the scar, recovery and pregnancy planning and confirms the cost. Mysuru residents can apply online or through a messenger.
