Settat, a Plateau Town with a University

Settat lies in central Morocco on a plateau ringed by low hills, at roughly 370 metres above sea level. It is about 84 kilometres by road from Casablanca and around 146 kilometres from Marrakesh, and it is the capital of Settat Province in the Casablanca-Settat region. The 2024 national census, published by the High Commission for Planning, counted 171,556 residents in the city, while the province as a whole has about 651,000 on the same count.

The town grew around a kasbah built by Sultan Moulay Ismail and became an administrative centre in the early eighteenth century, thanks to its position where roads from north and south meet. Through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries it was known for trading farm produce from fertile soil. A motorway reached Casablanca in 2001 and Marrakesh in 2007.

Since the early 1990s Settat has also been a university town, home to Hassan I University. That gives it a particular mix of people: students in their twenties, employees who commute towards Casablanca, traders and farmers.
