What is osteoarthritis
(arthrosis)?

In osteoarthritis, sometimes called arthrosis, the joint's cartilage lining wears away bit by bit over years. That cartilage normally absorbs shock; once it breaks down, bone rubs on bone and the joint becomes painful, stiff and less mobile. It is a disease of wear rather than inflammation, even if episodes of swelling happen.

Osteoarthritis usually develops in the most heavily loaded joints, such as the knee (gonarthrosis) and hip (coxarthrosis), and also in the ankle and small hand joints. It is treated most effectively at early and moderate stages, before the joint surfaces are badly damaged; if the stage is advanced, the doctor will honestly tell you when joint replacement is more realistic.

Joints we treat

From large joints to small ones — which joint, which method and how many injections is decided after the doctor studies your scans

Methods we use

Cell therapy (SVF) from your own adipose tissue

Cell therapy (SVF) from your own adipose tissue

A small sample of your adipose tissue is processed to isolate the stromal vascular fraction (SVF) — a mix of cells involved in tissue repair. Combined with your own plasma, it is injected into the affected joint.

It is used mainly at early and moderate stages of osteoarthritis to slow cartilage wear and reduce friction between the joint surfaces.

PRP — platelet-rich plasma from your own blood

PRP — platelet-rich plasma from your own blood

From a little of your blood, plasma rich in platelets and growth factors is separated and injected into the joint. It calms inflammation and gives tissue repair better conditions.

It is often used for mild osteoarthritis, and together with SVF when a stronger effect is needed.

How the procedure goes: step by step

Consultation and scan review

After examining the joint and reviewing your X-rays, MRI or ultrasound, the doctor decides whether the procedure suits you. Scans you already have can be sent before the visit.

Blood sample for PRP

A small volume of venous blood is collected; from it, platelet-rich plasma with growth factors is prepared later on.

The doctor tells you in advance which tests are needed.

Adipose tissue sample

Under local anaesthetic, a small portion of adipose tissue (about 30 ml) is taken through a puncture on the abdomen or inner thigh. No stitches are needed.

Processing in a centrifuge

The centrifuge spins the sample until it separates into layers; the isolated stromal vascular fraction is then mixed with the platelet-rich plasma.
The whole procedure is done in one day.

Injection into the joint

With ultrasound guiding the needle, the prepared material is injected directly into the affected joint and placed precisely.

Follow-up

Neither a hospital stay nor crutches — and after the procedure the doctor stays in contact and follows how the joint is responding.

Follow-up visits

After 1 month
3 months
6 months

The plan is adjusted at follow-up visits, where the doctor sees how the joint responds. Pain usually eases in month one, mobility improves over about three months, and the full effect appears over around six months.

After the procedure

Most patients are home the same day and resume normal daily life within a day or two, with small dressings on the punctures. Slightly more aching in the joint during the first week is an expected reaction. Over the first month pain usually eases; over about three months activity and mobility improve; over around six months the full effect develops. The duration of the result is individual, depending on the stage, body weight, activity and other factors — no one can promise a fixed outcome. Regular, joint-friendly exercise and a healthy weight help it last longer.

Joint treatment: frequently asked questions

Osteoarthritis in Portland: stages, methods and price

Cartilage works as a shock absorber. When it thins, the bones start to rub against each other, and the joint becomes painful and less mobile. Osteoarthritis in Portland is a degenerative condition rather than an inflammatory one, although flare-ups with swelling happen.

Many patients in Portland notice the first changes 2–3 weeks after the procedure. A stable result forms over about six months and can last from several months to several years, depending on the individual.

Knee or hip osteoarthritis? Patients from Portland can send their X-rays or MRI and get a free assessment of the stage and a clear answer on suitable treatment and its price.
