What is arthritis
and when does this treatment fit?

Arthritis is the name for joint inflammation. Pain that comes at rest and at night, morning stiffness that persists beyond half an hour, swelling, redness and warmth over the joint are the classic signs. Causes vary, from autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid or psoriatic arthritis to gout, infection or an old injury.

PRP and SVF are there to help calm inflammation and pain and to support the joint's tissues; they do not stand in for a rheumatologist treating a systemic disease. The doctor first confirms what kind of arthritis it is and chooses the right time — never during an active joint infection or a severe flare.

Joints we treat

Large and small joints — the doctor chooses the joint, the method and the number of injections after reviewing your scans

Methods we use

Cell therapy (SVF) from your own adipose tissue

Cell therapy (SVF) from your own adipose tissue

To obtain the stromal vascular fraction (SVF), a mix of cells that support tissue repair, a small sample of your adipose tissue is processed. The SVF is combined with your own plasma and injected into the affected joint.

Its effect on local inflammation and tissue repair is why it is used in inflammatory arthritis, after the acute flare has settled.

PRP — platelet-rich plasma from your own blood

PRP — platelet-rich plasma from your own blood

Separated from a small volume of your blood, plasma rich in platelets and growth factors is injected into the joint to help calm inflammation and create better conditions for tissue repair.

Rheumatoid and other inflammatory arthritis may call for it as one part of the overall treatment plan.

How the procedure goes: step by step

Consultation and scan review

Your X-rays, MRI or ultrasound are reviewed and the joint is examined, after which the doctor decides whether this procedure suits you. Already have scans? You can send them in advance.

Blood sample for PRP

Blood is taken from a vein in a small amount, later to be turned into platelet-rich plasma with growth factors.

The doctor tells you in advance which tests are needed.

Adipose tissue sample

A small portion of adipose tissue (about 30 ml) is collected under local anaesthetic through a puncture on the abdomen or inner thigh, with no stitches needed.

Processing in a centrifuge

The stromal vascular fraction is isolated after the sample is spun in a centrifuge and separates into layers, then mixed with the platelet-rich plasma.
The whole procedure is done in one day.

Injection into the joint

Guided by ultrasound for accurate placement, the doctor injects the prepared material directly into the affected joint.

Follow-up

Without crutches and without a hospital stay: after the procedure the doctor stays in touch and follows the joint's response.

Follow-up visits

After 1 month
3 months
6 months

Follow-up visits allow the doctor to track the joint's response and fine-tune the plan: pain generally eases over the first month, mobility improves in about three months, and the full effect develops over roughly six months.

After the procedure

Going home the same day is the norm, and within a day or two most people are back to daily life; the punctures are covered with small dressings. For the first week the joint may ache a little more — this is expected. Pain usually eases over the first month; mobility and activity improve over about three months; the full effect develops over around six months. The effect lasts differently for each person, depending on the stage of the condition, body weight, activity and other factors, and no one can promise a fixed result. If you are under a rheumatologist, talk to them before stopping prescribed medication.

Joint treatment: frequently asked questions

Choosing arthritis treatment in Durban

Arthritis treatment in Durban uses your own tissue: platelet-rich plasma from a small blood sample and the stromal vascular fraction from a small adipose tissue sample. There is no donor or synthetic material.

If you are being treated by a rheumatologist, do not stop your prescribed medication without talking to them. In Durban, regenerative injections are planned together with your ongoing treatment.

Send your X-rays, MRI, ultrasound or blood test results. Patients from Durban receive a free assessment and a clear answer on suitable treatment and its price.
