With every recommendation followed, complications seldom occur, though they can include hematoma or seroma, wound infection, reduced or increased nipple sensitivity, capsular contracture, aesthetic asymmetry, wound separation and tissue necrosis.

You can expect a long-lasting mammoplasty result: about 10–15 years after augmentation (until the implants are replaced) and 5–10 years after a lift or reduction. How long it lasts is affected by weight, pregnancy, skin aging and gravity. Wear supportive underwear and control your weight to keep it.

Breastfeeding after mammoplasty depends on the procedure. Augmentation through an under-breast or armpit incision with a submuscular implant usually keeps lactation intact, since glandular tissue is not damaged. The surgery is carried out under general anesthesia, and the patient feels nothing. Moderate discomfort is possible during the first 1–3 days and is relieved by pain medication. You can get back to work (no physical exertion) in 7–14 days. Light walks in 1–2 weeks. Fitness and swimming in 4–6 weeks, strength training in 3 months. Pool and sea in 4–6 weeks. Keep wearing compression garments for 4–6 weeks. The precise timing depends on your own recovery.

Scientific evidence does not show that mammoplasty increases breast cancer risk. Implants do not lead to cancer. After surgery, stay on top of regular screening through self-exams, mammography and ultrasound. Always let the examining doctor know you have implants.

After a C-section, mammoplasty can be done once the body has fully healed. At least 6–12 months should pass after delivery and after breastfeeding ends. A consultation and examination by a surgeon are required before the operation.

Mammoplasty does leave scars, but with a skilled surgeon they are minimal. Incisions are made in hidden areas — under the breast, around the areola or in the armpit. In the first months scars are reddish, but within 6–12 months they fade and become almost invisible.

In the first weeks after surgery, slight asymmetry is normal: swelling and uneven healing are behind it. If shape or size still differ after 3–6 months, see your surgeon for a check-up to find the reason.

Following mammoplasty, the nipples and breasts may temporarily become less or more sensitive. Irritated nerve endings are the cause. In most cases normal sensitivity returns within 3–12 months. With no improvement after a year, visit your surgeon.

Hormonal drugs (contraceptives, hormone replacement therapy) have no direct effect on implants, but they can cause swelling or changes in breast tissue volume that temporarily alter appearance. Always tell your surgeon about such medications before surgery.
