What is a tummy tuck
and who is it for?

With a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), the front abdominal wall is tightened surgically and excess stretched skin and fat are removed. It neither causes weight loss nor replaces diet and exercise. The aim is a flat abdominal contour — removing the overhanging skin-and-fat apron, repairing separated rectus muscles and, where necessary, forming a new navel.

It is chosen when excess skin and diastasis — separated rectus abdominis muscles — remain after childbirth, a C-section or major weight loss. Diet and exercise cannot fix this: stretched skin does not shrink and separated muscles do not rejoin without surgery. Pregnancy should be planned 12 months or more later, and surgery is not done while breastfeeding.

Tummy tuck techniques at City Medical Centre

Classic tummy tuck

In the classic operation, a horizontal incision is made above the pubic area, with its length set by the amount of excess tissue. The scar line is planned to be hidden by underwear and swimwear. Separated rectus muscles are repaired, excess skin and fat removed, the navel repositioned and drains placed — 2–4 hours under general anaesthesia.

Right for marked excess skin, rectus diastasis and a caesarean scar.

Mini tummy tuck with diastasis repair

A mini tummy tuck is for a narrower issue — only the lower abdomen is corrected, through a shorter incision, and the navel is not moved. It is used with a small amount of excess skin where the key concern is diastasis or overhang above a C-section scar; recovery is then shorter. The surgeon selects the technique at an in-person consultation after assessing the abdominal muscles and skin.

Less trauma, shorter recovery — for cases with minor excess skin.

How the surgery goes: from consultation to result

Surgeon consultation

At the visit the surgeon listens to your goals, examines you, assesses the fat deposits and checks for contraindications. A hormone screening is also ordered at City Medical Centre, helping to predict the long-term result.

Pre-surgery check-up

Blood tests (complete count, coagulation panel, biochemistry, infections — HIV, hepatitis, syphilis), ECG, chest X-ray and, if needed, a GP consultation.

All tests can be done at the clinic with no waiting.

Preparation

2 weeks before, stop medicines that affect blood clotting. A week before, give up alcohol and smoking to heal faster. 8 hours before, have your last meal.

Surgery day

The surgeon meets you, marks the skin and fits the compression garments. The operation lasts 2–4 hours under general anaesthesia.

Waking up and monitoring

You stay in hospital under medical supervision for 1–3 days after surgery.

Recovery

You wear a compression binder for 1.5–2 months. Most swelling resolves within 30 days and you can go back to office work after 2–3 weeks; the final result is judged at 3 months.

Recovery after a tummy tuck

Right after the operation, 1–3 days in hospital under medical supervision. Drains usually come out after two days and stitches after 7 days. The compression binder stays on for 1.5–2 months, supporting the abdominal wall and shaping a smooth contour. Most swelling passes within 30 days, and you can go back to office work after 2–3 weeks. Sport, sauna and heavy lifting are ruled out for 2–3 months; it's advised to sleep on your back with knees bent early on. After 12 months the scar is fully mature — faded and barely noticeable.

Tummy tuck: frequently asked questions

Can you combine a tummy tuck and liposuction or diastasis repair?

Yes, combining is allowed and is very common in practice. Liposuction of the flanks and waist is added to a tummy tuck, and after childbirth — repair of rectus diastasis. Recovery with such a combination is shorter, and the surgeon will tell you at an in-person consultation how extensive the procedure will be.

Tummy tuck in Kochi: techniques, stages and recovery

Who is a candidate? Adults aged 18 and over with no contraindications; there is no upper age limit, and each case is considered after an examination. Surgery is done at a stable weight and is not performed during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Contraindications also include decompensated diabetes, blood clotting disorders, cancer and serious heart, kidney or liver disease. Kochi patients get a personal assessment.

Here is the route in brief. Consultation and hormone screening. Tests: blood and urine, coagulation, biochemistry, infections, ECG, chest X-ray, leg vein ultrasound and a GP's report. Surgery lasting 2–4 hours. One to three days in hospital. A compression binder, then check-ups at 7 days, 3 months and 6 months. Patients in Kochi follow this same sequence from start to finish.

Combining procedures can make the plan more efficient: a tummy tuck with flank and waist liposuction or diastasis repair is done under one anaesthesia with one recovery period. The price for such a combination, as for a standalone operation, is set after a free consultation and fixed in the contract. People in Kochi can book that consultation through the form or any messenger.
