What is regenerative
joint treatment?

Material from your own body is at the heart of regenerative joint treatment — PRP, a platelet-rich plasma derived from blood, and SVF, the stromal vascular fraction derived from a small sample of adipose tissue. Placed into the affected joint by injection, it reduces pain and inflammation and supports the joint's tissues.

The option is aimed at patients with joint pain who wish to avoid or postpone surgery, or who have only been offered a replacement. The chance of a lasting effect is best at an early stage, which the doctor checks on your scans.

Joints we treat

We treat large and small joints — which joint, which method and how many injections is decided by the doctor after a scan review

Methods we use

Cell therapy (SVF) from your own adipose tissue

Cell therapy (SVF) from your own adipose tissue

A small sample of adipose tissue is taken and processed to obtain the stromal vascular fraction (SVF), a mix of cells that take part in tissue repair. Mixed with your own plasma, it is then injected into the affected joint.

It is usually the choice when changes in the joint are more marked and the aim is a longer-lasting effect.

PRP — platelet-rich plasma from your own blood

PRP — platelet-rich plasma from your own blood

Platelet- and growth-factor-rich plasma is obtained from a little of your blood and injected into the joint, where it helps calm inflammation and improves the conditions for tissue repair.

It may be given alone as a course of injections or combined with SVF.

How the procedure goes: step by step

Consultation and scan review

The doctor examines your joint, looks at your X-rays, MRI or ultrasound and decides whether the procedure is right for you. Scans you already have can be sent ahead of the visit.

Blood sample for PRP

We take a small blood sample from a vein. From it, platelet-rich plasma containing growth factors is prepared later on.

The doctor tells you in advance which tests are needed.

Adipose tissue sample

Under local anaesthetic the doctor takes roughly 30 ml of adipose tissue through a small puncture in the abdomen or inner thigh; stitches are not needed.

Processing in a centrifuge

After centrifuging, the sample forms separate layers; the stromal vascular fraction is taken from them and combined with the platelet-rich plasma.
The whole procedure is done in one day.

Injection into the joint

The material, once prepared, is injected directly into the affected joint; ultrasound guidance helps place it precisely.

Follow-up

The procedure needs no crutches or hospital stay. Afterwards the doctor remains in touch and follows the joint's response.

Follow-up visits

After 1 month
3 months
6 months

Follow-up visits allow the doctor to track the joint's response and fine-tune the plan. Pain tends to ease during the first month, movement improves over about three months, and the full effect builds over around six months.

After the procedure

The majority of people are discharged the same day and resume normal daily activity within a day or two; the puncture sites are simply covered with small dressings. Expect the joint to ache somewhat more in the first week — that reaction is normal. Pain usually eases in the first month, mobility and activity improve over roughly three months, and the full effect develops over around six months. The duration varies from person to person and depends on the stage of the condition, body weight, activity and other factors; no one can promise a fixed result. Individual advice on exercise and load for the first weeks comes from your doctor.

Joint treatment: frequently asked questions

About non-surgical joint treatment for patients from Taiz

If you have been told that joint replacement is the only choice, a second opinion is worth getting. In Taiz, you can send your scans and reports for a free independent assessment before making any decision about surgery.

The puncture sites are small and covered with dressings, and no general anaesthetic is used. This is why joint treatment in Taiz does not require crutches or a long rehabilitation period.

The price depends on how many joints are treated and which method is chosen. For patients from Taiz, the doctor explains the plan and the cost at the consultation, which is free.
