What is liposuction
and who is it for?

Liposuction is a surgical way to remove surplus subcutaneous fat from troublesome areas. It is not meant for weight loss or as an alternative to diet and exercise. Instead, it sculpts specific zones: thigh saddlebags, a sagging belly and fat deposits on the back, flanks, arms or chin.

Liposuction suits people whose specific areas hold on to fat despite a normal weight and an active lifestyle. The key point: fat cells removed from treated areas do not grow back, so with a steady lifestyle the result lasts for a long time.

Liposuction techniques at City Medical Centre

Tumescent (classic) liposuction

First, a special solution based on saline with lidocaine, adrenaline and several other agents is injected into the treatment area. It loosens the fat tissue and constricts the vessels, minimizing blood loss and allowing gentle removal. The fat emulsion is then removed by vacuum through a thin cannula.

After the operation swelling and bruising are minimal, and recovery is far easier than after a standard procedure.

VASER liposuction (ultrasound)

Ultrasound is used to break down fat cells ahead of vacuum removal. The method is ideal when you want clear muscle relief — athletic abs — and body contouring.

It also suits delicate areas.

How the surgery goes: from consultation to result

Surgeon consultation

At the visit the doctor listens to your goals, examines you, assesses the fat deposits and rules out contraindications. City Medical Centre adds a hormonal screening, which helps predict the long-term result.

Pre-operative tests

Pre-op tests: blood (complete count, coagulation panel, biochemistry, infections — HIV, hepatitis, syphilis), ECG, chest X-ray and, if needed, a GP consultation.

All tests can be done at the clinic with no waiting.

Preparation

2 weeks before surgery, drop medicines that affect clotting. One week before, stop drinking and smoking for faster healing. Last meal — 8 hours before.

Surgery day

You see the surgeon, who marks the areas, and the compression garments are fitted. Anesthesia can be local or general depending on the scope.
Lasts from 1 hour (small areas) to 3–4 hours (a combined procedure).

Waking up and monitoring

After general anesthesia — one day under observation in hospital. After local anesthesia — home 3–4 hours after surgery.

Recovery

Plan on 30–45 days of compression garments. Initial results show at 3–4 weeks as swelling subsides; in 3–6 months the skin has fully tightened and the final result is assessed.

Recovery after liposuction

The recovery after tumescent liposuction is far shorter than after a conventional procedure: most people go back to work in 7–10 days. Mild swelling and a raised temperature during the first week are normal responses to surgery. Compression garments, worn for 30–45 days, fix the new contours and speed up tissue recovery. No bathhouse, sauna, pool or intense sport during the first month. Lymphatic drainage massage, pressotherapy and a gradual return to activity are what we recommend for the best result and faster recovery. First visible changes appear in 3–4 weeks; the final result appears in 3–6 months.

Liposuction: frequently asked questions

Liposuction in Tunis: what you should know

Liposuction is not only a women's procedure. The abdomen and flanks are the top request for both sexes, and in men the chest is a separate case: the fat component of gynecomastia or pseudogynecomastia can be removed surgically. VASER, with ultrasound breakdown of fat, helps define pronounced muscle relief. Men in Tunis can discuss which technique suits their goals at the consultation.

Some rules matter after surgery. For the first seven days, no physical exertion or heavy lifting. For 4–6 weeks wear compression garments and avoid the bathhouse, sauna, pool and active sport. Alcohol and tanning beds are off-limits for at least a month. Your surgeon gives individual advice, and people from Tunis can stay in touch with the surgeon throughout recovery.
