What is osteoarthritis
(arthrosis)?

With osteoarthritis (arthrosis), the cartilage that lines a joint gradually wears away over time. This cartilage is the joint's shock absorber, and when it is lost the bones rub against each other, causing pain, stiffness and limited mobility. The condition is degenerative, not inflammatory, although it can flare up with swelling.

The joints under the heaviest load are affected most often: the knee (gonarthrosis), the hip (coxarthrosis), the ankle and the small joints of the hand. Treatment gives the best results at early and moderate stages, while the joint surfaces are still in fair condition; if the stage is advanced, the doctor will say plainly when joint replacement is the more realistic choice.

Joints we treat

Large or small joints: your scans come first, then the doctor decides on the joint, the method and the number of injections

Methods we use

Cell therapy (SVF) from your own adipose tissue

Cell therapy (SVF) from your own adipose tissue

A little of your adipose tissue is taken and processed so that the stromal vascular fraction (SVF) can be separated: cells that help tissues repair. This is combined with your own plasma and injected into the joint affected by the disease.

It is mainly indicated for early and moderate stages of osteoarthritis, where it slows cartilage wear and eases friction between the joint surfaces.

PRP — platelet-rich plasma from your own blood

PRP — platelet-rich plasma from your own blood

Your own blood, in a small amount, is processed to separate plasma rich in platelets and growth factors, which goes into the joint to calm inflammation and improve conditions for tissue repair.

Used often in mild osteoarthritis, it is added to SVF when a more pronounced effect is required.

How the procedure goes: step by step

Consultation and scan review

The doctor examines your joint, looks through your X-rays, MRI or ultrasound and decides whether the procedure is right for you. If you already have scans, you can send them ahead of the visit.

Blood sample for PRP

A small amount of venous blood is drawn, to be processed later into platelet-rich plasma with growth factors.

The doctor tells you in advance which tests are needed.

Adipose tissue sample

Under local anaesthetic, the doctor collects a small portion of adipose tissue (roughly 30 ml) via a puncture on the abdomen or the inner thigh. Stitches are not needed.

Processing in a centrifuge

After spinning in a centrifuge, the sample forms layers. The stromal vascular fraction is isolated from them and mixed with the platelet-rich plasma.
The whole procedure is done in one day.

Injection into the joint

Ultrasound guidance allows the prepared material to be injected directly and precisely into the affected joint.

Follow-up

Neither a hospital stay nor crutches — and after the procedure the doctor stays in contact and follows how the joint is responding.

Follow-up visits

After 1 month
3 months
6 months

Follow-up visits let the doctor see how the joint responds and adjust the plan — pain usually eases over the first month, mobility improves over about three months, and the full effect develops over around six months.

After the procedure

Usually you leave the same day and return to everyday activity within a day or two; the puncture sites just need small dressings. The joint can ache a bit more in the first week — this reaction is expected. Pain typically eases over the first month, mobility and activity improve over about three months, and the full effect develops over around six months. How long the result lasts is individual and depends on the stage of the condition, body weight, activity and other factors; a fixed result cannot be promised by anyone. A healthy weight and regular joint-friendly exercise help it last.

Joint treatment: frequently asked questions

What Latakia residents ask about osteoarthritis

The stage matters most. At early and moderate stages, SVF and PRP injections aim to ease pain, reduce friction between the joint surfaces and slow cartilage wear. At the most advanced stage, the doctor will tell patients in Latakia honestly if joint replacement is the more realistic option.

PRP is often used for mild osteoarthritis, and SVF with PRP when a stronger effect is needed. The method and the number of injections are chosen for each patient in Latakia after the examination.

The price depends on how many joints are treated and on the method. For patients from Latakia, the doctor explains the plan and the cost at a free consultation before any procedure.
