Some cases call for other answers

If nothing needs to be operated on, that verdict comes during the consultation, and you part with nothing. Described below are the situations where a transplant genuinely helps.

A man with thinning hair at a consultation: a case where a hair transplant helps

Problems it can solve

  • Androgenetic or diffuse alopecia
  • A receding hairline
  • A high hairline
  • Insufficient hair density
  • Genetic traits of hair growth
  • Effects left by an injury or burn
  • Shedding post-illness
  • Shedding due to a hormonal imbalance

Reading this and still guessing?

Write to us in Telegram or WhatsApp, and the rest happens there: the coordinator asks for close-up pictures of the thinning, a doctor looks and says whether a transplant would help. Free, with nothing scheduled.

Grafts are taken from the back of the head, the donor zone, through micro-punctures of about 1 mm, with no scars left. Before the operation, the doctor discusses the shape with you, taking your facial features into account. Transplanted hair grows for life, and the beard can be trimmed and styled as usual.

What gets asked

We share what people
ask before booking

City Medical Centre doctors

Of course. City Medical Centre works with people from many cities and many countries; an online appointment is offered before anything is agreed.

FUE: $2,200 (≈ MZN 145,000). DHI: $2,500 (≈ MZN 160,000). Combined: $2,700 (≈ MZN 175,000). A free consultation and graft count gives you the final, contract-fixed price with no hidden extras.

In one day it is over, and you go back to your own bed.

Patients feel nothing: the scalp is numbed with an anesthetic given locally.

FUE is cut-free graft extraction by tweezer. DHI is direct implantation with a Choi pen, skipping channel-making. The combined technique takes grafts by FUE and places them using the DHI method.

The doctor decides it on the basis of the donor area, and the consultation where this happens is free.

Healing lasts 0–10 days. When transplanted hairs shed at 2–4 weeks, nothing is wrong. Regrowth starts by 3–4 months, real density arrives at 6–9 months; 12–18 months gives the final outcome.

Hair growth is covered by a lifetime guarantee, fixed in the signed contract.

The procedure in plain words for Maputo

FUE and DHI are built around convenience, which is what a patient in Maputo usually needs: no cuts, no stitches, local anaesthesia on its own, and an operation that finishes the day it starts.

Nothing is signed and nothing is paid at the start in Maputo. The online consultation is free: the doctor sees pictures of the affected zone and tells you if a transplant helps. The clinic is in touch 24/7.

Give the scalp 0-10 days to heal. The loss of transplanted hairs at 2-4 weeks is written into the process and should not be read as a setback. Growth kicks off at 3-4 months and carries on by itself.

Hair Transplant in Maputo: price and what is included

Prices are in US dollars; the amount in brackets is an approximate conversion to MZN at the rate of 02.10.2026. The final price is fixed in your contract.

Patient reviews

What patients write after this operation. Reviews are translated from the original language.

Andrey M.

I had the operation a month ago. Before and after surgery they were always in touch and helped with questions about my tests. The operation itself went wonderfully, the staff are polite and masters of their craft, you feel you are in safe hands. I am recovering now, and they answer all my questions. I am happy and I recommend them!

DHI hair transplant

Pavel Sinitsyn

The best clinic of all the ones I was choosing from. No regrets at all! The result is simply amazing, I am thrilled. I recommend it to everyone: these people do great work and make people happy. Once again, a huge thank you to everyone. Roman, the head of the clinic, is the best: he was personally in touch with me and looked after my recovery. Thank you for making my dream come true.

FUE hair transplant

Maria Akopyan

I thought about an eyebrow transplant for a long time and finally went for it. At first I was afraid the result would look unnatural, but when I saw my new eyebrows I was delighted! They came out full and in harmony with my face. I can hardly believe that now I just wash my face and go, I have never felt so free. For anyone tired of constant make-up, a transplant is a real lifesaver!

Eyebrow transplant (FUE)

Alexander M.

I really wanted a thick beard, but I had problems with it. I tried every home remedy and minoxidil, and nothing helped. After a long search for the best clinic I settled on this one. Thank you so much for the service, I liked everything and now I am happy! I had the beard transplant 10 months ago and I am very pleased with the result. By the way, the music in the clinic was great, as far as I remember. A friend of mine has already come to you for a transplant on my advice and was also happy with the result. I wish you every success!

Beard transplant (FUE)

Vladimir Z.

I went to the clinic to see a trichologist and had a hair transplant. I really liked the doctor's approach, and all the recommendations helped. I want to point out that nobody tries to sell you extra services: they tell you things as they are, and if some treatment is not needed, they do not push it. Cosy and clean.

DHI hair transplant

Artem Popov

This may sound obvious, but a head of hair really changes everything in your life. You feel much more confident and go through life like a winner. And it is all thanks to the doctor at this clinic and to the staff who take care of their patients. Many thanks to the clinic for a happy life with new hair, for the comfortable conditions and for the professionalism during the hair transplant.

Maputo and the question of a hair transplant

Maputo is the capital and largest city of Mozambique, a port city on a large natural bay of the Indian Ocean, with an economy centred on commerce. The city has a population of 1,088,449 (as of 2017), and the metropolitan area, which includes neighbouring Matola, has a total population of 2,717,437. It is a place where people meet clients all day, go to markets, university lectures, church services and family gatherings, so appearance matters, and hair loss is a subject many people think about quietly for years.

Men from Maputo most often ask about two things: the receding frontal hair line and thinning at the crown. A growing number also ask about beard transplantation, because a patchy beard is as visible as a thin top. Both are done with the FUE or DHI technique, where grafts are taken from the back of the head, the donor area, and moved through micro-punctures of about 1 mm, so nothing scars over.

This text explains how the procedure fits into the real rhythm of life in Maputo: the climate, the working week, sport, social events and the way you consult remotely from home. Medical decisions are always made with the surgeon, but good planning starts with understanding your own daily routine.

Climate of Maputo and what it means for healing

Maputo has a tropical savanna climate. The city is relatively dry, averaging 829.6 mm of precipitation per year, with abundant rain in summer and little in winter. The mean annual temperature is 22.8 °C. January is the hottest month, with a mean of 26.8 °C, and July is the coolest, with a mean of 18.8 °C.

For a hair transplant this means the cooler, drier months from the middle of the year are generally more comfortable for the first days. You will be wearing a loose cap or staying indoors, and heat makes a covered head sweat and itch. In the hot summer months the scalp is more sensitive to sun and sweat, so planning is more demanding, though the operation is still possible with careful protection.

Whatever the season, direct sun on the treated area in the early weeks should be avoided. Use shade, a soft loose hat approved by your surgeon, and do not scratch the scalp. Dust from busy roads and building work is another reason to keep the head clean and protected, following the washing routine the clinic gives you.

Sea, pool and sport in Maputo

Life in Maputo is tied to the bay: the coast, the sea breeze, weekends by the water and the island of Inhaca at the east end of the bay. After surgery, the sea and swimming pools are exactly the places to wait on. Salt water, chlorine and sun on fresh micro-punctures are not a good mix, so ask the surgeon on which day you may return to the water and follow that answer rather than a friend's experience.

The city has serious sports infrastructure left from the 2011 All-Africa Games, including the Zimpeto stadium and the Zimpeto Olympic Pool, and football is part of everyday conversation. If you play football on weekends or train in a gym, tell the coordinator in the first consultation. Contact sport and heavy sweating are paused for a period set by the doctor, and heading a ball or a cap strap pressing on the grafts is something to discuss in advance.

Plan the return to training in stages: walking first, then light exercise, then full intensity, always with the surgeon's agreement. A few quiet weeks do not change your result, while a knock or heavy sweating at the wrong moment can.

Work, study and the right time in Maputo

Maputo is a city of offices, ports, trade, government institutions and universities. The largest, Universidade Eduardo Mondlane, has nearly 8,000 students in its faculties in the city, and private institutes have grown quickly since the 1990s. A student can plan the procedure in a break between exams, while an office worker can choose a quiet period at work.

The first 0–10 days are for healing, so this is the time to be away from public view if you wish. Many people in Maputo prefer to schedule the operation before a long weekend or leave, so that the scabs and redness are gone before they meet clients or colleagues. Remote work is possible in many jobs, which also helps.

Then comes shedding: after 2-4 weeks the transplanted hairs let go, as expected. This is normal and not a failure. Knowing it in advance matters, because it falls exactly when you may be at work again and wondering what is happening.

Family events, food and daily habits

Maputo is a cosmopolitan city, with Xitsonga, Portuguese and, to a lesser extent, Arabic, Indian and Chinese languages and cultures present. The result is a rich food culture and a calendar full of weddings, religious holidays and family meals. These events are an important part of planning: nobody wants to attend a wedding with a freshly operated scalp.

Count back from the date of the event. The 0–10 day healing phase should be finished well before it, and shedding at 2-4 weeks should not coincide with an important photograph. Hair comes back at 3-4 months, is visibly thicker at 6-9 months, and the settled look comes at 12-18 months. If the date is fixed, tell the coordinator, who will help build the plan around it.

In daily life, avoid crowded places in the first days, keep hands away from the grafts, and sleep with the head slightly raised if your doctor recommends it. A calm week at home, with family cooking and caring for you, is often the easiest start to recovery.

Who is a good candidate and who should wait

In general terms, a good candidate has enough healthy hair in the donor area at the back of the head and realistic expectations. The shape of the line is discussed with you before the operation, taking your facial features into account. The same applies to a beard: the doctor looks at the density of the donor area and the shape you want.

Some situations call for caution or a delay: active skin disease of the scalp, unstable chronic illness, unclear causes of hair loss, or hair loss that is still progressing quickly. Tell the surgeon about every medicine you take and any illness, including blood pressure and diabetes. Weight and general health also matter for surgery; the WHO publishes general information on overweight and its effect on health.

The remote consultation is the place to ask honestly. A good doctor will say when a transplant is not the right step, or when treatment should come first.

Questions to ask the surgeon

Prepare a short list before the online call. Ask who performs the key stages, how the line will be drawn and why this shape suits your face, how many sessions you may need, and how the donor area will look afterwards. Ask what you should do in Maputo's heat and sun and when you may swim in the sea.

Ask about the stages of the result: 0–10 days for healing, 2–4 weeks for normal shedding, 3–4 months for new growth to start, 6–9 months for real density and 12–18 months for the final result. One patient described it this way: from about the 4th month active, even growth began, the transplanted hair took very well, and the beard looks natural with no bald patches left. Treat such stories as an example of the timeline, not a promise for every person.

Also ask what follow-up looks like. Here the answer is clear: we stay with you from pre-op planning to 12 months later, with check-ups at months 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12.

Commerce, markets and the daily look in Maputo

Maputo is a port city with an economy centred on commerce, and that shapes how people think about their appearance. A trader at the central market, a clerk near City Hall or a guide around the Fortress meets dozens of people before noon. A thinning frontal hair line or a patchy beard is noticed in this kind of daily contact, and many men tell the coordinator that confidence at work is the real reason they ask about a transplant.

For people whose day is spent standing, talking and moving around the city, recovery planning should be practical. Choose a week when long hours outdoors are not required, and arrange for someone to cover the busiest tasks. The first days are the most delicate, and a short, well-organised pause is far easier than trying to work through them.

The city is also known for its mix of Bantu, Portuguese, Arab, Indian and Chinese influences. That variety means many different hair types and beard patterns, so ask the surgeon how the donor area at the back of the head suits your own hair type and what density can realistically be achieved.

Compression, caps and the bay breeze

Maputo sits on the west side of a large bay, and the wind from the water can be pleasant, but it also carries dust and salt through the streets. In the early days after surgery, keep the head covered only as your surgeon allows and avoid exposing the treated area to blowing dust. Clean hands and a calm routine matter more than any product.

If the clinic gives you a compression garment or a special sleeping position, follow it exactly. Swelling can appear on the forehead in the first days and usually settles on its own, and a cooler room helps you sleep. In the warm months a fan or a shaded room is more comfortable than a hot car or a crowded minibus.

Avoid tight caps and helmets until the doctor says otherwise. If you ride a motorbike or use shared transport, plan a different way of getting around for the first days, so that nothing presses on the grafts.

Planning the full year from Maputo

A hair transplant is not a single day but a year of waiting and checking. The result settles 12–18 months after surgery, and the team stays with you from pre-op planning to 12 months later. Mark the check-ups at months 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 in your calendar, together with school terms, work deadlines and family events.

Photograph your head from the same angles in the same light each month. These pictures help you and the doctor judge progress honestly during the long middle period, when the hair is growing but not yet dense. Many patients feel impatient around month 4 and again around month 8, and the photographs give them calm evidence.

Between check-ups, keep in touch through Telegram or WhatsApp. Questions about washing, sun, sport or a new medicine are best asked early, and the coordinator is available around the clock.

How the remote consultation works from Maputo

You do not need to go anywhere for the first step. The consultation is free and online, and coordinators are available around the clock (24/7) on Telegram and WhatsApp. You send photos of the head from several sides, describe your medical history and the date you have in mind, and the team prepares an assessment with the doctor.

Because Portuguese is the native language of almost half of Maputo, many people prefer to write in their own language, and you can ask for explanations until everything is clear. Write down your questions in your own words; no question is too small.

After surgery, a coordinator will be on the phone 24/7. If you see something that worries you, such as swelling, itching or redness, you can send a photo and get an answer without waiting. This contact continues through the check-ups at months 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12.

Can I have a consultation from Maputo without leaving home?

Yes. The consultation is free and online. Coordinators are available 24/7 on Telegram and WhatsApp, and you send photos and your questions from home.

How is the hair taken and placed?

Grafts are taken from the back of the head, the donor area, and moved through micro-punctures of about 1 mm, so nothing scars over.

Is the hot season in Maputo a problem?

January is the hottest month, with a mean of 26.8 °C. Heat and sun make the first weeks harder, so protect the scalp from sun and sweat. Many people prefer the cooler months, with July the coolest at 18.8 °C, but the surgeon will advise on your date.

When can I go back to work?

The first 0–10 days are for healing. Many people plan this period around leave or remote work. Ask the surgeon for the exact day for your job.

When can I swim in the sea or the pool?

Not early on. Ask the surgeon for the specific day and follow it, because salt water, chlorine and sun are not good for fresh micro-punctures.

Will the transplanted hair fall out?

Yes, 2-4 weeks after surgery the transplanted hairs let go, as expected. New growth starts at 3-4 months.

When will I see the result?

Hair comes back at 3-4 months, is visibly thicker at 6-9 months, and the settled look comes at 12-18 months.

Can a beard be transplanted too?

Yes. The doctor discusses the shape with you before the operation, taking your facial features into account. Transplanted hair grows for life: trim and style the beard as usual.

What support is there after surgery?

We stay with you from pre-op planning to 12 months later. Check-ups are at months 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12, and a coordinator will be on the phone 24/7.

Does the dust and sea wind in Maputo affect healing?

They can irritate the scalp in the early days. Keep the area clean, protect it as the surgeon advises and avoid touching it with unwashed hands.

Can I use public transport after the operation?

Ask the surgeon first. In the first days avoid crowded places and anything that presses or knocks the grafts, and plan a calmer way to get around.

How do I follow my progress during the year?

Take photographs from the same angles each month and compare them at the check-ups at months 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12. The settled look comes at 12–18 months.
