What is osteoarthritis
(arthrosis)?

With osteoarthritis (arthrosis), the cartilage that lines a joint gradually wears away over time. This cartilage is the joint's shock absorber, and when it is lost the bones rub against each other, causing pain, stiffness and limited mobility. The condition is degenerative, not inflammatory, although it can flare up with swelling.

Joints carrying the greatest load are affected most frequently — the knee (gonarthrosis), the hip (coxarthrosis), the ankle and the small hand joints. Treatment is most successful at an early or moderate stage, before the joint surfaces are badly damaged; with advanced disease the doctor will honestly say if joint replacement is the more realistic route.

Joints we treat

Both large and small joints — after reviewing your scans, the doctor selects the joint, the method and how many injections you need

Methods we use

Cell therapy (SVF) from your own adipose tissue

Cell therapy (SVF) from your own adipose tissue

We take a small sample of your adipose tissue and process it to isolate the stromal vascular fraction (SVF), a mix of cells that take part in tissue repair. It is combined with your own plasma and injected into the affected joint.

Most often it is applied in early and moderate osteoarthritis, helping slow the wear of cartilage and reduce friction in the joint.

PRP — platelet-rich plasma from your own blood

PRP — platelet-rich plasma from your own blood

A small amount of your blood is used to separate plasma rich in platelets and growth factors, which is then injected into the joint. It helps settle inflammation and creates better conditions for tissue repair.

For mild osteoarthritis it is often used alone, and with SVF when the effect needs to be stronger.

How the procedure goes: step by step

Consultation and scan review

An examination of the joint and a review of your X-rays, MRI or ultrasound let the doctor decide if the procedure is suitable. Existing scans can be sent in advance of the visit.

Blood sample for PRP

A small amount of blood is taken from a vein. Platelet-rich plasma with growth factors is later prepared from it.

The doctor tells you in advance which tests are needed.

Adipose tissue sample

Under local anaesthetic, a small portion of adipose tissue (about 30 ml) is taken through a puncture on the abdomen or inner thigh. No stitches are needed.

Processing in a centrifuge

The centrifuge spins the sample until it separates into layers; the isolated stromal vascular fraction is then mixed with the platelet-rich plasma.
The whole procedure is done in one day.

Injection into the joint

Prepared material is delivered by injection straight into the affected joint, and ultrasound guidance helps with precise placement.

Follow-up

No crutches and no hospital stay. The doctor stays in touch after the procedure and follows how the joint responds.

Follow-up visits

After 1 month
3 months
6 months

Follow-up visits show the doctor how your joint responds so the plan can be adjusted; usually pain eases within the first month, mobility improves over about three months, and the full effect takes around six months to develop.

After the procedure

Most patients are home the same day and resume normal daily life within a day or two, with small dressings on the punctures. Slightly more aching in the joint during the first week is an expected reaction. Over the first month pain usually eases; over about three months activity and mobility improve; over around six months the full effect develops. The duration of the result is individual, depending on the stage, body weight, activity and other factors — no one can promise a fixed outcome. Regular, joint-friendly exercise and a healthy weight help it last longer.

Joint treatment: frequently asked questions

What Medina residents ask about osteoarthritis

The stage matters most. At early and moderate stages, SVF and PRP injections aim to ease pain, reduce friction between the joint surfaces and slow cartilage wear. At the most advanced stage, the doctor will tell patients in Medina honestly if joint replacement is the more realistic option.

PRP is often used for mild osteoarthritis, and SVF with PRP when a stronger effect is needed. The method and the number of injections are chosen for each patient in Medina after the examination.

Do not wait until the joint is destroyed. Book a free consultation in Medina: early and moderate osteoarthritis responds best to treatment. The price is set individually.
