before surgery
A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) tightens the front of the abdominal wall surgically, removing extra stretched skin and fat. It is not for weight loss and doesn't take the place of diet and exercise. The target is a flat abdomen: the overhanging skin-and-fat apron removed, separated rectus muscles repaired and a new navel created if needed.
It is chosen if excess skin and diastasis (separation of the rectus abdominis muscles) stay after childbirth, a C-section or major weight loss. Diet and exercise cannot help: stretched skin doesn't shrink and separated muscles won't rejoin without surgery. Pregnancy is best planned 12 months or more later, and surgery is not done during breastfeeding.

Classic tummy tuck
The classic operation starts above the pubic area with a horizontal incision whose length depends on the excess tissue. Its scar line is planned so underwear and swimwear hide it. The surgeon repairs the separated rectus muscles, removes excess skin and fat, repositions the navel and places drains — all in 2–4 hours under general anaesthesia.
Suits marked excess skin, rectus diastasis and a C-section scar.

Mini tummy tuck with diastasis repair
In a mini tummy tuck the scope is narrower: the surgeon corrects just the lower abdomen, the incision is shorter and the navel is not repositioned. It is used for small excess skin when the main concern is diastasis or overhang above a C-section scar, and recovery is shorter. The technique is chosen at an in-person consultation, once the abdominal muscles and skin are assessed.
When excess skin is minor: less trauma and shorter recovery.

Surgeon consultation
The surgeon discusses your wishes, carries out an examination, assesses fat deposits and excludes contraindications. City Medical Centre adds a hormone screening to help predict the long-term result.

Pre-surgery check-up
A chest X-ray, an ECG and blood tests (complete count, coagulation panel, biochemistry, infections — HIV, hepatitis, syphilis), plus a GP consultation if needed.
All tests can be done at the clinic with no waiting.

Preparation
2 weeks before: blood-clotting medicines are stopped. A week before: alcohol and smoking are off, to heal faster. 8 hours before: the last meal.

Surgery day
Meeting the surgeon, skin marking and fitting of compression garments. The surgery is under general anaesthesia and lasts 2–4 hours.

Waking up and monitoring
The patient remains in hospital under medical supervision for 1–3 days after surgery.

Recovery
A compression binder is worn for 1.5–2 months. Most swelling goes in 30 days, and office work is possible after 2–3 weeks. Final result — at 6–12 months.

The patient stays in hospital under medical supervision for 1–3 days right after surgery. Usually drains are removed after two days and stitches after 7 days. Wearing a compression binder for 1.5–2 months supports the abdominal wall and gives a smooth contour. Most swelling is gone within 30 days, with office work resuming after 2–3 weeks. For 2–3 months avoid sports, sauna and heavy lifting; at first, sleeping on your back with knees bent is recommended. By 12 months the scar is fully mature, faded and barely noticeable.

Can a tummy tuck be done together with liposuction or diastasis repair?
Yes, combining is allowed and is very common in practice. Liposuction of the flanks and waist is added to a tummy tuck, and after childbirth — repair of rectus diastasis. Recovery with such a combination is shorter, and the surgeon will tell you at an in-person consultation how extensive the procedure will be.
Is a tummy tuck a way to lose weight?
No, you won't lose weight with it. Its task is to remove excess stretched skin and the fat apron and restore the muscle wall of the abdomen. The surgery requires a stable weight; while your weight is still changing, see a dietitian or endocrinologist first.
Will there be a scar after surgery?
Yes, there will be a scar — you can't remove excess skin without one. In a classic tummy tuck the incision crosses the lower abdomen from hip to hip and stays below the underwear or swimsuit line; a mini tummy tuck needs a much shorter one. Over time the scar fades and thins out.
Will the surgery remove stretch marks and sagging skin?
The surgery does exactly that: it removes sagging skin and the fat apron completely, and the stretch marks below the navel are removed with them. Pulling the upper abdominal skin downward, the surgeon leaves the tummy smooth without an extra lift.
Is the surgery painful?
No, the patient feels no pain during the procedure: a tummy tuck is done under general anaesthesia, so nothing is felt. Tightness and soreness appear in the first days and are relieved with painkillers prescribed by the doctor; by the end of the first week the discomfort eases noticeably.
What should you avoid after a tummy tuck?
After a tummy tuck the restrictions are the same for all patients. In the first 2–3 weeks, physical exertion, heavy lifting and sudden movements are not allowed. For at least a month, avoid sauna, steam bath, pool, tanning beds, alcohol and smoking. Sport resumes gradually and only with the surgeon's approval. Another 4–8 weeks in compression garments.
What is the minimum age for a tummy tuck, and is there an upper age limit?
From 18, and only without contraindications. As for an upper limit, there is none: our clinic considers every case individually after an examination and health assessment.
How does a mini tummy tuck differ from a classic one?
Scope of surgery is the whole difference. A mini tummy tuck is for small excess skin below the navel — shorter incision, navel left in place, faster recovery. A classic one removes the skin-and-fat apron across the entire abdomen, involves moving the navel and allows diastasis repair along the full length of the muscles.
How long does recovery take?
Three milestones mark recovery: after 2–3 weeks you can do office work, by 1.5–2 months swelling and tightness pass, and at 6–12 months, with the tissues fully adapted, the final result and scar are assessed.
Will the result last with weight gain and after pregnancy?
Removed skin does not grow back — that part of the result is permanent. The abdomen will stretch again only with significant weight gain, so keep your weight stable. Pregnancy after a tummy tuck is possible, but it stretches the repaired muscles, so surgery is planned once your family is complete.
Do you need special preparation for surgery?
Yes, it is required. 7–10 days ahead of a tummy tuck, give up smoking, alcohol and medicines that affect blood clotting. You'll need a pre-surgery check-up: blood tests, ECG, leg vein ultrasound, plus GP and anaesthetist consultations. Complete it early, not on the day before.
When will the result be visible?
It's the same for all patients: the first changes show 2 weeks after surgery, when the main swelling goes down. After that there are two checkpoints — an interim result at 1.5–2 months and the final contours at 6–12 months.
Do you need to stay in hospital, and for how long?
Yes, you need to stay in hospital: 1–3 days under medical supervision for a classic tummy tuck, usually one day for a mini tummy tuck. Recovery goes on at home, with the surgeon checking on it at scheduled check-ups.
What tests are needed before surgery?
Everyone gets the same list before a tummy tuck: blood and urine tests, a coagulation panel, biochemistry, infection tests, an ECG, chest X-ray, leg vein ultrasound and a GP's report. At the consultation the surgeon gives the exact list; tests are usually valid for 10–14 days.
Is diastasis always repaired during a tummy tuck?
No, repair isn't for everyone: it is done only if the rectus abdominis muscles are truly separated. Diastasis is seen by the surgeon during the examination and, where there is doubt, confirmed with ultrasound. The muscles are brought together in the same surgery, without a separate procedure.
Can you plan a pregnancy after a tummy tuck?
Pregnancy after a tummy tuck is not forbidden, but the order matters: childbirth first, then surgery. Otherwise skin and muscles stretch again and part of the result is lost. Surgeons give one piece of advice: if you plan a child, wait at least a year after the procedure.
Do you have to wear compression garments, and for how long?
Yes, it is mandatory: recovery is worse without the garment, which supports the tissues and reduces swelling. It is worn around the clock for the first 3–4 weeks, then for about another month during the day. The exact period is named by the operating surgeon.
Two techniques are available. The classic tummy tuck uses a horizontal incision above the pubic area, repairs the muscles, removes excess tissue and repositions the navel; it suits marked excess skin and a C-section scar. The mini tummy tuck corrects only the lower abdomen through a shorter incision without moving the navel. For each patient from Al Ahmadi, the surgeon chooses in person.
Compression is not optional: without the garment recovery is worse, because it supports the tissues and reduces swelling. For the first 3–4 weeks it is worn around the clock, then for about another month during the day; the operating surgeon names the exact period. For at least a month, sauna, pool, tanning beds, alcohol and smoking are off-limits. Al Ahmadi patients receive the full list of restrictions from the surgeon.
Budget planning starts with a conversation, not a price list. At the free consultation the surgeon explains what your case requires and gives a figure that does not change later: it goes into the contract with no hidden charges. The clinic has 400+ successful surgeries and 10 years of abdominal surgery experience. Patients from Al Ahmadi simply leave a phone number to begin.
