What is osteoarthritis
(arthrosis)?

Osteoarthritis is a chronic condition, also referred to as arthrosis, in which the joint's cartilage thins and erodes step by step. As the cushioning layer fails, bones start rubbing together — the source of pain, stiffness and a reduced range of movement. It is a wear-related, degenerative disease; swollen flare-ups can still appear.

The joints under the heaviest load are affected most often: the knee (gonarthrosis), the hip (coxarthrosis), the ankle and the small joints of the hand. Treatment gives the best results at early and moderate stages, while the joint surfaces are still in fair condition; if the stage is advanced, the doctor will say plainly when joint replacement is the more realistic choice.

Joints we treat

From large joints to small ones — which joint, which method and how many injections is decided after the doctor studies your scans

Methods we use

Cell therapy (SVF) from your own adipose tissue

Cell therapy (SVF) from your own adipose tissue

From a small sample of your adipose tissue, the stromal vascular fraction (SVF) is isolated — a set of cells involved in repairing tissue. Mixed with your own plasma, it is then injected into the joint that is affected.

Doctors use it chiefly in early and moderate osteoarthritis, aiming to slow cartilage wear and cut friction between the joint surfaces.

PRP — platelet-rich plasma from your own blood

PRP — platelet-rich plasma from your own blood

Platelet- and growth-factor-rich plasma is separated from a small amount of your blood and then injected into the joint, helping to calm inflammation and create better conditions for tissue repair.

Often chosen for mild osteoarthritis, and paired with SVF if a stronger effect is needed.

How the procedure goes: step by step

Consultation and scan review

An examination of the joint and a review of your X-rays, MRI or ultrasound let the doctor decide if the procedure is suitable. Existing scans can be sent in advance of the visit.

Blood sample for PRP

Blood in a small amount is drawn from a vein, and later platelet-rich plasma rich in growth factors is prepared from it.

The doctor tells you in advance which tests are needed.

Adipose tissue sample

The doctor numbs the area with local anaesthetic and takes about 30 ml of adipose tissue through a puncture on the abdomen or inner thigh; stitches are not required.

Processing in a centrifuge

Spinning in a centrifuge splits the sample into layers, after which the stromal vascular fraction is isolated and mixed with the platelet-rich plasma.
The whole procedure is done in one day.

Injection into the joint

The prepared material is injected directly into the affected joint under ultrasound guidance, which helps place it precisely.

Follow-up

There is no hospital stay and you will not need crutches. The doctor remains in contact after the procedure and follows the joint's response.

Follow-up visits

After 1 month
3 months
6 months

At the follow-up visits the doctor reviews the joint's response and adjusts the plan. Expect pain to ease over the first month, mobility to improve over about three months and the full effect to develop over around six months.

After the procedure

Going home the same day is the norm, and normal daily activity usually resumes within a day or two; small dressings cover the puncture sites. In the first week the joint may ache slightly more, which is expected. During the first month pain usually eases, over about three months mobility and activity improve, and around six months are needed for the full effect. Its duration differs from person to person, depending on the stage, body weight, activity and other factors, so no fixed result can be promised. Keeping weight healthy and exercising regularly in a joint-friendly way helps it last longer.

Joint treatment: frequently asked questions

Osteoarthritis in Mukalla: from X-ray to follow-up

Knee and hip osteoarthritis are the most common reasons patients from Mukalla consider joint replacement. SVF and PRP therapy is a way to try to delay or avoid surgery while the joint can still be preserved.

The right activity strengthens the muscles that unload the joint and helps cartilage nutrition. Patients from Mukalla are advised swimming, cycling, Nordic walking or yoga, and to avoid running on hard surfaces, jumping and heavy lifting.

The cost of osteoarthritis treatment depends on the joint, the stage and the method, so the price is set at the consultation. For patients from Mukalla, the first consultation and review of your scans are free. Leave your name and phone number to book.
