What is a tummy tuck
and who is it for?

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) surgically tightens the front abdominal wall and removes excess stretched skin and fat. It is not a weight-loss method and does not replace diet and exercise. The aim is a flat abdominal contour: removing the overhanging skin-and-fat apron, repairing separated rectus muscles and, if needed, creating a new navel.

Patients choose it when excess skin and diastasis, the separation of the rectus abdominis muscles, persist after childbirth, a C-section or major weight loss. Diet and exercise don't help: stretched skin does not shrink, and separated muscles do not reunite without surgery. Plan pregnancy at least 12 months later; surgery is not done while breastfeeding.

Tummy tuck techniques at City Medical Centre

Classic tummy tuck

In a classic tummy tuck the surgeon makes a horizontal incision above the pubic area; the length depends on the amount of excess tissue. The scar line is planned for underwear and swimwear to hide it. Separated rectus muscles are repaired, excess skin and fat removed, the navel repositioned and drains placed, over 2–4 hours under general anaesthesia.

Suits significant excess skin, rectus diastasis and a C-section scar.

Mini tummy tuck with diastasis repair

The mini version addresses a narrower issue: the lower abdomen alone is corrected, the incision is shorter, and the navel remains where it is. It fits a small excess of skin when the main problem is diastasis or an overhang above a C-section scar, and recovery is shorter. At an in-person consultation the surgeon assesses the abdominal muscles and skin and chooses the technique.

Less trauma and a shorter recovery when excess skin is minor.

How the surgery goes: from consultation to result

Surgeon consultation

The surgeon listens to your wishes and examines you, assessing fat deposits and ruling out contraindications. City Medical Centre also prescribes a hormone screening that helps predict the long-term result.

Pre-surgery check-up

Pre-surgery tests: blood (complete count, coagulation panel, biochemistry, infections — HIV, hepatitis, syphilis), ECG, chest X-ray and, if needed, a GP consultation.

All tests can be done at the clinic with no waiting.

Preparation

Stop blood-clotting medicines 2 weeks before; stop alcohol and smoking a week before for faster healing; eat the last meal 8 hours before.

Surgery day

Meeting the surgeon, marking the skin, fitting compression garments. The surgery takes 2–4 hours, with general anaesthesia.

Waking up and monitoring

Post-surgery, the patient spends 1–3 days in hospital with medical supervision.

Recovery

Compression binder — 1.5–2 months. Most swelling goes within 30 days; office work resumes after 2–3 weeks. The final result is assessed at 6–12 months.

Recovery after a tummy tuck

Following surgery, the patient stays 1–3 days in hospital under medical supervision. Drains usually come out after two days, and stitches after 7 days. For 1.5–2 months a compression binder supports the abdominal wall and shapes a smooth contour. Within 30 days most swelling goes, and office work is possible after 2–3 weeks. Sports, sauna and heavy lifting are not allowed for 2–3 months; in the early days, sleep on your back with your knees bent. By 12 months the scar is fully mature: faded and barely noticeable.

Tummy tuck: frequently asked questions

Tummy tuck with liposuction or diastasis repair — can they be combined?

Yes, combining is allowed and extremely common. Liposuction of the waist and flanks is added to a tummy tuck, as is rectus diastasis repair after childbirth. With this combination, recovery is shorter, and the surgeon will tell you in person at a consultation how extensive the procedure will be.

Tummy tuck in Al Fayyum step by step

Abdominoplasty is often combined with other procedures. Liposuction of the flanks and waist can be added to shape the silhouette, and after childbirth rectus diastasis repair is included. One anaesthesia and one recovery period cover everything, and the surgeon decides the scope at an in-person consultation. This makes the operation a complete abdominal correction for patients from Al Fayyum.

Compression is not optional: without the garment recovery is worse, because it supports the tissues and reduces swelling. For the first 3–4 weeks it is worn around the clock, then for about another month during the day; the operating surgeon names the exact period. For at least a month, sauna, pool, tanning beds, alcohol and smoking are off-limits. Al Fayyum patients receive the full list of restrictions from the surgeon.

The first step costs nothing: the consultation with the surgeon is free. You get an assessment of excess skin and muscle separation, a recommended technique, an explanation of recovery and your personal price. Patients from Al Fayyum can then decide calmly, with the amount fixed in the contract. Fill in the short form on the page, and a coordinator will call back shortly.
